W. D. ANTRIM OVEN DOOR HINGE FOR GAS RANGES Filed April 12, 1929 QTEYTSWE Patented Mar. 24, 1931 UNITED STATES WILLIAM D. ANTRIM, 0F GLOUCESTER, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR T0 ROBERTS &
UNITS??? PATENT OFFICE MANDER STOVE COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA OVEN-DOOR HINGE FOR GAS RANGES Application filed April 12,
My invention relates to certain improvements in the hinge arrangements for the oven doors of gas ranges disclosed in an application for patent filed by me on the 11th day of October, 1928, Serial No. 311,822.
The object of my present invention is to improve the abutment for the spring, so that the spring can be readily removed or replaced without danger to the operator.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a gas range having an oven and a broiler, the top of the range being omitted;
' Fig. 2 is a view showing the back of the front frame of the range and the doors, and illustrating the spring hinge mechanism;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged View showing the hinge mechanism;
Fig. 4 is sectional view on the line 4-4, Fig. 2;
Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are views of the detachable spring abutment.
The front plate 1 of the range has an opening 2 for the oven and an opening 3 in the present instance for a broiler. These openings are closed by doors 4 and 5, respectively.
Each door has concealed hinges 6 which are shaped to rock in bearings on the frame 1, and each hinge 6 is extended to form a pocket 7 for the end of a fiat spring 8 which extends from one hinge to the other as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The centre of the spring 8 rests against an abutment 9 which is secured to the frame 1 or to any fixed portion of the body of the range.
The spring tends to retain the door of the range either in its closed position or in its extreme open position, but when the door is raised from its extreme open position the spring will close the door.
This construction is fully disclosed and claimed in my copending application re- 1929. Serial No. 354,591.
9 is made removable, it being secured to a lu 10 on the frame by a bolt 11.
The face 12 of the abutment 9 is curved to allow the spring to slide thereon as the door is moved to either the open or closed position. The abutment has ribs 1313 which extend on each side of the lug 10 as shown in Fig. 3, so that one boltwill hold the abutment in a rigid position.
As the oven door 4 is larger than the broiler door 5, the spring 8 of the oven door is wider and consequently heavier than the spring of the broiler door; and where a narrow spring is used, then I prefer to form an integral guard 14 on the frame 1 directly under the abutment 9 as shown in Fig. 4, preventing the spring turning over when the door is open or closed.
I claim 1. The combination of a frame for a gas stove; a door mounted in the frame and having hinge projections arranged to rock on the frame; a flat spring, the ends of which bear against the hinge projections; a lug projecting from the rear of the frame at or near the centre thereof; an abutment for the spring located under the lug; and a vertical bolt securing the abutment to the lug.
2. The combination of a frame for a gas stove; a door mounted in the frame and having hinge projections arranged to rock on the frame; a flat spring, the ends of which bear against the hinge projections; a lug projecting from the rear of the frame at or near the centre thereof; an abutment for the spring detachably secured to the lug; and a guard on the frame directly under the abutment.
