This invention relates to a device for operating sliding windows, particularly of vehicles, in which the movement of the sash is effected by means of a pressure medium or '5 by generating pressure differences acting on vices it is known to connect two pressure arms which extend substantially in the same direction to a common link, the other end of which is attached to the sash,-so that the pivot joints of the two pressure arms move through intersecting paths for the purpose of avoiding side pressures on the sash during its displacement, whereby the sash is adapted to be secured in its closed position by the aid of a crank drive.
According to the invention, in the operating device a lever system controllable from the piston casing and including a pressure arm is provided which by means of a connecting link is connected to an operating lever attached to the sash and extending in the same direction as the pressure arm, such wise, that in the closed position of the sash the pivot joint between the pressure arm and the connecting link lies at least into its dead centre position and abuts at the same time against the operating lever.
. Thus the window sash moved by means-of mechanical force is automatically secured in its closed position and by a suitable leverage it is enabled to be moved with but little efort.
In the drawing two embodiments of the invention are shown, by way of example, in which:
Fig. 1 shows an elevation of a first constructional form of the operating device in connection with a window, with the latter open;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but with the window in its closed position;
Fig. 3 is an elevation of a second constructional form of the operating device applied to a window, with the latter in its closed position, and
Fig. 4 shows an elevation of parts of the device in their respective positions when the window is open.
The present invention is a continuation in part of my application, Serial Number 375,301, filed July 1, 1929.
Referrin to the drawing, 1 denotes a window sash shdably arranged in a frame 2 and provided with a lower guide member 3. In the slot of the latter en ages an operating lever 17 by means of a roTler 4, and the lever is mounted on a fixed pivot pin 6. The pressure arm 19 linked to a fixed pin 20 is substantially of the same direction as the oper-. ating lever 17 and connected at its other end to the latter by means of a connecting link, 18 which engages the two levers by the pins 21 and 22.
The pressure arm 19 is linked to a rod 7 of a piston 8 moving in a cylindrical casing 9 which is carried at its lower end on a pivot pin. With the ends of the piston casing 9 two flexible conduits 10, 11 are connected which are adapted to communicate with a supply pipe 13, serving for the conduction of a pres sure medium, such as air or a liquid respec tively, by the intermediary of a control dev1ce.
The latter, in this case, is constructed as a combination valve 12, the casing of which being provided with outlet openings 15 with which arecess 16 'formed in the turnable valve part is adapted to communicate.
In order to move the piston 8 upwardly the pressure medium is caused to enter the piston casing 9 by wayof the lower conduit 11. The arrangement is such that when the turnable part-of the valve 12, by means of its passage, connects the supply pipe 13 with one of the conduits 10 or 11 the second conduit (11 or 10 respectively) communicates via the recess 16 of the valve with one of the outlet openings 15 of the latter. Thus, the pressure arm 19 is enabled to be turned upwardly about the pivot 20 from its position shown in Fig. 1 by means of the piston rod 7. The pressure arm transmits its motion through the connecting link 18 to the operating lever 17, so that the window sash 1 is pushed upwardly in the frame 2. When the sash 1 has reached its closing position so as to register with the upper opening 14 of the frame 2 the connecting link 18 is moved towards the operating lever 17 until it bears on the same. Thereby, the movable pivot joint between the pressure arm 19 and the connecting link 18 lies in its dead-centre position or is moved somewhat beyond the same, as shown in Fig. 2, thus securing the sash in its closed position so as to remain 1n this position even after the pressure in the piston casing 9 were ceased.
The downward motion of the piston 8 is effected by admitting the pressure medium to the upper side thereof, whereby the automatic locking of the lever system 19, 21, 27 is released.
With motor driven vehicles, for instance, the operating devices of a plurality of window sashes may be actuated by means of one and the same control device. Thereby, the weight of the glass pane may be counterbalanced, f. i., by a spring.
The arrangement of such a spring is shown in the constructional form of the operating device illustrated in Figs. 3 and 1. Therein, the tension spring 33 is fastened on the one end on a projection of the operating lever 17 and on the other end attached to a. fixed point of the window frame, thus tending to move the operating lever upwardly and to counterbalance the weight of the window sash at least approximately by being tensioned when the said lever is turned downwardly. Besides, the operating lever by means of a pivot pin 27 is linked to a supporting arm 28 to which a dentent 29 is turnably connected. A leaf spring' 30 tends to press the detent 29 in the direction towards the pressure arm 19 and. consequently, in engagement with the toothed rack 31. The turning movement of the detent 29 in the other direction is limited by a shoulder portion onthe same which at the end of this movement bears on an abutment 32.
The operation of the last described device is as follows:
As soon as the piston is moved downwardly in the casting 9 the piston rod 7 turns the lever system 19, 18, 17 in the same direction, thus pulling the glass pane 1 down: this operating incident is illustrated in Fig. 3. \Vhen the downward movement of the pane 1 is stopped, by ceasing the application of pressure to the piston in the casing 9, after the detent 29 is moved into contact with the rack 31, the upward movement of the lever system 17, 18, 19 initiated by the spring 33 is counteracted by the detent 29 being held in the re spective tooth space of the rack 31 in which it engages. Thereby, the upward motion of the lever system 17 18, 19 is arrested so that the glass pane 1 is secured in it corresponding intermediate position or in its lowermost position respectively.
In order to raise the lass pane 1, i. e. reset the same into the c osed osition, the piston is caused to move upwar y in the easing 9. The then upwardly moving piston rod 7, at first, performs a lost motion for the length of its slot 25, but afterwards pushes the supporting arm 28upwardly by means of its upper end portion, thus disengaging the detent 29 from the rack 31. Consequently, the automatic locking of the lever system 17, 1 8, 19 is released and, subsequently, the upwardly moving piston rod 7 moves the pressure arm 19 together with it, whereby the entire lever system is turned upwardly and, therefore, the glass pane 1 is raised. In the closed position of the window pane, the pivot pin 21, the same as in the previously described example lies above the connecting line between the pivots 20, 22 i. e. beyond its dead centre position, whereby the connecting link 18 bears on the operating lever 17. Thus, the lever system 17 18, 19 and, consequently, also the glass pane 1 are again secured in their respective positions.
Alternatively, a small projection 34: may be provided on the operating lever 17 for the accommodation of a wire spring, by means of a supporting pin 36, the said wire spring to bear with its one end on the operating lever and with its other end on the pressure arm 19 in order to cause the latter to move towards the operating lever 17 whereby the transition through the dead centre position is facilitated.

In an operating device for a sliding window, particularly of vehicles, of the type described, comprising in combination, a window sash, a piston, a piston casing, the said piston being reciprocable in the said casing, a lever system controllable from the said casing of the said piston, an operating lever, a pressure arm, the said operating lever being attached to the said window sash and extending substantially in the same direction as the said pressure arm, and a pivotal connecting link for interconnecting the said operating lever and the said pressure arm, so that in the closing position of the said sash the pivot joint between the said pressure arm and the said connecting link is moved at least into its dead centre position and abuts at the'same time against the said operating lever.

In an operating device for a sliding window, particularly of vehicles, of the type described, comprising in combination, a window sash, a piston, a piston casing, the said piston being reciprocable in the said casing, a lever system controllable from the said casing of the said piston, an operating lever, a

3. In an operating device for a sliding window, particularly of vehicles, of the type described, comprising in combination, a window sash, a piston, a piston casing, the said piston being reciprocable in the said casing,
a lever system controllable from the said casing of the said piston, an operating lever, a pressure arm, the said operating lever being attached to the said window sash and extending substantially in the same direction as the said pressure arm, a detent linked to the said operating lever, a toothed rack provided on the said pressure arm opposite the said operating lever, the said detent being adapted to engage in the said toothed rack in the one 7 direction of movement of the said lever system for the purpose of automatically locking the said sash, when displaced from its closing position into another position, whilst during the movement of the said lever system in the other direction the said detent is held clear of the said rack by means of the said piston rod to permit the sash to be moved back into its closing position, and a pivotal connecting link for interconnecting the said operating lever and the said pressure arm, so thatin the closing position of the said sash the pivot joint between the said pressure arm and the said connecting link is moved at least into its dead centre position and abuts at the same time against the said operating lever.

In an operating device for a sliding window, particularly of vehicles, of the type depressure arm, a detent linked to the said operating lever, a-supporting arm adapted to be influenced by the said piston rod, the said detent being turnably connected to the supporting arm, a spring acting on the said detent, the said detent being turnable on the said supporting armagainst the action of the said spring in a limited manner, a toothed rack provided on the said pressure arm opposite thesaid operating lever, the said detent being adapted to engage in the said toothed rack in the one direction of movement of the said lever system for the purpose of automatically locking the said sash, whendisplaced from its closing position into another position, whilst during the movement of, the said lever system in the other direction the said detent is held clear of the said rack to permit the sash to be moved back intoits closing position, and a pivotal connecting link for interconnecting the said operating lever and the said pressure arm, so that in the closing position of the said sash the pivot joint bet-ween the said pressure arm and the said connecting link is moved at least into its dead centre position and abuts at the same time against the said operating lever.

In an operating device for a sliding window, particularly of vehicles, of the type described, comprising in combination, a window sash, a piston, apiston casing, the said piston being reciprocable in the said casing, a lever system controllable from the said casing of the said piston, an operating lever, a pressure arm, the said operating lever being attached to the said window sash and extending substantially in the same direction as the said pressure arm, a spring provided on the said operating lever so as to urge the said pressure arm towards the said operating lever,
and a pivotal connecting link for interconnecting the said operating lever and the said pressure arm, so that in the closing position of the said sash the pivot joint between the said pressure arm and the said connecting link is moved at least into its dead centre scribed, comprislng in combination, a window sash, a piston, a piston caslng, the said piston being reciprocable in the said casing, a lever system controllable from the said casing of the said piston, an operating lever, a pressure arm, the said operating lever being attached to the said window sash and extending substantially in the same direction as the said
