Description

April 14, 1931. $M|TH I 1,801,026
TENT POLE MOUNTING Filed Oct. 5. i929 Patented Apr. 14, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ISIDORE P. SMITH, F TOLEDO, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE HE'ITRICK MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO r TENT-POLE MOUNTING Application filed October 3, 1929. Serial No. 396,972.
This invention relates to tents, but more particularly to tent pole mountings, and an object is to provide a simple and eiiieient mounting for tent poles, which is so constructed and arranged that the poles are retained at all times in the desired position, and further permits them to be readily assembled for use, or disassembled, and secured in a position convenient for handling.
Further objects and advantages will hereinafter appear, and the invention is shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is an elevation of a tent;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the tent pole mounting;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the mounting plate and tent poles in assembled relation; and
Fig. 4.- is a side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 3.
The illustrated embodiment of the invention comprises a tent 1 of canvas, or other suitable material, having two pairs of tent 25 poles 2 and 3 projecting through the top of the tent. The tent poles are held in assembled relation by a plate l, over which the top of the tent is gathered and held in position by,
a draw string 5, the plate serving to hold the 3 tent in the desired position.
The plate 4, which may be of metal and in the form of a thin disc, is provided with two pairs of recesses 5 and 6, each recess being spaced or separated from the adjacent recess by an abutment member 7. Each recess is in diametrically opposed relation to the other recess of its pair, and are equally spaced from adjacent recesses. The recesses 5 receive the tent polesQ, whereas the recess 6 receives the tent poles 3. It will be observed that the poles of each pair are disposed in parallel planes. Each pole is provided with a transverse aperture 8, which is aligned with the aperture in the other pole of the pair so that the apertures of the poles 2 are in alignment, and the apertures in the poles 3 are in alignment.
The poles 2 and 3 are retained in assembled relationship with the plate 4 by two wires 9, one wire extending through the aligned apertures in the poles 2, and the other wire extending through the aligned aperture in the poles 3. Struck out from the plate 4 are loopmembers 10, one loop member being positioned adjacent each of the recesses. As shown, one pair of loop members 10 are struck out of one side of the plate 4, whereas, the other pair of loop members are struck out of the other side of the plate 4. As shown, the ends of the wires 9 are bent over the edge of the plate 4 to prevent endwise movement thereof, and securely to anchor the same in position.
The above described mounting enables the tent poles to pivot around the wires 9, and the arrangement is such that the poles may be readily assembled to position of use, and retained in such position, thereby eliminating the trouble and annoyance of erecting the tent and holding the same in position of use. In disassembling the tent the poles pivot around the wires 9, and are thereby retained in the desired relationship. When in this position the poles are conveniently arranged for shipment. So soon as the poles are unpacked, it is apparent that the tent may be readily and conveniently erected with a minimum of time and trouble.
It is to be understood that numerous changes in details of construction, arrangement and choice of materials may be effected without departing from the spirit of the invention, especially as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A tent pole mounting comprising a plate having an opening throughwhich tent poles are adapted to extend, diametrically opposed guides on said plate, and a wire extending across said opening and engaging said guides thereby providing pivots for the tent poles.
2. The combination with a plate having an opening, a pair of tent poles extending through said opening in parallel planes, a wire projecting through said poles, and means to hold said wire to said plate on opposite sides thereof.
3. The combination with a plate having an opening, a pair of tent poles extending through said opening, said poles having aligned openings, means to retain said poles in parallel planes, and a member extending through the openingsin said poles and anchored to said plate.
4. Adevice of the class described comprising a platehaving an opening therein through which tent poles are adapted to extend, abutm ments on said plate to retain the poles in predetermined planes, and a wire extending across said opening providing pivots for the tent poles. i
5. The'coinbination with a plate provided with an opening, and four tent poles extending through said-opening, said poles being arranged in pairs andthe poles of each pair lying in parallel planes, each pair of poles having aligned apertures, and rod-like members anchored to said plate and extending through said apertures providing pivotal mountings for said poles. V
6. Tent poles and a mounting therefor, comprising a plate having an opening to receive four tent poles, means on said plate to retain said poles in predetermined relationship, said poles being arranged in pairs and each pair having aligning apertures, and means anchored to said plate extending through said apertures to provide pivots for said poles.
7 A tent pole mounting comprisinga plate having recesses 'toreceivean even number of tent poles, said recesses being constructed to hold said poles in parallel planes, said poles being arranged in pairsand each pair having aligning apertures, and Wires extending through such aligned apertures to provide pivotsfor said poles; 4 8. The combination of a tent, a plurality of crossed poles for holding the'tentin up- 7 right position, a plate forming a mounting for said poles approximately Where the lat} ter cross, and means for fasteningthe tent 5 directly above said plate so that the latter provides a support for the tent.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name to this specification;
