TAILORS' CONFORMATING MEASURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 422,067, dated February 25, 1890.
Application filed March 1889. Serial No. 305,408. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MATTHEW BERNHEIM, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Fitting Garments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to devices for fitting garments to the human form, and has for its object to obtain perfect-fitting garments with case and precision.
Itisconcededthatmisfitsandthe consequent loss of thousands of dollars annually by tailors, as well as loss of time and much veXation and annoyance to their customers, are caused eitherby wrong measures orimperfect adaptation of the garment to the peculiar form of the customer due to a want of determinate knowledge by the tailor of such peculiarity of form, as wellas to carelessness or neglect in trying on garments before their final completion.
The object of my invention is to provide a device by which the dimensions and peculiarities of form of the person to be fitted may be determined and measured; and it consists in an improved apparatus, as hereinafter described and claimed, whereby the exactmeasurements may be readily secured and be positively retained so long as required to enable the tailor to carefully and correctly fit the garment in the absence of the customer with even greater facility and ease than upon his own person and with the assurance that there will be no misfit.
In the accompanying drawing, the figure is a side elevation of my improved oonformator,
illustrating its application to a man for the purpose of obtaining accurately the several outlines and measurements of his figure.
This device is constructed of a longitudinally-adj ustable vertical standard 1), secured in a suitable base 17, and having at its upper end a transverse bar q fixed thereto. At one end of this transverse bar a revolving socket is fitted and secured bya set screw q to prevent it from turning, and to this socket is socured a second upright standard XV, formed in three telescoping sections r r r, the sections r 0' being fitted with set-screws s s, by which the inserted sections may be fixed when adjusted in length. Each section of this upright N is provided with one or more lateral extended sockets '6, into which is fitted a horizontal rod t, which admits of longitudinal adjustment in the socket, and is made fast, when adjusted, by means of a set-screw. Two sets of flat flexible strips of metal 1) o, sufficien tly pliable to admit of being readily bent, yet stiif enough to retain their form unless forcibly acted upon, are riveted to the free end of each horizontal rod t at right angles to each other. The vertical strips '1) 4) overlap each other and are unit-ed by aloose clasp 12 which permits their free longitudinal movement one upon the other, but confines them laterally. The horizontal strips or bands 1; o" are provided each with an extension-strip o hinged thereto and adapted to be carried around the front of the person, said extension-strips being made to overlap in front when used in measuring. Four sets of these horizontal strips or bands are pro vided, as shown in the figure, the first designed to extend opposite the collar-bone, the second under the arms, the third at about the small of the back, and. the fourth just above the seat of the person to be fitted. The upright W is carried high enough to admit of use in determining the height of the person to be fitted.
Another detached strip U5 is provided to be applied to the side of the person. It is of such length and shape, as shown in the drawing, as that when its upper end is placed at the neck-band it may be laid along the shoulder to the arm, thence bending around the arm on the back side thereof to the middle of the armpit, be extended down the center of the side to the leg. This auxiliary strip 'may be secured to the horizontal strips at its intersection therewith by means of simple clasps. The hinged extension-pieces o of the transverse bands 11 and the vertical measuringrod are severally marked each with a measuringscale.
In the use and operation of my improved apparatus, constructed. as described, the appropriate measurements of the person to be fitted are first taken by applying the conformator to his body. Forthis purpose the base 19 of the instrumentis placed between his feet,
so as to bring the upper adjustable measuringrcd W at his back, as shown in the drawing. 5 The basal standard is then adjusted so as to bring the cross-bar q up snugly between his legs to the extreme height. The upright measuring-rod is then adjusted, by means of its several telescoping sections 4' r r, so as to bring its upper end to the level of the top of the mans head to ascertain his full height, and the several transverse bands v o are brought by an adjustment of the rod carrying each to the level, respectively, of the collar-bone, the small of the back, and of the greatest projection below the hips, and the three lower bands, With their extensions, are made to encircle the body each at its appropriate level.
The deflection of the back from a vertical line at each point is determined by the distance of the connected longitudinal strips r v on the back from the upright rods 0' r.
When the device is carefully fitted to the person, its joints and movable parts are all made fast, so as to retain their position so long as may be desired in cutting out the garments to be made from its measurements.
I claim as my invent-ion The combination, in a conformator or measurin g device, of the adjustable vertical standard, the adjustable transverse rod at its upper end, the revolving socket at one end of the transverse rod, the sectional telescoping upright, adjustable in said socket, the lateral adjustable arms projecting from the several lengths of said upright, and the flexible bands attached to said arms, all substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
