RADIO LOG Filed March 31, 1930 I 5 I I a I r I I I i 5 I 2 0552 022 Z/CYzaZz/s INVENTOR "l5 ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 14, 1931 PATENT OFFICE JOSEPH W. CHALEK, 013 CHICAGO, ILLINOIS RADIO LOG Application filed March 31, 1930. Serial No. 440,593.
This invention relates to certain novel im provements in radio logs, and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which is economical in manufacture and highly efficient in use.
Among the several objects of this invention is the provision of a radio log wherein there is embodied a simple and expeditious 19 arrangement of parts for moving a ribbonlike strip across a window to display the call letters, location, wave length and power of radio broadcasting stations.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings 20 showing the preferred form of construction,
and in which: I
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional detail view of the same taken substantially on the line 22 25 of Fig. 4;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional detail view of certain operating mechanisms embodied in the invention;
Fig. 4 is a sectional detail View taken sub- 30 stantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is a sectional detail view taken substantially on the line 55 of Fig. 2.
i In the drawings a casing is indicated at 10. This casing includes a top wall 11 having a window 12 formed therein. The outer end portions 13 of the wall taper downwardly to a point below the window 12 and are formed as part of the side walls 14 to which a removable bottom wall 15 is secured.
Arranged within the casing 10 are spaced partitions 16 and 17. The partition 16 carries spaced pins 18 provided with heads 19. Mounted for rotation on the pins 18 are driven rollers 20 and 21, being provided with recesses 22 wherein the heads 19 are confined. These heads 19 will prevent displacement of the rollers from the pins 18.
Formed in the partition 16 is an opening 23 within which is arranged a flange bear- 50 ing sleeve 24. Opposite the flange 25 of this sleeve 24 there is secured in any suitable manner a flange 26 whereby to complete-connection between the sleeve 24 and the partition 16. Formed in the wall adjacent the partition 16 is an opening 27 disposed in alignment with the sleeve 24. j
Projected through this opening 27 is a shaft 28 carrying a thumb knob 29 by means of which the shaft 28 is rotated. On the shaft 28 adjacent the knob 29 is loosely mounted a collar 30. The inner end portion of the shaft is enlarged and provided with screw-threads 31. This end of the shaft also provides a head 32.
The enlarged portion of the shaft is G threaded into an operating wheel 33.
As shown, the roller 20 has its side wall tapered toward the partition 16, and the roller 21 has its side wall taperedin an opposite direction for reasons hereinafter set forth. I
The partition 17 has connected thereto as at 34 a leaf spring 35 providing opposite arms 36 having openings 37 formed therein which openings are disposed in alignment with the V-shaped recesses 38 formed on the heads 19.
The ribbon 39 which has printed thereon call letters, 40, of radio broadcasting stations and other matter relating to the stations has its ends secured to reels 41 by projecting the ends through slots 42 formed therein. The ribbon is directed over a guiding roller 43 carried by the partitions and arranged directly beneath the window 12. These reels 41 include end flanges 44 carried by the shafts 45. The ends of these shafts project beyond the flanges 44 and are tapered for projection into the recess 38 and openings 37.
The reels are operated in the following manner so as to cause the ribbon to wind on one reel and unwind from the other.
As shown in Fig. 2, the driving wheel has its side in contact with the side of the roller 21. By rotating the shaft in a proper direction the reel supported by this roller will rotate and wind the ribbon thereon from the other reel. To reverse movement of the shaft, the shaft is moved inwardly to dispose the wheel 33 in contact with the roller 20 whereupon the reel supported by this roller will be ropreferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be. limited to the precise details'of'construction set forth, but
desire toavail-myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: i
'1. A device including a casing having a window formed therein, a pairof reel members, airibbon having end portions connected to the reel members for winding and unwinding alternately from said reel mem bers, means for directing said ribbon across said window, means for alternately rotating said reel members including an operating shaft, a pair of independently rotatable driven members having tapered side walls with the tapered side wall of one of said driven members extended in a direction opposite to the directionof the side wall of the other driven member, and a drive member on the shaft adapted for alternative engagement with the drivenfmembers.
2. A device including a casing having a window formed therein, a pair of reel mem-' here, a ribbon having end portions connected to the reel members for winding and unwindin alternatel from said reel members means for directing said ribbon across said window, means for alternately rotatingsaid reel members including an opera'ting shaft 7 slida-bly supported by said casing, a pair of in-' dependently rotatable drivenmembers having 7 tapered side walls with the tapered side wall of oneof said drivenmembers extended. in a direction opposite to the direction of'the side wall of the other driven member, and a drive member on the shaft adapted foralternative engagement with the driven members.
3. Aradio station log comprising a housing having a window therein, partition membersin said housing spaced from oppositely disposed walls thereof, truncated cones rotatpartitions, a shaft rotatably and slidably tended position the other of said cones will be engaged and said ribbon wound in opposite dlrection.
In testimony whereof I 'afliX my signature.
