Description

Patented Mar. 31, 1931 V I PATENT oar-rice CARI MIEDBRODT, or BEnmn-RosENTHAL, GERMANY UNITED stars AUTOMATIC anvnnsme-pnvrcn Application filed September 11, 1929, Serial No. 391,946; and in Germany October 27, 1928;
Thisinve'ntionrelates to automatic reversa pipe 11 by a pump 10. Within the control ing devices, for controlling periodically-opcylinder 3 a balanced piston 12 is arranged, erated gas-producers and for similar purthe said? piston being reduced in diameter at poses, of the type inwhic-h change-over valves the middle as shewn.
are periodically" reversed by control pistons Outside the controlcylinder 3 is arranged w or like elements operable by a pressure fluid. a flexible tube 13which if desired may be of According to the invention, I provide aua springy nature. 7 The nozzle 14 is fitted to tomatic reversing devices of this type, charthe end of the tube 13 directed towards the acterized by the fact that the piston or like cylinder 8 whilst the other end of'the tube 13 control element is reversible by periodic adis made of a coiled form and communicates 00 justment of one or more movable directioning with the accumulator 6 by way of a receiver tubes or other conduits through which the 15 and supply tube tube 16; i pressure fluid for operating the said piston A uniformly rotated shaft 18' is located r or like element, is discharged. above the springy or flexible tube 13 and has Preferably, the discharge tube or other mounted thereon a pair of cams 17 upon conduit is springy or flexible and the amount which bear respectively a pair of levers 19 of adjustment of the discharge tube or other and 20 held together so as to-make close conconduit may be limited by stops so as to fix its tact with the aforesaid cams by a spring 21'. end positions with precision. To the levers 19 and 20* are connected respec- In a preferred embodiment of the inventively a pair of links 22-and 23,.the lower'end 7 tion, a tube or other conduit, or each of a of which embrace as shewn aspringy or flex-inumber of such tubes or conduits, is support bletube 13.
ed by a pair of levers operable by control cams The above described reversing device opin such a manner that the said tube or other crates as follows:
conduit is set alternately in front of two In orderto limit the movement of the tube openings communicating with the opposite 13' steps 27 and 28 are provided whilst drawends of a cylinder containinga balanced con- I off pipes-'29 are provided for the flow of fluid trol piston adapted to control the passage of from the chamber into which the'tube 13 proa pressure fluid to and from a second cylinder jec-ts, back to the tank 9;
0 which contains a piston connected with a As the shaft 18 and the cams 17 thereon rochange-over valve. tateat uniform speed, the lever 19 and the An embodiment of the invention as applied cams 20 are each caused, in the course of each to the change-over valve of a periodically oprevolution, to move abruptly inwards toera-ting gas-producer will now be described wards the axis of the cams,thisbeing effectwith reference to the annexed drawing, ed by the spring 21 each time the step on which is, a diagrammatic elevation partially either-of the. cams 17 comes into register with sectioned of the said embodiment. alever 19 or the lever 20 as thecase may be.
In the drawing, the reference numeral 1 The movements imparted by the cams 17 denotes the change-over valve of the gas to the levers 19'and 20 are transmittedto'the producer (not shewn.) This valve is conspringy tube13 through the links 22' and 23 nected with the piston 2a by a piston rod respectively and the nozzle lt is thereby 2b. The cylinder 2 in which the piston 2a opbrought into position facing either the lower crates communicates byrmeans of a pipe 4 or upper control portofthe cylinder 3. The
, with a control cylinder 3 and also communipressure fluid issuingfrom the nozzle 14 finds cates by means of a pipe 5 with a pressure acits way to either one side or the other of the cumulator 6. By means of a pipe 7 the conpiston 12: according to the position of the trol cylinder 3 communicates with the accusa-ifdinozzle sothatthe piston isdriven toward mulator 6 and a pipe 8 connected to the cylinits correspondingend position; In this manw der 3 with a return fluid tank'9. The presner the: reversal of the change-over valve; 1
' sure fluid is fed to the accumulator 6 through ofthe gas producer isinitiated I 1 In the drawing the piston 12 is shewn at the upper end of the cylinder 3 and in this position pressure fluid is admitted from the accumulator to the upper side of the piston 2a in the cylinder 2 through the pipes 7 and 4, thereby closing the valve 1. When'the nozzle 14 is moved upwards so as to face the upper port of the cylinder 3 the piston 12 is moved to its lowermost position and as a result the pressure in the upper part of the cylinder 2 is relieved by the escape of fluid to the pipes 4 and 8. Since the lower part of the cylinder 2 is in communication with the accumulator 6 by way of the pipe 5, the piston 2a and valvel is accordingly reversed. It will thus be apparent that in one end position of the balanced piston 12 the upper side of the piston 2a is subjected to pressure whilst in the other end position of the piston 2a this pressure is relieved. It will also be apparent that when the springy tube 13 moves upwards the piston 12 moves downward and vice-versa.
Instead of the piston 2a being operated by a liquid it may be operated by steam, air or gas; or, alternatively, in cases where the pressure fluid for operating the piston 2a is not the same as that used for the operation of the piston 12, the pressure fluid necessary for the reversing operation is supplied to the pipe 13 by a separate pump device.
Various modifications may be made in the reversing device without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, the control piston 12 may be provided with a piston rod which projects outwards from the head of the cylinder 3 in order that the movement of the said control piston can be effected by hand in the event of a break-down.
I claim 1. Automatic reversing devices comprising the combination with changeover valve means and operating mechanism therefor, of a control element movable in opposite directions by pressure fluid, tubular directioning means for directing pressure fluid for operation of said control element, means for supplying said directioning means with said pressure fluid, a uni-directional driving mem ber, cam means on said member, tappet means "operable by said cam means, and means for operatively connecting said tappet means with said directioning means so as to cause said pressure fluid to act intermittently on said control element in opposite directions alternately.
2. Automatic reversing devices comprising the combination with change-over valve means and operating mechanism therefor, of a control piston movable in opposite directions by pressure fluid, a directing nozzle for directing pressure fluid for operation of said control piston, means for supplying said directing nozzle with said pressure fluid, a unidirectional driving member, cam means on said member, tappet means operable by said cam means, and means for operatively connecting said tappet means with said directing nozzle so as to cause said pressure fluid to act intermittently on said control piston in opposite directions alternately.
3. Automatic reversing devices comprising the combination with change-over valve means and operating mechanism therefor, of a control element movable in opposite directions by pressure fluid, tubular directioning means for directing pressure fluid for operation of said control element, means for supplying said directioning means with said pressure fluid, operating means for said directioning means whereby said pressure fluid is made to act periodically on said control element in opposite directions alternately, and stops for limiting the amount of movement of said tubular directioning means.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
