UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT G. MOLELLAN, OF WOODSTOCK, ONTARIO, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TAILORS MEASURES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179.808, dated July 11, 1-876 application filed January 31, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT GRANT Mc- LELLAN, of the town of Woodstock, in the county of Oxford, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on Tailors Measures and Drafting-Scales; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of thesame.
This invention relates to an indicator for taking the measure, and scales or charts for drafting the measurements so obtained; and it consists, first, of a flexible band for strapping under the arm-pits, having a transverse sliding arm provided with studs, for holding the ring of a measuring-tape, and a thumb and clamp screw for regulating and fixing the arm to any desired adjustment, the object being to adapt the band for use at either side of the body, for taking measurements from the stud-points second, a measuring-square provided with a measuring-scale and notch at one end, and a movable arm pivoted at the other end, to close compactly, to be used for measuring the back of coats third, a draftingchart rule, having studs corresponding with the body-band, and in line with the sliding arm a fixed line, and also geometrical tables for sleeve measurements, and proportions for bodies.
Figure 1 is a diagram of my improved measuririg-indicator. Fig.2 is a diagram of my improved back-measuring square. Fig. 3 is a diagram of one side of my drafting-chart. Referring to Fig. 1. A is a flexible band, having studs B, O, D, E, F, and G, to hold the ring of a measuring-tape, and the body and shoulder straps. To the .stud B the body-strap H is attached, and loops on the stud G. I is a shoulder-strap 0n the stud F, looping, when adjusted to the body, on the stud O. E is the stud for holding the ring of a measuring-tape, when boys are being measured, and F the stud when menare being measured. The stud E, to prevent false use, is formed with a screwshat't, to project rearward when not in use. J is a slotted check-bar, secured slidingly to the band A by a clamping-bolt nut, K, and is fastened at any adjusted position by the clamp-screw L. On the ends of the arm J are s'tuds M, to which the ring of a measuring-tape is attached. This bar is adjusted close against the fore .shoulder, the band H passing under the arm-pi't.
By means of the slotted sliding bar the device can be adjusted to take measurements from either side of the body.
Referring to Fig. 2, N is an arm, pivoted at the lower corner of the rule, preferably of some flexible material, which rule has a scale, 0, and a notch, P, at its opposite end. The arm is provided with a slot, Q, having a sliding stud, which engages in a notch, R, in the rule, when at right angles thereto, and with a notch, S, when closed.

Referring to Fig. 3, one side has marks or studs corresponding to the studs B, D, E, and F, and atabulated chart of geometrical allowances for mens over, sack, and frock coats; and on the reverse side, Fig. 4., a geometrical table of sleeve measurements, based on the circumference of the scye, (arm-hole,) and at one end marks D E F, and centrally-angular lines A B A 0 for skirt-drafting.
I claim as my invention- 1. The flexible band. A, having studs B, O, D, E, F, and G, and straps H I, and provided with an adjustable transverse bar, J, fixable by clamp-screw and nut K L, having studs M, for use in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
