AUTOMATIC PRESSURE-REGULATOR.

To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that l, JOHN CoLLrs, of Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented an Automatic Pressure- Regulator, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention is a simple method and attachment for maintaining a uniform pressure of stealn in the cylinder of a pump, drying- 1o cylinders, evaporating-pans, and steam-heating apparatus, as required to operate a pump at any rate of speed desired, or to preserve an even temperature in a room or building While the pressure in the generator or source of supply of steam and power varies.
Heretofore a cylindrical valve, a piston, a lever of the second order, and an adjustable weight have been combined with a tube toV regulate steampressure.
My attachment consists in the construction and combination of a distinct cylinder, an auxiliary tube, a piston, a lever of the first order, and a sliding cut-O' valve, as hereinafter fully set forth, in such a manner that irregu lar pressure from the boiler will alternately raise and lower the piston and move the sliding valve in reverse ways, so that the volume of steam allowed to pass will be diminished under heavy pressure and increased under 3o light pressure, to equalize the pressure where v the steam is applied and where uniformity of pressure is to be maintained.

Jointly considered, these figures clearly illus- 4o trate the construction, application, and operation of my complete invention.
Arepresents a section of a steam-conveying tube that may vary in size, as desired, connected with a globe-valve, B, of corresponding size.
O is a short tube on the opposite end of the valve and tube section B.
D is a short tube that has a cylinder, j', formed integrally therewith.
G represents an auxiliary tube about one- 5o fourth as large in diameter as thetubes A and C, connected at one end with the tube A or the generator, and at its opposite end with the cylinderf in the tube D.

In place of connecting the auxiliary tube G' with the cylinder f,to operate the piston h, andl thereby the cut-oft' valve o, by means of the le- 95 ver k, I connect the auxiliary tube direct with the valve-chamber m and cylinder m', as indicated by dotted linesin Fig. l, and reverse the position of the lever k, to thereby operate the valve o to regulate the pressure in the tube A2 by duplicating the parts n and o' and placing them between the cylinder m and the tubesection A2, so that the position of the valve will also be reversed when the position ofthe lever is reversed and the lever changed from a lever of the first order to a lever of the second order. In some places there is not suflicient room to extend the lever 7c toward the valve B, and hence the necessity for reversing the position ofthe lever and connecting the auxiliary tube direct with the cut-off or regulatingvalveo.
In the practical operation of my device and method of maintaining a uniform pressure in one portion of a steam-conveying tube While it varies in another part, I simply adjust the balance-weight w on the lever and scale-beam k to the figure on the scale that indicates the uniform pressuredesired, and then open the valve B to allow the steam to pass through the main tube, and also into the auxiliarytube G. If only twenty pounds pressure is to be maintained at the point of delivery and forty or eighty pounds is received from the generator, the piston connected with the beam and lever k will rise and cause the valve o to descend to diminish the opening in the valve-cha1nber and tube-section m, as required to diminish the flow and volume of steam and maintain a uniform pressure in that part of the tube A2 that extends from the regulating-valve 0 to the pump-cylinder, drying-pan, or radiator Where the steam is to be utilized. Any desired uni-V form pressure may thus be readily maintained by means of an auxiliary tube, a regulating valve, and suitable valveoperating mechanism; and by using a vertically-sliding valve that descends to the bottom of the continuous tube water will not be retained in the tube to obstruct the passage of steam.
I claim as my inventionl. A pressure-regulator consisting of the followingnamed elements, to wit: a steam-c0n veying tube, an auxiliary tube, a cylinder, a piston, a valve-chamber in the main tube, a valve adapted to enlarge and diminish the passage in the main tube, a lever, and an adjustable Weight, arranged and combined to operate in the manner set forth, forthe purposes specifled.
2. A tube-section having a distinct and complete open-ended cylinder, f, formed integral therewith, and extending through its diameter, for the purposes specified.
3. The combination of a tube-section, A, a valve, B, a tube-section havinga cylinder extending at right angles therewith, a piston, a lever, an auxiliary' valve, the continuous tube, and an auxiliary tube, G, to operate in the manner set forth, for the purposes specitied.
4. The combination of a tube-section, A, a valve, B, a cylinder, f, and piston h t', a tubesection vand valve-chamber, m, having a cylinder, m a r, a valve, o, having a piston., o', a scale-beam and lever, k, fulcruin l, a balanceweight, w, and an auxiliary tube, G, to operate in the manner set forth, for the purposes specied.
