This invention relates to hand hooks for pull rods or the like, employed in connection With oil well apparatus and is particularly adapted for use in connecting the pull rod with a band wheel eccentric.
These hooks and their equivalents are relatively heavy and in placing them in operative position numerous accidents to operators have been met with. 7
An object of the present invention is to provide a hand hook of the type referred to of such construction as to practically eliminate accidents to operators in applying the hook in the desired operative position.
Another object is to provide a hand hook having a body portion through which a portion of the pull rod extends and in which one extremity of the pull rod is secured whereby only the hook portion of the device need be connected while the band wheel is in operation.
A further object is to provide a device of the character referred to wherein the hook portion is pivotally mounted in the body portion and a hand grip is arranged on the hook portion to facilitate the handling thereof.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates as a whole the body portion of the device. This body portion is formed of a pair of complementary members'll and 12 and each member is provided'onopposite forcing and securing portions 13. These the rod is firmly sides with relatively wide longitudinal rein the -mem'bers l1 and 12 are provided withlongitudinal substantially semi-annular grooves 16 and these inner faces are secured together whereby the grooves'16 will form'a' substantially annular opening. The extremities 19 are preferably rounded and provided with subtantially central transverse openings .21; q The numeral 22 designates the hook portionofthe device provided with a bill 23 at" one extremity and a relatively wide portion 24 at its opposite extremity, the latterrpor-- tion-being provided with a central: transverse opening 25 of substantially the same diameter as the openings 21. A shaft or pin 26 is secured in the opening 25by means of the smallpin' 27 or the like, extending through the'shaftand the pOrtionQL. The ends of. this shaftare adapteditobe received in the openi-hgsQl, and the portion 24: extends' into the opening 20 whereby the hook'portion'of the device -will'be pivotally connected to the L body portionwhen the complementary members are secured together.- Y 4 I Ahan-dgrip QS-preferably formed integral with the hook portion is arranged on the upper side thereof to facilitate handling of the device.
The longitudinal opening in'the bodyportion is adapted to snugly receive a pull rod 29 or the like, and theinner extremity of the pull rod is burred or otherwise suitably flat- V tened substantially as shown at 30, whereby held by the body portion when the complementary members are secured together. i
The bill 23 of the hook is adapted to en.- gage a clevis 31 connected to a band wheel eccentric (not shown).
The operation of the device is believed to be apparent. When it is desired to connect the pull rod to the band wheel eccentric, the end of the rod is firmly secured in the body portion of the device as described. The -operator will then hold the body portion in one hand, grasp the hand grip 28 with the other hand and when the band wheel brings the clevis 81 into position he engages the bill of the hook in the clevis ,thus completing the connection with a minimumof danger to his hands. The pivotal connection between the hook and body portion permits much freedom of movement of the hook by the operator in making the connection to th'e'clevis.
The device is simple, may be economically constructed and quickly assembled, and securely connects the pull rod and bandwheel eccentric when in operative'pos'iti'on. It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and describ'ecl is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and thativarious changes in the shape;
size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or thescope of the subjoined claim. a
