IMPROVEMENT IN HEAT-DEFLECTORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,844, dated July 18,1876; application led December 22, 1875.
To all whom it may concern.-
B-e it known that I, ABNER J. DoNLE, of Barrington, in the county of Bristol, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Heat-Dedector, and declare the following to be a specification thereof.
In the accompanying drawing like letters indicate like parts.
Figure lis a perspective view of my improved heat-deflector. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same longitudinally upon the center line. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views. Fig. 5 is a vertical section transversely along the center line. Fig. 6 shows the adaptation of my invention to a vertical register.
Y My invention consists of a deflecting-plat'e of metal, marble, or other suitable material, properly applied to a hot-air register at a short distance from it, for the purpose of changing the direction of the currents of the hot air, and spreading` them, so as to heat more eectually the lower portions of the room.
In the present mode of heating, the currents of heated air arise from the register directly to the ceiling, and then descend; hence the air near and upon the floor is heated last, and is colder than in other parts of the room. But by the use of my deflecting-plate the heat does not immediately arise, but is thrown out into the room in diverging currents near the door, heating the lower portion of the room first, and rendering the apartment more comfortable.
A sheet or plate of metal, or slab of marble, A, forms the deilecting-surace. It is supported by legs B B, and is placed over, and covers, the register C at a little height above it. Upon the upper portion of the plate A is erected a foot-rest, D, properly secured by braces E E. Bolts F F pass through the plate A, and are provided on the under side with nuts. ASteadying-pins G G fit upon the bolts F F beneath the plate A, and between it and the nuts, and are capable of a horizontal adjustment by means of an extended head, a, with a long slot, b, which engages with the bolts F F. The steadying-pins are longer than the legs B, and en ter between the interstices c of the open iron-work of the register. They are made ad- `instable for the purpose of so engaging them with the pattern of the iron-Work ofthe register that they will firmly hold the detlector' in position to resist horizontal pressure or displacement. f
rIhe rising current of heated air impinges onA the lower surface of the plate A, and is broken into diverging currents on every side, passing beneath the plate, and entering the room in horizontal directions.
When the register is situated near the wall it will be necessary to protect the mopboard or other Wood-work from the heat by means of a plate of metal, H, extending from the plate A to the floor, and conforming to the shape of the dei-lector. This plate H may be fastened in place in any suitable manner.
Fig. 6 shows the adaptation of my invention in' cases where the register is verticalas in the wall or mantel-piece. In such case it is necessary that the deflecting-plate A' shall cover the register entirely at the top and sides, and leave a passage for the heat on the lower side only.
The hot air, in passing through the register, strikesagainst the plate A', and, as there is no egress above or on either side, it descends and enters the room in diverging currents, as before described.
The foot-rest D', supported by braces E' il', projects from the lower edge of the plate A'. Thewhole is fastened to the wall or mantelpiece, by bolts or otherwise, at a sufcient distance above the licor to permit the free escape of the heated air. The plate A' must be formed in a bow or bell shape, with a daring mouth opening downward, and should be tted to the wall closely at the top and sides, to prevent the passage of the hot air in those directions.
If the regulator of the upright register is at the upper side, a lever shouldbe connected with it, and pass through the plate A', to be operated on the outside, as otherwise the regulator could not be readily moved.
I claim as a novel and useful invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of a deliecting plate or surface, A, legs B B, and adjustable steadyin g-pins G G, as and for 'the purpose specified.
2. The steadying-pins G G, adjustable by means of the slotted head a b, and bolus and nuts F F, in combination with a heat-deflector, A B, substantially as described and specied.
3. The combination of a heat-deflecting. plate, A, with a foot-rest, D, substantially as described.
4. The heat-deecting apparatus herein particularly described, consisting of adeectingplate, A, legs B B, foot-rest D, braces E E, bolts and nuts F F, steadying-,pins G G, wit-l1 or Without the protecting-plate H, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
