Description

" Patented 'Mar. 24, 1931 I I HARVEY I-IUIBBELL, .13., or BRIDGEPQRT;coimnc'r cu'r' ronmnetnmenrmenr f it Application filed October 27,1927. Serial No. 229,037.
This invention relates to a portable night light and has for an object to provide a light of this character which may be placed in any desirablepo'sition, such as on a table, under a table, a bed or other piece of furniture to give suflicie ntillumination so that objects on thefioor or lower part of the room are visible and a person; will not stumbleover them, but Withoutbrightly illuminating the entire 1 room. I o
, Itis also an object ofthe invention to provide an improved portable control means for the light. h h
It is a still further object of the invention to provide an improved construction of a light which is easily portable, is simple and attractive, and in which there is a guard and reflector for the lamp to protect the lamp against injury should some one step on it. With "the foregoing and other jobjects in View, Iii ave de vised'the construction'illustrated inthe accompanying drawing forming part of this specification. In this draw- 1H0, h .0 v 1 is a vieiv showing the use of the light under a table or other piece of furniture.
i Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the light proper showing the attachment plug cap and the portable control switch in'elevatiom'the 3o section'being substantially on line 2 2 of Fig.3 is a transverse section substantially on line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and V j Fig.,4 is a'bottom plan view of the light broper.'
As'illust rate'd this improved portable night light comprises a base IOpreferably of'metal having'a strengthening-rib or flange "11 to rest on the floor or other support,}and-providing a'cjhamber, for. lead Wires anda'greater I portion of the mount for the lamp 12. This lamp mount comprises a block or body l3 of insulatingmaterial mounted in an opening in the top of the base and secured therein The body has a recess 15. extending downwardly from its top Wall in which are mounted the'lamp contacts of anysuitable type, usually a 'screw shell contact 16 to engage and receive .the'threaded outer contact 17 of the i by. any suitable means, such as screws 14.
lamp and the spring 'contact l8 tojengagfe the central'lamp contact. The screw shell con tact rests on the bottom of thefrecess and is engaged by a laterally extending strap 19 carrying a binding' post screw 20. The centralspring contact'18 issecured by'a rivet 21 ontop of aninsulating Washer22 resting on topfof'the'strap 19. Y This rivet extends through the bottom'wall of the recess and a strap 23-carryingfa binding post screvv'24. in) It will," therefore, be seen this'rive'tQl secures both lamp contacts [and their: connecting straps and bindingiscrewsto the body, and it also; forms an electrical "connectionxfrom the strap 23 to the spring contact'18. 1 The bindc5 ing'screws and'stra'ps l9andi23 are prefer-u ably mounted in recesses 41' onthe loWerside of'the body member 1350 thatithey'are-protectedbut at the same time are easily .acces sible. In the opposite; sidewalls of the base are mounted insulating. bushings 25 for pas sage .oftlie lead wire cords26 an d 27.
