`This invention relates to a well tool and relates more particularly to a jarring tool adapted to be used in a well during fishing operations, and the like. i
Various forms of tools have been suggestedl and employed in fishing operations to impart a jarring action to parts or tools within a well. The usual or common forms of jarring tools include sections, connected for limited l@ relative longitudinal movement, that are normally held against movement in a contracted position and include means which suddenly release the sections for movement to cause a violent jarring or hammering action between shoulders or suitably designed parts on the sections. In the usual forms of jarring tools the loosely connected sections are released, to cause the jarring action, by rotating the operating member or string or by varying the pressure on the circulation iuid passed b the operating member. It is not always esirable or practical to rotate the operating string to actuate a jarring tool or to vary the pressure on the circulation fluid to operate such a tool. Further, the types of jarring tools op'- erated by rotation embody parts that are subjected to severe strains and which soon'become worn and inoperative.
It is a general `object of the present invention to provide a jarring tool for use in a well that may be operated without rotating the operating member or without varying the pressure on the fluid in the-operating meniber. The tool provided by the present invention is operable by simple reciprocation of the operating member.
It is another object of the invention topro- -mar1ly to be employed in ishing operations,

Other objects and features of invention will be best and more fully understood from the following detaileddescription of a typif cal form and application of the invention throughout which description reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig'. l is a longitudinal detailed sectional view of the tool provided by this invention illustrating it in the contracted or unactuated position. The jarring tool which embodies the s present invention includes,v generally, two l sections A and B connected or related for limited relative longitudinal movement-and adapted to be connected between an operating string and the part to be jarred, latch j means 10for releasably holding the sections A and B in a contracted osition against relative movement, and yieldable control .lmeans 11 whereby the latches are released upon a predetermined strain being imparted to the sections A and B.
The sections A and B, which are the body or main elements of the tool, constitute an assembly adapted to be connected Vbetwieen the `object to be jarred and an operating string. The sections A. and B may be connected between parts of an operating mem- A 2'., ber if desired. The body sections A and Bv are connected-for .'elative longitudinal movement. In the preferred form of the invention the sections A and B are telescoped, that is, one section `extends into or is arranged j within the other. In the particular case i1- lustrated in the drawin the section A is the upper section and is tu ular and the section B is the lower section and extends into the section A. In this form of the invention` the section A is adapted to be connected with an operating member or operating string, while the section B is adapted to be connected with theobject to be jarred. It will be obvious lthat the lower section, that is, the section B may be made tubular to receive the upper section A without departing from the broader principles of the present invention.
- The section A of the tool is the upper or outer section and encases the various principal parts of thetool. The body section A is l an elongated tubular member and may be v constructed in various manners. In the particular formofthe invention illustrated the outer section A isformed of two simple parts, a mlain or body part 12, and a head or upper part 13. The lower portion 18 of the section B projects into the lower end of the body part 12 of the section A and is slidable in the opening 20 through the flange 16. The lower portion 18 projects downwardly from the lower end of the section A and the downwardly projecting portion may be provided with any suitable means for connection. or attachment with a fishing tool or other part. A collar 21 is screw threaded on the portion 18 below the lower end of the section A. The upper end of the collar 21 is adapted to cooperate Awith the lower end of the body part l2 of the section A to limit` the relative longitudinal movement of the sections A and B in one direction.

The shoulder 24 is adapted to engage the shoulder-17 to limit the relative longitudinal movement of the sections A and B in one direction while the collar 21-is adapted toengage the lower endV of the section A to limit `the relative movement of the sections in the other direction.
The upper portion 19 of the section B is an elon ated part which projects or extends a consi erable distance through the section A. The lower end of the upper portion 19 maybe screw threaded into a socket 25 in the,
upper end of thefportion 18. The upper end of the portion 19 extends into and is slidable in the opening 15. The portion 19 of the section B 1s of considerably less diameter than the interior of the part 12 of the sect-ion A so that an annular space is provided between the portion 19 and the interior of the part 12.
The latch .means 10 is provided to releaskably hold the sections A and B of the tool against relative longitudinal movement when 27 connected withV one of the sections A or B through the yielding means 11 and adapted to cooperate with apart or shoulder o n the other section to releasably hold the two sectionsagainst relative longitudinal movement. The latches 27 may be connected with in the contracted or unactuated position. I' The latch means 10 includes a latch or latches either of the'sections A or B through thev l means 11 to cooperate with the other section. In the partlcular case illustratedthe .latahes 27 are connected with the section A thro'iigh the means 11 to cooperate with a shoulder 30 on the section B to releasably hold the sections A and B against relative longitudinal movement. The latches 27 are shiftably mounted within the section A.
The latches 27 may be supported on a carrier 31 shiftably mounted in the annular space between the upper part 18 of the section B and the interior of the part 12 oli' the section A. The carrier is mounted above the upper end of the lower portion 18 of the section B. The carrier 31 may be .an annular member slidably guided on the inner walls of the part 12 of the section A. The carrier 31- is provided withV a central opening 32 freely passing the upper portion 19 of the section B. There may be any desired number of latches 27 supported on the carrier 31. The latches 27 are pivotally connected with the carrier and are adapted to act under compression when engaging the shoulder 30 to releasably hold the section A and B against relative movement. The lower ends of the latches 27 seat. in recesses 33 in the upper port-ion of the carrier 31. In the particular form of the invention illustrated there are three:
latches 27 equally spaced about the central longitudinal axis of the tool. The lower ends of the latches 27 are pivotally mounted in the v'from or operate off the shoulder when per# recesses 33 by pivot pins 34 extending transversely through the recesses 33 and through openings in the lower portionsof the latches 27. The latches 27 project upwardly from the carrier 31 and their upper portions or ends are adapted to cooperate with or engage the annular shoulder 30 on the section B. The shoulder 30 is provided on the portion 19 of the section B above the carrier 31 when it is'in the normal or unactuated position. The shoulder 30 may be provided by the lower end of a replaceable bearingring 36 screw threaded on the portion 19. The upper end of the ring 36 may seat against a downwardly facing shoulder 37 on the portion 19. The shoulder 30 and the upper ends of the latches 27 are formed so that the latches readily slide mitted to release through the yielding of the means 11. -In the case illustrated the shoulder 30 is beveled upwardly and outwardly and the upper ends of the latches 27 are provided with correspondingly shaped Afaces 38 to `seatagainst the shoulder 30.A The latch carrier 31 is sup orted by or connected with the section A t rough the yielding means 11 and normally carries the latches 27 so that they are in cooperatlve engagement with the shoulder 30 and act under compression between the shoulder and the carrier 31 'to releasably hold the sectionsA and B against relative longitudinal movement. In accordance with the invention `means is provided for holding the latches 27 in determined tensile strain and the means 11 has yielded a certain amount. A sleeve 40 is slackly or loosely connected with the body part 12 of the section A to normally retain the faces 38 of the latches 27 against the shoulder 30. The sleeve40 is slidably arranged witliin the part 12 above the upper ends of the latches 27 The sleeve v40 may be slidable on the exterior of the portion 19 of the section B. T he sleeve 40 is mounted within the part l2 for limited longitudinal movement relative to the section A and accordingly relative to the section B. A part in the form' of a screw 41 projects inwardly from the interior of the part 12 of the section A and extends into a longitudinal groove 42 on the exterior of the sleeve 4() to prevent rotation of the sleeve and to limit the movement of the sleeve 40 relative tov that the upper ends of the latches 27 extend into the recesses 43 andare in cooperative engagement with the shoulder 30 when the parts are in .the normal or unactuated position. Upon relative movement of the sections A and B through yielding of the means l1 the screw 41 causes the sleeve 40 to move with the section A and upon the means 11 yielding a predetermined extent the sleeve,
40 is shifted out of engagement with the upper ends of the latches 27 so that the latches 27 are free to operate'o the shoulder 30.
In the preferred form of the invention means is provided for returning thev latches 27 to their normal positions in engagement with the shoulder 30 after actuation. In the particular case illustrated leaf springs 44 project from the carrier 31 and engage the outer lsides of the latches 27 to urge the upper ends of the latches inwardly.
The yielding means 11 is in the nature of i a control for the latch meansv 10 and is operable to cause the release of the latches 27 from the shoulder 30 through yielding a certain extent toa predetermined tensile strain.' The means 11 connects the carrier 31 with thesectionv A ofthe tool. The means 11 lincludes one or Amore yieldable members 50 connectingthe carrier 31 with the section A. The members 50 are extensible or capable of .elongation and are'resilient so that Ythey contract vor return to their normal lsize or length after actuation.
Inaccordance with this formv of invention e the members 50 are in the form of cables. Themembers 50 may be formed of ystranded cable having vthe ldesired characteristics or isc members 50 depending upon their ualites.

The block 51 may be screw threaded in the part 12 and may have a central oplening 52 slidably passing the portion 19 of t e section B. The upper ends of the members `may be connected with the block 51 in any suite able manner, while the lower-ends of the members 50 may be secured to 'the carrier 31 by any suitable means. In the form of the invention illustrated the upper end portions of the members 50 extend through openings 53 in the sub Vblock 51. An enlargement orhead 5ft-is provided on the upper end of each member 50 to seat against the upper end of the block 51 to prevent the displacement of the members 50 from the openin s 53. The lower endportions of the members 50 may extend through openings 55 in the carrier 31. The extreme lower portions Vof the members 50 may be wedged into the openings 55 to be securely connected to the carrier 31. The members 50 are preferably made comparatively long so that they will -have the desired range of extension without being weakened or fractured through tlie tensile strain imparted on the tool.
It is preferred to'provide means for c1rculating fluid through the tool. In the form of the inventionillustrated a central longitudinal opening extends completely through the section B of the tool from one `cnd to the other. The upper end of the openthe part 13 of section A, while the lower end ing 60 communicates with the opening 15 of of the opening 6 0 ma discharge into the tool or part attached to t 1e lower end of the section B. In the preferred form of the invention grooves are provided in .the opening 20 through the flange 16 to permit the release of fluid trapped within'the body A between the shoulders 17 and 24 when the sections are released for movement.
It is believed that the operation of the' jarring tool provided by the resent uwen-- tion will be readily apparent rom the foregoing detailed description. Where the tool 1s em loyed within a well in connection with a ishin tool in engagement with a lostl ob- 'ect or h within'the well, the tool and fishmg tool are suspended or carried at the lower end of an operating, string such as a string of drill pipe, or the like. The parts of the 'arring-tool are normally in the positlons Y' illustrated in'Fig. 1 of the drawings. VVheu it is desired to actuate the`tool to impart a jarring action to theob]ect engaged by` 4section A and yield to `permit the section A to shift or move relative to the section B. Movement of the section A relative tothe section B causes movement of the sleeve 40 relative to the section B and accordingly the latches 27. Upon a predetermined tensile strain beine'v exerted on the section A while the section is held stationary the members 50-yield a. certain'amount to permit the scction lA to shift a given distance relative to the section B so that the sleeve 40 is shifted out of engagement with the upper ends of the latches 27. Upon the release of the sleeve 40'from the latches 27 the com ression strain on the latches causes the latc es to o erate 0H the shoulder 30 to suddenlyrelease It e sections A and B for relative longitudinal movement. Upon releasing of the ll 'tches 27 the shoulder 17 on .the section A is vrought into hammering or i shoulder 24 on e section B.

A well tool of the character described including, two sections related`for limited relative longitudinal movement, a projecting part on one section, a latch adapted to engage the said part to releasably hold the sections against relative longitudinal movement, and means for causingthe latch to release upon a predetermined strain being exerted on the sections, including a member connecting the latch and the other section and operable upon a tensile strain applied toit to cause the release of the latch.
7. A well tool of the character described including, two sections related for limited -ing a member connecting the latch and' the other section and operable upon -a tensile strain applied to it to cause the release of the latch.

A well tool of the character described including, two sections rela-ted for limited relative longitudinal movement, a projectingpart on one section, a pivoted shiftably mounted latch adapted to engage the said part to releasably hold the sections against rela-tive longitudinalmovement, and means for causing the latch to release upon a predetermined strain being exerted on the sections, includin a member connecting the latch and the ot er section and operably upon a tensile strain applied to it to cause the releaseof the latch.

A well tool of the character described including, two sections related for limited relative longitudinal movement, a projecting part on one section, a latch adapted to engage the said part to releasably hold the sections againstrelative longitudinal move-v' ment, means on the 'other section normallyA retaining the `latch in engagement with the` part, and means for causing the latch'to `release upon a predetermined strain being exferted on the sections, including a member connecting the latch and the other'section and operable upon a tensile strain applied to itv to cause the release of the latch.
