This invention relates to molds, and'more particularly to the class of molds which are adapted for casting post connecters to storage battery posts.
The objects of the invention are:
First, to provide a mold of the character described which can cast a connecter directly on the battery posts without any special skill as to the use of a blow torch or knowledge of lead melting being required.
Second, to provide a mold which will eliminate the necessity of carrying a large stock of different lengths and makes of finished connectors in view of the connecter being cast L directly on the posts of each individual battery, as described.
Third, to provide a mold which is open on its top, including the end sections which surround the posts, so that the part of the mold receiving the metal and the progress of the metal as it is melted are always visible, thereby enabling a novice to make a perfect joint between the posts of the battery and the finished connecter, an operation which heretofore required considerable skill and ability to avoid supplying superfluous molten metal.
Fourth, to provide a mold of the character described which can be readily made of different sizes or lengths at a minimum cost and labor, easily assembled, and properly and firmly secured to the posts of a battery for properly casting the connecter and at the same time fusing the connecter to the battery 0st with the minimum of effort and skill.
Fifth, to provide a means for clamping the sections of the mold to the posts of the battery prior to the casting of the connecter which is disposed and cooperates with the under section of the mold, and said means 7 can be easily and manually operated by grip ping the same exteriorly of the battery box.
Sixth, to provide a mold of the character described which after the connecter has been properly cast and secured to the posts of the battery, the mold can be readily disassembled, detached and freed from the cast connecter and battery posts by a slight blow, without in any way injuring or destroying the usefulness of the mold or disturbing the shape of 50 the finished connecter or varying the fixed 1929. Eighth, other objects and advantages of the construction and operation will, appear from the detailed description of the parts, manner of attaching and detaching the mold from the posts and casting the connecter to be hereinafter more fully described.
The mvention consists of structural characterlstics and relative arrangement of elements which will be presently more fully disclosed and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings, the mold comprises two similar half sections 10 and 11, preferably made of malleable cast iron, or other suitable metal or alloy. These sections are provided on their upper sides with two semi-circular and registering depressions 12, 12, which form circular cavities or pockets 13,
13 at their ends, as clearly shown in Figure 1.
These cavities or pockets 13, 13 are open at the top and bottom, the bottom opening 14 being relatively smaller and adapted to accurately conform to the larger lower portion 15 of the terminals 16 of battery 17, as indicated in Figure 3.
The sections 10 and 11 are so proportioned, formed, or cut out, so that the cavities or pockets 13, 13 areconnected or joined by a trough-shaped channel 18, which is preferably trapezoidal in cross section, as shown 1 H in Figure 4, with its base 19 at the bottom and the under side or surface 20 on section 11 being so inclined to the base 19 as to form a downwardly inclined surface 21 to receive notations 22 as to the origin of the finished 2 1 an unthreaded circular passage 26.
27 is an elongated thumb screw or bolt having a threaded end or section 28 adapted to pass through the passage 26 and engage the threads of bore 25. Preferably at the inner end of the threaded section 28 is formed a fixed'collar or abutment 29, and at the other and outer end of the elongated unthreaded portion 30 is provided a flat thumb grip 31 by which said screw27 can be turned and the two sections 10 and 11 be drawn towards each other and assume the position, as indicated in Figuresl and 4, and be clamped on the posts 16, 16 of a battery 17, as illustrated in Figure 3, as will be readily understood. and needs no further explanation. The thumb screw bolt 27 being elongated and provided with the extension or unthreaded portion 30 enables the thumb grip 31 to be disposed beyond the upper face or top of the battery and, hence, readily turned without coming in con- I tact with any portion of the battery frame or its connecters and terminals.
The sections 10 and 11 are made of the same length, but are arranged so that the planes of their ends are not in the same plane but one section'projects over the end of the other so as to form a shoulder 32 in each end of the assembled sections 10 and 11 or clamped adjusted mold, as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
The functions of these shoulders 32,32 is for the purpose of providing a projection or surface which can be tapped or hit with any suitable tool or hammer after the poured metal has set or sufiiciently cooled and the thumb screw 27 has been removedfrom the sections 10 and 11 to quickly separate said sections 10 and 11 and detach the same from the attached connecter without being comthe battery, terminals, or completed connecter.
The operations of the invention are as follows:
The sections 10 and 11 are separated by slightly unscrewing the thumb screw 27 and they are then positioned so as to permit the posts 16 and 16 to be properly seated in the pockets 13, 13. The sections 10 and 11 are then, by tightening up the thumb screw 27, moved towards and in contact with each other and the posts 16, 16, to assume the position shown in Figures 3 and 4.
The molten metal is then poured into the mold and fused together with the battery posts until it is flush with the top of the mold and after the cast connecter is cooled, the thumb screw 27 is loosened by turning the same in the reverse direction to enable the sectionslO and 11 of the mold to separate sufliciently to be freed from the cast and set connecter. The projections 32, 32 of the mold sections 10 and 11 are then slightly tapped when the mold is quickly and expeditiously detached from the finished connecter carried or attached to the battery posts.
From the foregoing disclosure of the construction, arrangement and mode of applying the invention that all the functions, objects and advantages of the improved mold, as recitedin the statement of invention, have been fully and efficiently carried out and in one operation the connecter is accurately fitted, formed and connected with the posts of the battery.
What I claim is: V
1. A mold for casting battery post 0011- necters, comprising a pair of sections adapted to be abutted against each other and arranged about said battery posts and having separated semi-circular depressions on their upper sides adapted to form pockets in the ends thereof about said battery posts and having an upper channel connecting said pockets, each of said sections having a lug projecting from its under side and between said semicircular depressions, and a single rod normally passing through and engaging each of said lugs adapted to force said sections together and into contact with the battery posts.
2. A mold for casting battery post connecters,comprising a pair of sections adapted to be abutted against each other and arranged about said battery posts and having separated semi-circular depressions on their upper sides adapted to form pockets in the ends thereof about said battery posts and spaced therefrom throughout their major portion and having an upper channel connecting said pockets, and each of said sections having one of its ends projecting beyond the adjacent 1 end of the other section, and a single rod in- V terposed between said depressions and passp'elled to touch said sections or any part of ing through and engaging said pair of sections below the channel for'r'emovably clamping said sections together and to the battery posts.

A mold for casting battery post con-, necters, comprising a pair of sections adapted and having a channel trapezoidal in cross section with its base at the bottom connecting said pockets, and each of said sections having one of its ends projecting beyond the adjacent end of the other section, and a single rod interposed between said separated depressions and normally passing through and engaging sections below the channel for removably forcing said sections together and into contact with the battery posts.
