UNITED STATES PATENT OFEIoE.
JAMES WEIGHT AND JACOB 0. SMITH, JR., OF JACKSON, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-PICKERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,752. dated July 11, 1876 application filed May 1, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES WRIGHT and JACOB 0. SMITH, Jr., ot J ackson, in the county of Madison and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ootton-0leaner; and we do hereby declare person may open and close the same at will..
In this topis thefeed-opening, through which the cotton is admitted into the conical receiver formed of the bottom wire screen or grating D, and top perforated sheet-iron or wire screen E. Within the receiver D E is the revolving shaft P, with curved heaters It R attached thereto, said heaters being graduated both in length and distances apart, as shown; F F are the stationary teethwithin said receiver. O is the dust-fan and pipe. G Gare dust-passages from the top connecting with the fan.
The delivery end of the machine contains at the top rotating bea-tcrs I, inclosed in a sheet-iron case, of which J is the upper half and K the lower half, the latter also forming the upper half of the case for the deliverybeaters L in the bottom of the machine at the discharge end. In the case K is an opening, S, through which the cotton passes from the heaters 1 to the heaters L at the bottom. M is an elevated and curved discharge-pipe with an opening, N, near the bottom, forming a separator, and under the same is a receiver, 0. The operation of this machine is substantially the same as described in the former patent above referred to, with the following improvements, in addition to the hinged top, as already mentioned, viz: The dust-passages G, over and around the top, by means of which the dust that is driven up by the action of the beaters and cotton is forced through the openings in top,,and is drawn ofl' through slots in the frame'that connects with the dustfan, the partition adividing the delivery-beaters L from the dust-flan, in connection with the case K, having opening S, by which arrangement the cotton is cleaned in the upper story or apartment, and then driven down to the lower, free of dust, where it comes in contact with the delivery-heaters and is driven up the pipe M and discharged. The discharge-pipe M has a double curve, and is elevated, as shown, which prevents the escape of rock or any heavy substance with the cotton, such substances, together with gravel, sand, 850., passing through the separating-opening N. The sand, &c., passing through the screen E is caught in the drum 0, thus preventing the choking of the dust-pipe.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with the fan and delivery heaters, the partition a, and the case K, having opening S, as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The top B and frame A, hinged as described, in combination with the fan and delivery-heaters, partition to, case K, having opening S, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we afix our signaturesin presence of two witnesses.
