The present invention relates to supporting: hangers for roller shades and the primary ebj ect of the invention is to provide a device of this character adapted to support roller shades embodying plain rollers and not re quiring the usual spring and ratchet arrangement for rolling up the shade;

A further object of the invention is to provide an improved hanger for roller shades which may either be mountedupon the face, side of the architraves or between confronting surfaces of the window casing.

A further object resides in thenovel construction of the hangers permitting ready use of the hangers at either end of the shade roller. i

A still further object resides in the novel construction of the-holder and the manner in which the same maybe detachably associated with the mounting brackets topermit ready and easy mounting of the shade roller.

A still furtherand-important object of the invention resides in the provision of improved hangers for shade rollers embodying adjustable tensioning means for frictionally engaging the ends of the roller whereby the shade may be retained in any desired position. I V

A further object of the invention resides in the provision of an improved roller shade hanger intended for rotatably supporting a shade roller havingpull cords associated with the ends thereof for rotating the roller;

In the drawings, and wherein similar ref erence characters designate corresponding parts thru-out the severalviews, the letter A may designate a window casing, B and C a pair of hangers for supporting a shade roller 7 D of cylindricalformation and having wound thereon the shadeE. V

The casing A is of ordinary construction including the archrtraves 5 and tlieinside stop beads 6 having their exposed surfaces in parallel confronting relation. As in common practice, the ordinary types of spring wound roller shades may either beprovided with outside brackets for mounting upon the face sides of the ar'chitraves or may be provided with inside brackets" for mounting upon the confronting surfaces of the inside stop beads, the former ordinarily being called face or outside mounting andthelatter inside mounting. The improved supporting hangers forming'the subject matter of this invention are adapted for use either as outside or inside mountings for the roller shade.

The shade roller 1) is of plane cylindrical formation and is adapted to he rotatably supported at its ends in the hangers Band C. Referring particularly to Figures 1 to 8 inclusive, the hangers {B and C

8 and 10 respectively of reversible and like construction and each in cludes an adjustable holder 1-2 the holders being'of identicalconstruction for-each of the hangers.

' The mounting brackets Sand 10 are of like construction and of angle shape providing a base plate 13 and a side plate 14. The brackets are preferably stamped from sheet metal doubled upon itself as clearly shown incFigure 3 with the portions of the base plate slightly spaced apart to provide a pas sageway opening at the upper and lower ends of the bracket. The spaced apart plates of the base 13 are provided with aligning end apertures 16 and intermediate apertures 17 while the end plate 14 is provided with apertures 18. The

20 and 21 respectively which are removably associated with the base portions 13.

The supporting frame 20 is formed of wire and includes the yoke portion 22 adapted to be inserted upwardly thru thepassageway 15 with the head piece 23 disposed above the top edge of the base portion and providing a. transverse keyway 24 across the upper end of the base portion. The lower end of one arm of the yoke portion is bent inwardly toward the center of the base portion as at 25 and then forwardly at a right angle to the base portion and providing a rest portion 26. At the forward end of the rest portion 26 the wire is bent upwardly at an angle as at 27 and then in a direction away from the side plate 14L and formed into an elongated guide eye 28.

The supporting frame 21 is of substantially like construction as that of the supporting frame 20 and has the wire bent back upon itself as at 27 and continued rearwardly along one side of the portion and then bent at a right angle to the rest portion and formed into an elongated guide eye 28' shown in Figure 5.

30 and 31 respectively wound in opposite directions upon the end portions of the shade roller D. The ends of the pull cords may be secured in any suitable manner to the shade roller and by observing Figure 1 it will be seen that the pull cord 30 acts to wind the shade E upon the roller D while the cord 31 will rotate the roller in an opposite direction for unwinding or lowering the shade. Since the

cords

30 and 31 urtend from opposite sides of the roller D it is required that the guide eyes be disposed at opposite sides of the roller for properly guiding the cords.

Referring now to the construction of the holders 12, the same comprise each a body portion preferably formed from a strip of spring material shaped to provide a vertical rear portion 32 provided at its lower end with a. forwardly extending bottom portion 33 which is connected to the rear portion by a spacer loop Set. From the forward end of the bottom portion 33 is an upwardly and forwardly inclined portion 35 from the upper end of which is a rearwardly and upwardly inclined portion 36 upon the upper rear end of which is provided a. head portion 37 formed by bending the metal upon itself as shown in Figure 2. Glamped at its upper end in the head portion 37 is a spring tensionin arm or strip 38 having its lower arenate end extending in spaced relation to the portions and 36 and with its concaved side in confronting relation to the rear strip portion 32. The upper end of the portion 32 is formed in to a S hook 10 which is oll'set rearwardly from the portion 32.

Rotatably extended thru the head portion 37 and upper portion of the rear strip 32 is an adjusting screw 41 having threaded engagement in a nut 42 disposed at the rear side of the strip portion 32 and held against rotation by the hook 1O. Threaded upon the screw 1-1 at the outer side of the head portion 37 is an adjusting nut 13 adapted for forcibly moving the head portion toward and awa from the rear strip 32.

Tie compressible holders 12 are intended to be removably associated with the mounting brackets and may be positioned thereon by merely hooking the hooks thru the transverse keyways 24 and then swung downwardly into a position resting upon the supporting frame rest portion with the

27 or 27 engaging the inclined holder portions The rest portion 26 will readily yield to permit the lower portion of the holder to move into position with the spacer loop 3 1- engaging the lower portion of the bracket base portion 13. When the holder is in position upon the bracket the inner end of the adjusting screw 4-1 is permitted to enter one of the sets of end apertures 16 as shown in Figure 1.

'The ends of the roller D extend into the holders between the the rear strip 32 and lower arcuate end of the spring arm 38 so that the arm 38 acts as a yieldable brake arm for preventing free rotation of the roller. The tension of the spring arms upon the ends of the roller may be varied by rotating the nut 43.

Referring particularly to Figures 1, 1 and 5 and wherein the hangers have been shown arranged for outside mounting of the roller shades, the

8 and 10 are mounted upon the face side of the window casing by means of screws 45 passed thru the apertures 17 of the base plate 13. When the hangers are so mounted upon the face of the window casing the side plates 14: of the brackets serve to prevent longitudinal movement of the shade roller.

In Figures (3 and 7 the hangers are arranged for inside mounting of the roller shade and are secured to the confronting faces of the stop beads (i by means of screws 416 passed thru the apertures 18 provided in the bracket side plate 14. Thus it will be seen that the brackets are adaptable for use as either inside or outside mounting hangers and that in each case the side plates 14 act to prevent longitudinal shifting of the shade roller.

By observing Figure 4 wherein the hanger has been shown mounted upon the face of the casing it will be seen that only'limited adjustment of the screw 41 could be had with out the inner end of the screw contacting with v the window casing and for this reason the adjusting nut 43 is provided for movement of the head portion 37for placing the desired tension upon the spring arm 38.

Referring to Figure 9, a slightly different arrangement of mounting and constructing the holder has been disclosed and herein the adjusting screw 41, nut 42 and nut 43 have been dispensed with and a wood screw 50 passed thru the head portion 37, holder portion 32 and bracket base portion 18 and threaded into the Window casing. In this arrangement, the screw 50 not only serves as an attaching means for the upperend of the hangerbut also as a contracting means for the -holder 12. With this arrangement the holder is not removable from the bracket without removal of the combined attaching and adjusting screw 50. The arrangement shown in Figure 9 may only be used for outside mounting of the hangers as shown in Figure I and when inside mouting is desired as shown in Figure 6, the holder contracting means as shown in Figure 2 would be required inasmuch as the brackets are secured by means of the side plates 14. 1 means for the shade roller has been provided whereby the desired friction upon the roller may be had for retaining the shade in any desired position.

Changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be made to the form of invention herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of the invention 01' the scope of the following claims.

I claim:

1. A supporting hanger for shade rollers of the class described comprising a mounting bracket, and a contractible roller-receiving holder having an interlocking hooked connection at its upper end with the upper end of the bracket.

2. A supporting hanger for shade rollers of the class described comprising a mounting bracket having a keyway at its upper portion, and a contractible roller-receiving holder including a rear portion having hooked engagement at its upper end in said key'way whereby the holder is-pendently supported upon the bracket' 1.

3. A supporting hanger for shade rollers of the class described comprising a mounting bracket having a slot formed across its upper portion, a yieldab'le rest portion at the lower endof the bracket, anda contractible roller receiving holder'havi-ng a hook at its upper portion for positioning in said slot and adapted to have its lower portion received in said yieldable rest portio 4. A supporting hanger for shade rollers of the class described comprising an angleshaped mounting bracket providing base and side plates, a supportingtrame carried by the'base plate and providing a transverse keyway at the upper end of the base plate, and a contractible roller-receiving holder including a back strip portion having a hook formed at its upper end for engaging in said keyway with the strip portion overlying the base plate. v

5. A supporting hanger for shade rollers of the class described comprising a mounting brackethaving a base portion, a supporting frame including a yoke portion carried by the base portion and including a head piece providing a keyway across the upper end of the base portion, and a contractible rollerreceiving holder including a rear plate having a hook formedat its upper end for insertion thru said .keyway into gripping engage ment with the head piece of said yoke.

6. A supporting hanger for shade rollers of the class described comprising a mounting bracket including b'ase and sideplates, said plates each being provided'witlr fastening element receiving apertures, a supporting frame carried by the base plate including a head piece extending in spaced relation above the upper end of the basepl-a'te and a rest portion extending forwardly from the lower end of the base plate, and a contractible roller-receiving holder including a rear portion having a hook formed at its upper end for engaging behind said head piece, a head portion, means for adjustably moving the head portion toward and away from the rear portion, and a sprin'gtensioning arm carrled' by the head plece for frictionally engagmg the clrcumference of a shade roller.

7. A supporting hanger'for shade rollers of the class described comprising an angleshaped mounting bracket having a transverse slot at its upper end, and a contractible rollerreceiving holder for detachable" connectlon with the bracket including a rear strip hav ing a rearwardly oifset hook at its upper end v for hooked engagement in said slot, a forwardly extending bottom portion, and an upwardly and 'rearwardly bent front portion having ahead provided at its upper end, a spring tensioning arm connected at its upper end to the head portion'and having a. curved lower portion having its concaved side in confronting relation to the rear strip, and adjustable means connecting the head portion with the upper portion of the rear strip.

8. A supporting hanger for shade rollers of the class described comprising an anglesha'ped mounting bracket including base and side plates, a frame including a head piece providing a. transverse slot across the upper end of the base plate and a rest portion extending forwardly from the lower end of the base plate, and a holder for removable positioning upon the bracket including a rear strip having a hook portion at its upper end for hooked engagement with said head piece, a forwardly extending bottom strip, an upwardly extending portion with a head por tion movable toward and away from the rear strip, an adjusting screw rotatably extending thru the head portion and upper portion of the rear strip, a nut at the rear side of the rear strip into which said screw is threaded, an adjusting nut on the screw in bearing engagement with the outer side of the head portion, and a yieldable tensioning arm carried by the head portion and yieldable toward and away from the rear strip.

9. A supporting hanger for shade rollers of the class described comprising an angleshaped mounting bracket providing base and side portions, said portions each being apertured and said base portion being provided with a vertically extending way, a frame including a yoke portion disposed in said way, ahead portion extending in spaced relation above the upper end of the base portion, and a forwardly extending rest portion at the lower end of the base portion, and a holder including a rear portion having a hook provided at its upper end for engaging said head piece, a bottom portion extending forwardly from the rear portion and an upwardly extending portion at the forward end of the bottom portion and having a head portion formed at the upper end thereof, said bottom portion having engagement upon said rest portion, a yieldable tensioning .arm carried by the head portion and yieldable toward and away from said rear portion, and an adjustment screw connecting the head portion with the upper end of the rear holder portion for movement of the head toward the rear portion.

10. In a supporting hanger for shade rollers of the classdescribed, a mounting bracket of angle-shape providing base and side plates, said plates each being provided with fastening element receiving apertures, a supporting frame including a head piece spaced above the upper end of the base plate, a contractible holder including a rear portion and a head portion, said rear and head portions having aligning apertures, a hook formed at the upper end of the rear portion for engaging the head piece of said base plate, a

yieldable roller engaging arm carried by said head portion, and an adjusting screw extending thru the aligning apertures in the head and rear portions of the holder and the upper aperture in the base plate of said bracket.

11. In a supporting hanger for shade rollers of the class described, a mounting bracket including base and side plates, said base plate having a keyway formed along its upper edge, .a roller-receiving holder provided with a hook at the upper end of its rear portion for engaging in said keyway, and a spring tensioning arm, means for contracting the holder, and a rest for the lower end of the holder including an inclined arm portion normally urging the lower end of the holder toward said base plate.

12. In a supporting hanger for shade rollers of the class described, an angle-shaped mounting bracket providing base and end plates, a Wire frame including a yoke portion carried by the base plate and having a head piece spaced above the upper end of the base plate, a rest portion extending forwardly from the lower end of the base plate and an elongated guide eye offset from the forward end of the rest portion, and a roller receiving holder having a. hook formed at its upper side for hooked engagement with said head piece and adapted to have its lower portion resting upon said rest portion, means for contracting the holder, and a yieldable roller engaging arm carried by the holder for frictionally engaging the roller to various degrees thru adjustment of the contrasting means.
