Description
STATES PATENT JULIUS FITTS, OF WEST STERLING, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAINTING FLOWER-POTS.
Specification forming an of Letters Patent No. 1 79,905, dated July is, 1876; application filed January 17, 18.76.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JULIUS FITTS, of West Sterling, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Painting Flower- Pots;'and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents mechanism constructed in accordance with my invention, the same being a front view, showing a flowerpot in position. Fig. 2 represents a transverse sectional view or" the same, and Fig.3 an enlarged sectional view of the head of the supporter.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and convenient means for holding and handling flower-pots during the operation of painting and striping.
The nature of my invention consists in the employment of mechanism such as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, A denotes the supporting table or frame. B indicates a conoidal headhlock fixed to the end of a spindle, B, supported by standard b above the table A, and made to rotate by power applied through a suitable pulley or crank, O. The rotating conoidal head B is of proper size to partially enter the month or larger end of the flowerpots'l) in the manner indicated, and thus support them without exerting sufficient wedging force to injure the material.
E indicates a holder or 'pressure bar arranged in line with the axis of the conoid B, and provided with a swiveled head or cap, F, fitted to revolve freely on the forward end of said bar E, where it is retained by a pin, 0, passing through the head F, and fitting into a groove cut around the bar. (See Fig. 3.)
The head F is made with a flat face to rest against the bottom part of the flower-pot D, and the bar E is arranged to slide longitudinally in its bearing-frame G, while a yielding spring, H, is provided for throwing forward the parts to press the head F against the bottom of the pots, thereby to retain them against the conoid B, where they are caused to revolve by their friction against the latter, while the swiveled head F supports them firmly and squarely in position, the paint being applied to their surface by a brush or otherwise, as desired.
A forked lever, I, is provided for compressin g the spring H and drawing back the presser-bar E, for releasing the pot D. Said lever I is pivoted to the bar E, fulcrumed at its centerf to the frame G, and has its lower end connected by a strap, K, with the foot-treadle L, by depressing which the operator is enabled to quickly remove and replace the pots in position.
The head F maybe made with an entire flat face, or with a small conical central point, to enter the opening in the bottom of the pots, as desired.
The frame G is made adjustable upon the table A by the bolt N, which passes through a slot, and is clamped by the thumb-nut N, as indicated, to adapt the mechanism to pots of different sizes.
The use of the yielding pressure bar E and the swiveled head F, in combination with the conoid B, permits of the pots being securely held while painting, and obviates all liability of injury.
Having described my improvements in painting flower-pots, what claim as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, with rotating mechanism for supporting the large end of a tlowerpot, of a yielding pressure-bar, provided with a loose or swiveled head or cap, for pressing against the bottom of the pot to retain it in position, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a rotating conoidal head-block, of a yielding presser, adapted to support a flower-pot against the conoidal surface of the rotating head, and mechanism for drawing back and releasing said presser, substantially as herein set forth.
3. The combination, with the rotating conoidal head-block B, of the presser-bar E, provided with its swiveled cap F, spring H, lever I, and strap and treadle K L, all constructed and arranged for joint operation substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
