Patented Apr. 7, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CLARENCE MAHONEY, WILLIAM J. CONWELL, AND GEORGE I4. SELLERS, ELWOOD, INDIANA, ASSIGNORS TO G. I. SELLERS AND SONS COMPANY, OF ELWOOD, INDIANA,
A CORPORATION DETACIIABLE LEG Application filed May 14, 1930. serial n6. 452,390.
able the same to be manufactured in box type, that is without legs, so that the same may be shipped without legs, in order that the same may be shipped at lower class freight or express rates, may be packed at lower cost in view of the smaller amount of packing material required, may utilize less storage space both in warehouses and in shipment and which will require less labor incidental to the packing and shipping of the cabinets, other articles of furniture or the like. i
The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawings illustrating an operative embodiment and wherein Figure 1 is a view in perspective showing the improved leg applied to a kitchen cabinet or other article of furniture,
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the leg,
Figure 3 is a plan view thereof,
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the leg,
Figure 5 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 4,
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 66 of Figure 4:, and
Figure 7 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 77 of Figure 4.
Referring specifically tothe drawings, the leg has a body at 10 preferably of metal which may be either cast or sheet metal stamped into proper form as preferred. The leg is shown in the present instance as a stamped from sheet metal of suitable gauge.
Said leg comprises solid vertical walls 11 at a right angle to each other from which retaining fingers 12 extend at a right angle, preferably meeting each other diagonally of the leg. The fingers 12 retain a core 13, of wood or any other suitable material which reinforces the leg generally and affords a socket 14 whereby a conventional caster 15 may be secured to the leg. In lieu of the core 13, any suitable means may be provided in order to enable attachment of the caster 15. a
In order to provide an extended engaging surface, each wall 11 has a triangular extension 15 at the top thereof and such walls and extension have inwardly extending flanges 16 all disposed in ,ancommon plane and adapted for engagement with the lower surface of a kitchen cabinet 17 or any other article of furniture or the like. In addition, attaching lugs 18 extend vertically from the extension 15 and have openings 19 therein to accommodate bolts, screws or other fas tenings 20 adapted to secure the leg to the cabinet 17.
Particular attention is called to the fact that the extensions 15 are reinforced by inwardly extending diagonal flanges 21 along their lower edges and that such flanges perform the further function of holding the core 13 in place, engaging the same above the fingers 12 as at the inner ends of such flanges 21 at 22.
It will be realized that the leg construction is exceedingly strong, durable and capable of manufacture at minimum cost and renders it practical to ship the kitchen cabinets or other articles of furniture or the like 17 without legs and to install the legs at the destination or place of use of the cabinet, thus attaining the objects hereinbefore mentioned.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
We claim as our invention 1. A. leg having an extension thereon, a core for the leg, and a flange on the extension serving to reinforce the same and to aid in retaining the core on the leg.
2. A leg having a body provided with walls extending in different directions, extensions on said walls, flanges on said extensions, and a core for said leg engaged by said flanges to aid in holding the core in place.
3. A leg having a body provided with walls extending in diiferent' directions, extensions on sald walls, flanges on said extensions, a core for said leg engaged by said flanges to aid in holding the core in place,
fingers extending from said walls and engaging e 9m elawsai flanges I 4. A. leghaving a bodyp rovided with walls extending indifferent directi ns extensions on said walls, flanges on said extensions, a core ion said legengaged said flanges to aid-in-holding-the cone in place,
, inwardly extending flanges on said walls to serve as a supporting surface for the article to be attached, and upwardly extending at: taching lugs on said walls.
