JOHN E. WAKEFIELD, OF VVORGESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO EDWARD VAILL, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING ROCKING-CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,980, dated July 18, 1876; application filed February 24, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. WAKEFIELD, of Worcester, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Folding Rocking-Chairs, of which the following is a ers, so attached that when the chair seat and.
frame fold up against the front of the back and back legs the rockers fold up behind such back legs.
Inthe drawing, Figure 1 is a section of the folding chair complete. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the chair as folded, and Fig. 3 is a front elevation. t
The back and back legs form one frame, composed of the side pieces a and cross-pieces b, which may be plain or ornamental, or the back may be caned or upholstered.
The front legs 0 are pivoted at cl to the backframe. The seatframe 0 is pivoted to the back legs, and rests, when unfolded, upon the The links or braces g are attached at their upper ends to the front legs 0, and at their lower end to the folding seat-frame c, and the seat is either a frame upholstered, resting upon the upper ends of the folding seat-frame, or it may be a flexible seat, a", as shown.
The front legs are pivoted at t to the front portions of the rockers k, and the lower ends of the back legs rest upon such rockers, and are steadied by the plates 1, and these plates might have holes in them for the insertion of pins or screws to prevent the chair folding when in use. I
The back legs a are connected to the rockers by the links m, that are pivoted at their upper ends to the legs, and at the lower ends to the rockers. Such links might be straight or curved, the pivots being positioned as shown; but I prefer to use the L-shaped links or angular braces, as they are not conspicuous, but are contiguous to the other parts.
When the chair is folded, the legs, seat, and seat-frame fold together,.as in said other application made by me for a patent, and the rockers fold up behind the back legs. The lengths of the links m are such that they conmeet such rockers and back legs as well in their unfolded as in their folded positions.
I claim as my invention' 1. The folded rocking-chair, made with the back-frame and legs connected to the rockers by the links m, the front legs a pivoted to the rockers and to the back, the seat-frame e pivoted to the back legs, and the links 9 connecting the seat-frame to the front legs, substantially as set forth.
2. The L-shaped links, in combination with the back legs and rockers of the folding chair, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 4th day of February, A.
I JOHN E. WAKEFIELD. Witnesses: O. S. GORDON,
A. B. DUNBAR. I
