UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT E. BROWN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN LATHE-DOGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,762, dated July 11, 1876; application filed May 11, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT E. BRCWN,
of New York, in the State of New York, have.
invented a new and useful Lathe Dog or Driver, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in the arrangement of a suitable plate to be attached to the faceplate of a lathe, and provided with grooves or ways, in which two jaws are made to work, capable of being moved together or farther apart by means of a right and left handed screw, held in position by a suitable projection or lug attached near the middle of said grooves or ways for the purpose or clamping or straddling the head of a bolt placed between the centers of a lathe, so as to carry the same around with the lathe to enable the turning off of the bolt.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure I represents a top view of my improved lathe dog or driver, embodying my invention. Fig. II is a section of the same.
A is a plate of any desired shape, provided with an elongated hole, .a, through which a bolt passes to fasten the same to the faceplate B. (Shown in dotted lines.) This plate A is grooved at n, in which jaws D are fitted,
projecting some distance over the edge of the plate. Near the middle of the ways or grooved part a a lug, m, is arranged, in which a right and left handed screw, 0, is held, passing through the jaws D, whereby the same can be moved nearer together or farther apart.
The plate A is attached to the face-plate of the lathe, so that the center-point comes between the jaws. The bolt or other article to be turned is placed between the center-points, so that the jaws D will clamp or straddle the head or any flat part of the same, and will thus cause the bolt to turn with the faceplate.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A plate, A, provided with ways a, central lug m, and right and left handed screw 0, in
combination with jaws I), when said plate A is arranged to be attached to the face-plate outside of the center, and thejaws to project toward the center-pin, and project on each side of the same, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
