Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. ULSH, OF PFOUTSVALLEY, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN AUTOMATIC ATTACHMENTS FOR MOLASSES-GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,825, datedJuly 11, 1876; application filed May 19, 1876.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES MORROVV ULsH, of Pfouts Valley, in the county of Perry and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molasses- Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is aside elevation of my improved molasses-gate, and Figs. 2 and 3 are detached views thereof.
Corresponding parts in the two figures are designated by like letters.
This invention relates to a certain impror'ement in molasses-gates; and it consists of a tripdever, to the handle of which is connected the measuring-cup standing upon the scales, its opposite end retainingin a horizontal position a pivoted weighted bar, fulcrumed in an upright, the weight upon the pivoted bar being connected to the faucet or gate proper, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
-In the annexed drawing, A refers to a platformscule, with the graduated bar, to which the weight is adjusted, removed. In the upright a of the platform of the scales is pivoted,. at or about its center, a bar, B. Upon the outer end of this bar B is placed a weight, O, which may be replaced by another of different weight, according to the amount of liquid or molasses to be drawn 01f. D is a triplever, fulcrumed into an arm, d, of the upright, for retaining the bar B, when weighted, in a horizontal position. The handle of the trip-lever- D is connected, by a chain or other medium,
6, to the measuring-cup. The weight upon the tilting bar B is connected, by a chain or other suitable means, f, to the faucet or gate proper, g. 1
The operation of my invention is as follows: The faucet or gate proper, g, is opened, as shown in Fig. 2, the weight 0 placed in position upon the tilting bar B, and the trip-lever D adjusted to the bar B, and connected to the measuring cup. The liquid or molasses will now enter the cup upon the scales, and continue to flow into the cup until it is about full, and cause the scale to descend, carrying with it the measure or cup and its contents. This I will trip the lever D and allow the bar .15 to be tilted, causing the weight 0 tofall therefrom in a suspended position and close the faucet or gate, stopping the flow of liquid or molasses.
The barrel or cask containing the molasses, and having the faucet or gate proper, g, is suitably elevated and disposed with reference to the gate-closing mechanism, as shown in the drawing.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is-- I The scales A, having the upright a, provided with the tilting bar B and trip-lever D, in combination with the weight 0, connected to the gate g, and lodged upon the tilting bar, all arranged to act conjoiutly, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto alfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. JAS. MORROW ULSH.
