This invention relates to traveling blocks and more particularly to traveling blocks eshandling the tubing, casing, etc, and for raismg and lowering the said tubing, casing, etc. in connection with the above stated work.
Among the objects of the present invention are, to provide a simple and eificient block of the character specified embodying-means for resiliently supporting the sectional tubing or .casing especially during the operation of connecting and disconnecting the sections; a construction embodying guard means for the sheaves and the ropes while passing over the sheaves to prevent accidental contact therewith means for providing ei'licient lubrication for the sheaves; a construction including a plurality of sheaves having a common shaft and means whereby the common shaft may be readily removed from the block structure and anew one or a diiferent type of shaft inserted without disassembling the block; and a construction embodying means enabling the clevis carrier and clevis structure to be swung free of the block body in order to permit the body to rest upon its base during the operation of stringing the line, i. e., passing the ropes or cables over the sheaves.
In the accompanying drawing, which'illustrates an application of my invention Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a traveling block constructed in accordance with my invention and Figure 2, is a part sertional view and a part elevational view of the block, the elevation being at right angles to the view of Figure 1.
As illustrated and as preferred the traveling block comprises two similar side members 2-2; these members constitute the body or frame of the block in which a plurality of sheaves 3 are mounted. Each Serial No. 55,506.
side member is formed with an opening 4; through which a shaft 5 for the sheaves 3 extends; and each side member is further provided with openings 6 and 7 designed to receive tie-bolts or members 8 and 9 respectively. Shaft 5 has a nut 10 on each end and the respective ends of tie-bolts 8 and 9 are provided with nuts 11 and 12. It will. be seen that the two side members are connected by the shaft 5 and its nuts and by the tiebolts or members 8 and 9 and the nuts mounted thereon.
The openings 4 through which the ends of the shaft 5 project, are sufliciently large to permit of the shaft being passed therethrough and for the purpose of maintaining the shaft in position in the frame, I provide filler rings 13 and washers 14 at each end of the shaft.
The filler rings are of the same diameter as the roller bearing cages 15, but the diameters of the washers 14 are greater than the filler rings. The washers 14 are disposed between the filler rings and the nuts 10 and bear against the side frame members 2.
By means of this construction I am enabled to insert and remove the shaft 5 without removing the side members 2 or other parts of the block structure; further, with this construction a sheave and its hearing may be removed and inserted without disturbing the said side members.
The construction illustrated is particularly adapted for lubrication. As illustrated, I provide horizontally extending passages 16 and radially extending passages 17 leading to the bearings 15 for the respective sheaves 3. It should-be unt erstood that in the block illustrated there are four sheaves and that passages similar to 16 and 17 are provided for the two sheaves not clearly shown. LIP bricant is forced into the passages 16 through cap controlled openings 18 located at the ends of the shaft 5.
The frame comprising the two side members 22 has a fiat base portion formed by the flat bottom faces 19 on each of the said side members. This base enables the frame or block body to be supported in an upright position after the clevis carrier and clevis structure are swung free of the said lower and their bearings.
Pivotally connected tothe upper tie-bolt8 is a block supporting member 21, designed to be connected with a rope or cable, not shown. Member 21 is formed with end-members 22 encircling the tie-bolt and these ends together with members 23 constitute spacing means on the tie-bolt 8 for the plates 20.
For the purpose of covering the spaces between the upper portions of the side plates 22 adjacent the sheaves, in order to prevent accidental access to the sheaves and the ropes or cables thereon I provide two threesided guard members 24:. These members are secured to the side frame members by any suitable means, such as bolts 25 passed through lugs 26; these guards are provided with slot openings 27 through which the ropes or cables are designed'to pass. As shown, each guard member comprises side portions a having straightvedges b for engagement with a side member and a continuous curved and slotted portion 0. f
Suspended within the frame, near its base portion and on the tie-bolt 9, is a clevis car-' rier structure 30. The carrier is provided with spring receiving pockets 31 extending vertically thereof. Each pocket has a lower interior shoulder 32- and an upper shoulder 33. The carrier is adapted to be swung on the bolt 9 in such a manner that it will be free of the base portion of the block frame, thereby permitting the block to stand upright on its base portion when it is desired to string thezline, or for other purposes. The clevis carrier is designed to carry aclevis device including in the structure illustrated, two ver tic-ally extending bolts 34 hav ng their lower ends passed through a cross member 85. The
' bolt's extend downwardly through the said pockets 31 of the carrier and through the ends'of the cross-member, the lower ends of the bolts being threaded to receive nuts 36 and 37; Disposed within each pocket and surrounding the bolt 34 therein is a compression spring 38. Spring 38 is maintained in posit-on between the shoulder 32 and a cap 39 carried on the upper ends of the bolts; the, function of the springs is to resilientlv support the clevis and in turn the tubing, etc that in operation, is suspended therefrom. l he downward movement of the clevis relat-lvely to its carrier arrested by reason of the cap. 39 coming into engagement with the shoulder 33. A traveling block having a sheave frame, said frame having a supporting base portion, a clevis carrier, a pin on said frame on which "he carrier is pivoted, said pin being at an cevation to enable the carrier to be swung above the plane of said base portion so that the frame may stand on the latter, and resiliently mounted clevis means on the carrier lo *ated below the said base portion in the supporting position of the clevis, said'carrier and-clevis means constituting a unit.

In a traveling block, a frameincluding spaced-a )art side members, a plurality of sheaves mounted in the frame, and a pair of three-sided guards for the sheaves, each guard being secured to a side member and formed with flat side portions having straight edges for engagement with a side member of the frame, and an outer continuous, curved and slotted portion, lateral lugs on the side members embraced by the three sides of the guards, and bolts for securing the respective guards to the lugs, said slots continuing through the upper edge of the respective guards. j r

A traveling block having a sheave frame provided with a base on which it is adapted to rest, a clevis carrier, means pivoting said carrier to the frame at such an elevation to enable the carrier to be swungabove said base to permit the frame torest thereon, the pivotal mounting of the clevis carrier enabling the latter to rest on the same support as the frame, whereby thefra'me and carrier coact in the positioning of the fran le when it rests on its base. 7
