The principal object of the invention is the provision of devices which operate automatically and prevent unauthorized entry into the vault by simultaneously locking the door to the door frame and locking the main bolt work'against normal release, and by discharging a gas bomb or air contaminating device within the vault.
Another important object of the invention is the provision of ay device lof the character described which is simple of construction, and which will positively remain in adjusted position after assembly and which will be certain to operate under predetermined 20 emergency conditions.

To illustrate -my invention I have shown a vault door 11 having a main locking bolt mechanism 12 mounted thereon. Main door locking bolts 13, an auxiliary locking means 14 for locking they main bolt mechanism under certain circumstances, and an air contaminating device or gas bombl 15, are also mounted in convenient arrangement upon the vault door. While elements of the vault protecting means embodying the present invention are shown and described as applied to the door 11 the devices are equally applicable to a vault wall and my invention is not limited to devices secured upon a door. rllhe door 11 has a flange 16 extending laterally therefrom and spaced inwardly of its ledges and through which the main bolts 17 are mounted. The bolts 17 slide through the iange 16 and lock the door by projecting beyond the edge of the door and into or behind the door frame. The bolts 17 are interconnected by the usual operating bars 21 and arranged for conjoint movement; only one of the bars 21 being shown on the drawing. The bolt work is operated by a manually operable crank 18 which engages a pin 19 of the bolt work, and the vault or safe is locked by any usual combination or mainflocking mechanism 22 wliicli;'wlien in locking condition, obstructs unlocking movement ot a rod or bar 23 carried by a bar 21.
The auxiliary locking bolts 13 and bolt locking means 14 are assembled together in pairs and eachassembly is mounted in a bracket 21- conveniently fastened or secured to the doo-r 11 by one or more bolts or screws 25V extending through the bracket and engag ing the door". A cylinder 26 threaded at both ends is mounted in an aperture through. the bracket. The-cylinder at one end has threaded engagement with thev iiange 16 of the door andis secured to the iange by meansl of a locking nut 27 which'engages the flange and a protruding portion ot the cylinder. A locking bolt 28 against the inner end of which bears spring 29 is slidingly arranged in the cylinder 26. The spring 29 is housed in a cap 31 which has threaded engagement with the cylinder 26 at A pin 33 is mounted through a portion ot' the bracket 24 and is Varranged to` engage a groove 34 in the bolt 28V to hold the bolt in Vthe normal retracted position illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The pin 33 is urged into the slot 34 by a spring 35 mounted concentrically thereon, and engaging at-opposed ends a screw plug mounted in the bracket 24 and the pin 33 respectively. A ring 36 may be suitably secured to the pin 33 to facilitate the attachment of a flexible connector or other means for withdrawing the pin from engagement in the groove 34 of bolt 28.
The locking means 14 includes an arm 37 pivotally mounted on a pin 38 mounted in the bracket 24. The arm is held in the normal position shown in Fig. 4 by means of a fork 39 secured thereto and arranged to engage the head 41 of a pin 42 which extends through a slot 43 formed in the c 7linder 26k and which is carried by the bolt 23. A shoulder plate 44 is secured to the bar 21 ofthe main locking bolt mechanism by one or more pins or bolts 45 and a spring 46 is provided to pull down the arm 37 when released from the head 41 of the pin 42 into the path of unlocking movement of the shoulder plate 44, and so to lock the main locking bolt mechanism.
While any suitable air contaminating device or devices may be provided l have shown a gas bomb mechanism which includes a bracket 47 attached to the door 11 by means of screws 48 and arranged to support a spring-actuated firing pin 49 housed in a portion 51 of the bracket 47. Any suitable spring means may be provided for driving the firing pin and the upper end 52 of the firing pin projects through thehousing 51 substantiallyas shown. A ring 53 may be attached thereto to facilitate the attachment of a flexible connector 54. The bomb receptacle includes a cup 55 arranged for detachable connection with the bracket 47 and.
formed to contain a bomb 56 for generating and discharging gas through a plurality of openings 57 in the cup 55 when a button 58 carried by the bomb is driven downwardljl by the firing pin 49. n
The ends 62 of cords 61 are secured tothe vault door said cords passing over'pulleys 63 are arranged variously over and around the door, the combination lock, and along the bolt bar 23. Y Their opposite ends are secured to one or the other ring 36 and the cords are adapted to release the auxiliaryv locking bolts 28 upon the occurrence of any circumstance which disturbsr their position. Springs 64 connected to pins 65 and to the connectors 61 and springs 67 furnish a desired tension in the cords. A detailed descripticn of the arrangement of the cords is unnecessary to a proper understanding. of the present invention and is A therefore omitted.
The gas bomb assembly in the present instance is arranged adjacent the bottom of the door and is connected tothe auxiliary locking bolt device which is arranged adjacent the top of the door. The connector 54 is secured at one end to the firing pin ring 53, passes through a bracket 68 and guide pins 69 and at its free end is provided with a substantially spherical device or ball 71.
A pocket 72 is formed in a side of the arm 37 and preferably adjacent the pin 38 and in which the ball 71 may be partially seated as shown in Fig. 6. A similar pocket may be formed in the opposite side of the arm 37 if desired to provide either a left or right hand locking device. The pocket 72 is not formed deep enough to engage and support the ball 71, and means are lprovided for holding the ball in the pocket. In the present instance a substantially T-shaped member 73 attached to the bracket 24 by means of a plurality of screws or like devices 74, is provided to hold the ball in engagement in the pocket when the arm 37 has normal engagement with the lock bolt 23. The head 75 of the T-shaped member is formed so that it Willengage the ball as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 6 substantially centrally and opposite the pocket. Upon release and downward motion of the lever-37 the ball is dropped out of engagement with the head 7 5 and the ball is released from engagement in the pocket.
It will be apparent that when any of the cords or connectors 61 are disturbed as by the punching of the combination lock, or the burning of the door, the springs 64 will be released and the pin 33 willbe pulled down and allow the spring 29 to project the bolt 28. The movement of the bolt 28 to locked position disengages the pin 42 from the fork 39 which'permits the arm 37 to drop under the tension of the spring 46 into the path of the shoulder plate and to effectively lock the vmain bolt work. The movement of the arm 37 disengages the ball 71 from its seat and releases the firing pin ofthe bomb assembly. The door is therefore not only locked by the main bolt, but by the auxiliary locking bolts 13 and the vault is further protected by the contamination of the atmosphere within the vault.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be` apparent that various changes may be made in the form, constructionA andarrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. A holding and releasing means for gas bombs and like devices, comprising a flexible connector attached to the firing pin of a gas bomb, a pivoted arm normally held in a pre'-r determined position yand adapted to move upon releasing from the normal position, andV means for supporting said flexible connector in engagement With said arm for preventing operation of the tiring pin, said connection beingreleased by movement of the arm from normal position.
2. A holding and releasing means for gas bombs, and like devices, comprising a flexible connector attached to the iring pin of a gas bomb, a pivoted arm normally held in a predetermined position and adapted to move upon releasing from the normal position, and means connecting said flexible connector to said arm for preventing operation of the {iring pin, said means including a spherical member secured to the flexible connector and having interlocking engagement With said pivoted arm While said arm is in normal position.
3. A vault protecting device, comprising a locking bolt, an arm provided with a pocket and pivoted adjacent said locking bolt and supported in a normal position by said locking bolt, said arm being adapted to move from normal position upon disturbance of the locking bolt, a gas bomb, a spring actuated firing pin` for discharging the gas bomb, means attached to the spring actuated iiring pin and adapted to engage the pocket in said arm and to be supported therein when the arm is in normal position to prevent operationo the spring actuated firing pin While said arm is in said normal position.
