' UNDERCUTTER 7 Filed Oct. 16, 1929 \v Z I g IF" I I WI! (1 1m J j l Z0 14 I. K q 16- zzlizzz'llaafiez' Z5 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 17, 1931 UNITED STATES EMIL LA'UBER, F PORTLAND, OREGON UnDEnoU'rTER Application filed October 16, 1929.. Serial No. 400,027.
This invention relates to an improvement in under-cut saw supporters and has as one of its objects to provide an under-cut saw supporter which will be lighter in weight than the ordinary device of this type and capable of being more readily driven into a log to be cut and adjusted to support the cutting saw.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this class so constructed that a stronger and better leverage may be ob tained in the operation of the saw, and the saw blade support adjusted with respect to the log with greater case than is ordinarily possible in devices of this class.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the under-cutter saw support embodying the invention, the figure illustrating a part of a log, in broken lines.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the device.
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a detail view in side elevation illustrating the saw supporting roller.
The device embodying the invention comprises a stock indicated in general by the numeral 1 and provided at one end with a flattened blade portion 2 adapting this end to be driven into the log to be cut by striking blows with a sledge hammer against the opposite end of the stock, and the stock is formed, intermediate its ends, with hearing bosses 3 projecting from its opposite sides, the stock and its bosses being formed with an axial bore 4 in which is mounted, for rotative adjustment, the laterally turned upper end 5 of an arm 6 which extends downwardly from the said end portion 5 and upon which the saw supporting roller is mounted as will presently be described. The portion 5. of
the arm 6 is threaded at its free end portion as indicated by the numeral 7, and a hand lever 8 is provided with a head 9 having a threaded opening 10 adapting the head to be threaded onto the said portion 5 so as to clamp the portion 5 in place, the portion 5 of the arm-6 being provided with a cylindrical portion 11 having diametrically oppositely located lugs o 12 formed upon its periphery to engage in G0 diametrically opposite ones of a series of notches 13 formed in the end of oneof the bosses 3, it being understood that the adjustment of the arm 6 maybe effected by rotating the hand lever 8 to permit shifting of the portion 5 of the said arm 6 and disengagement of the lugs 12 from the notches 13, and when the arm hasbeen swung to the desired angle of inclination, the arm andits portion 7 5 are again shifted'so as to effect engage- '16 ment of the lugs 12 in diametrically opposite ones of the notches opposite which they are located, whereupon the lever 8 maybe again rotated so as to draw the member 5 through the bore 4 to effect engagement of the lugs ie in the said notches.
The saw supporting and guiding means comprises ahead 14 which is fitted slidably upon the arm 6 and which arm is rectangular in cross section so as to prevent rotation to of the said head, and the head is held at various positions of adjustment upon the arm by means of a set'screw 15 provided with a finger lever 15 whereby it may be rotated, the arm being reduced and threaded at its outer end as at 16, and a nut 17 being fitted onto this end of the arm so as to prevent accidental slipping of the head 14 from engagement with the arm if the set screw 15 36COH16S loosened while the tool is being, carried from place to place. The head 14 is provided with a reduced portion 18 at its end opposite its end in which the set screw 15 is threaded, and a bronze bushing) 19 is fitted to this portion, and the saw lade supporting roller 20 is rotatably fitted upon the bushing, a retaining disk 21 being fitted onto a further reduced portion 22 of the head 14, and confining the roller in lace upon the bushing 19, a pin 23. being iitted diametrically through the reduced portoin 22 and retaining the disk 21 in place. As illustrated in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawing, the roller 20 is provided with a plurality of circumferential grooves 24, which are of a width to accommodate the back of the saw blade to be supported by the roller.
From the foregoing description of the in vention it will be seen that the roller support may be adjusted vertically upon the arm 6,
to any desired elevation, and likewisethearm may be adjusted to assume various angles of inclination with respect to the stock 1.
What I claim is 1. In a device of the class described, a stock having a fiat sided piercing end tobe driven into alog'to be out, an arm supported at its upper end upon the stock forangular adjustment with respect to the stock, means for holding the arm in its positions of adjustment, a head Vertically adj-ustably mounted upon the said arm, means for holding the head in its positions of adjustment, and a saw supporting roller rotatably mounted upon the said head.
2. A device oi the class described, com-- prising a stock having a piercing end and provided inwardly of said end with bosses extending from opposite sides of the stock, an arm having a laterally extending end portion rotatably fitted through the stock and the bosses and having its free end threaded, a," handle member having a. head provided with a threaded opening fitted to the said end of the said portion to bear against the end of one of th-ebosses, the end of the other boss being provided with an annular series of notches extending about theopening therein, the said extension of the arm having a pair of diametrically opposite lugs engageable within diametrically opposite ones of the notches, whereby the arm may be adjusted to assume various angular positions with respect to the stock, and a; saw blade suipporting and guiding roller longitudinally adj-ustable upon the arm; f
In testimony whereof I afix my signature.
