My invention comprises a novel type of cutting torch provided with means for projecting a plurality of non-parallel jets of a cutting gas, and it is an especial object 'of this invention to provide simple and eil'ective means and methods for applying non-interfering jets of the character referred to in the cutting of slots having inclined walls.
lt is an object of this invention to provide means and methods for predetermining the inclination of the walls ofbeveled or relieved slots, and for producing slots either expanding inwardly or expanding outwardly or expanding both inwardly and outwardly from an intermediate plane of constriction.
@ther objects of my invention appear from the following description of an illustrative embodiment thereof, and from the appended claims, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. l is a vertical-or longitudinal section 'through the tip of a slotting torch embodying my invention and through a plate slotted thereby, this section being taken substantially at right angles to the mentioned slot and in a plane such as is indicated by the line l-l or Fig. Il.
`Figs. 2 and 3 respectively illustrate), alternative types of slot which may be formed by varying the distance between the tip of my novel torch and the work slotted thereby, or by varying the orientation of the torch or tip relatively to said work.

Referring to the details of that specific embodiment of my inventionchosen for purpose of illustration, 1 may be a plate or other metallic form in which a slot or slots are to be cut; and 2 may be the body' or barrel of a slotting torch, which may be of any usual or preferred design, the mentioned body or barrel being shown as provided with longitudinal passages 3, 4,'respectively provided for the delivery of oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas and a combustible mixture to a central distributing chamber 5 and to an auxiliary chamber 6, the end of the body or barrel 2 being chambered to receive said delivery tip, and provided with means such as the thimble or collar 7 for the retention of the same.
Coming now to the strictly novel features of my invention, l may employ in connection with the elements referred to, a delivery tip provided not only with a passage or passages '8 and 8 leading from the auxiliary chamber 6, for the delivery of a combustible mixture in a manner favorableto the heating of work to be cut, but provided also with a plurality of convergent, non-intersecting passa-ges 9, 9, leading from the distributing chamber 5 and adapted to deliver an excess of oxygen or other cutting gas within an area to be slotted in the manner described, said non-interfering jets being adapted to cooperate in thev cutting f of a slot having walls whose inclination may depend upon the angular relationship of said jets relative to a plane extendingv therebetween and longitudinally of said slot.
Although the ducts 9, 9 employed for the equal to the diameter of the respective ducts;
and it will be understood that a single tip of the general character described and shown is capable of use in cutting not only a slot of the character shown in Fig. l, in the produc- .tion of which the plane of apparent intersection or the mentioned jets may be maintained at the outer surface of the plate during the slotting of the same, but also in the production of slots having walls more sharply or less sharply inclined, or slots having an intermediate constriction, alternative forms being suggested in Figs. 2 and 3.
For example, by bringing the tip of my novel torch closer to the work, I may form a slot havin an intermediate constriction, as shown in 'g. 2; and by bringing said tip still closer to the work and at the same time so orientingthe same as to diminish the apillustrated in Fig. 3.-
parent convergence of the cutting jets, as viewed longitudinally of a slot cut thereby, I may produce a slot of the general form In connection with the foregoing, it will be understood that the practice of my invention in the cutting of slots having inclined walls implies a relative traversing movement between a torch and the work 'cut thereby, this traversing movement being effected either by advancing the work or by manipulating the torch, and the means employed for the purposes last referred to being immaterial to the practice of my invention. It" is by the use of a novel torch .tip compris ing inclined ducts for the delivery of a cutting gas, and by predetermining or varying the distance between such a tip and the work cut thereby, or by suitably orienting the mentioned tip or a torch containing the same during the cutting of a slot, that my novel and advantageous results in the cutting of slots are obtained. v
Although I have herein described one suitable complete embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that various features thereof might be independently employed,A
and also that various modications might be made therein without involving the slight est departure from the spirit and scope of my invention, as the same is indicated above and in the following claims.
I claim as my invention 1. The method of cutting slots having inclined walls which comprises producing a traversing movement between a body to' be slotted and a plurality of non-intersecting jets of a cutting gas inclined relatively to one another, and varying the relative inclination of the walls of said slots by uniformly varying the inclination of said jets relatively to a plane bisecting the angle between said walls.
2. The method of cutting slots having inclined walls which comprises producing a traversing movement between a body to be slotted and a plurality of non-intersecting jets of a cutting gas inclined relatively to one another, and uniformly varying the relative inclination of the ywalls of said slots by orienting the said jets relatively to a plane bisecting the angle between' said walls. 1
3. The method of cutting slots having inclined walls which comprises producing a traversing movement between a body to be slotted and a yplurality of non-intersecting jets of a cutting gas inclined relatively to one another, and varying the character of cut by varying both the distance of said body from a delivery tip and the orientation of said tip.
