According to the'present inventiona printing cylinder is split longitudinally or lengthwiseto form at least two parts capable of beingassembled with the ends of one or'more than one impression or design plate between the partsso as to forma rigid unit as a whole. The printing cylinder may carry one or more than'one plate of which either plate or both plates where there are two, may be utilized for printing purposes. Where only one plate is used the peripheral surface of the other cylinder segment may form a surface flush with that of the plate onthe other cylinder segment. The two parts ofthe cylinder hereinaftcr referred to-as the cylinder segments are preferably supported by a rectangular shaft having ends which are reduced to a circular or cylindrical form soas to form jour nals or bearing portions for the said shaft.

Referring to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing, 1 and 2 are the cylinder segments and 3 is a shaft which at the particular plane of section shown in Figures 1 and 2 is of rectangular section, 4 is the peripheral surface of one cylinder se ment and 5 the peripheral surface of the other cylinder segment, 1 and 5 are design or impression plates one on each cylinder segment. The cylinder segments 1 and 2 are provided with flat or plane faces (3, 7, 8 and 9, the faces 6 and 7 being ap proximately in one and the same plane and the faces 8 and 9 being also approximately in one and the same plane or in parallel planes. The faces 6, 7, 8 and 9 are recess-ed as at 10, 11, 12 and 13 and adapted to carry bars let, 15, 16 and 17, the bars 14 and 16 being so disposed as to co-operate when assembling the cylinder segments and the bars and 17 being adapted to co-operate also when assembling the cylinder segments. In order to provide for a suitable bearing surface for the bars 1%, 15, 1.6 and 17 the respective recesses are formed by inserted mild steel pieces 18, each of which is shaped as shown more particularly in detail in Figure 7. It will be seen from Figure 7 that the outer surface of each recess is of circular form as shown at 19, each such surface having an inwardly extending peaked portion 20 the use of which counteracts any tendency of a rockable bar to rise out of its rockable position. Such a construction also keeps the rockable bars in their recesses whilst the sheets are being assembled. The bars 14, 15, 1G and 17 areall of the same construction and a description of one bar is considered sufficient, from which description the construction of all the bars may be readily understood. Each bar, say the bar 1 all of which are the same, longitudinally and in cross section comprises an outer surface of suitable curved form as shown at 21 and an approximately flat portion 22 and a suitable curved portion 23. Formed integral with each bar is a number of hooks 24 having under-cut portions which are adapted to engage a wire or rod 26 retained in position one on each end of the metallic design or impression plate t. Each end of a design or impression plate, one end of which is shown in Figure 8, is recessed or gripped as shown at 27 and the outwardly extending fingers are bent round on to the surface of the sheet to form loops 28. The loops 28 through which the wires or rods 26 pass may be soldered to the surface of the metallic sheet or otherwise rigidly secured thereto. To accommodate these loops or to allow of the ne *cssary clearance the insert parts 18 are provided with further recesses 29 so that the looped portions have free play when entered and subsequently positioned in the recesses in the inserts 18. The inserts 18 may be secured to the respective cylinder segments by bolts, studs, screws or other suitable means.
The shaft 3 is provided with reduced circular or cylindrical ends 30, 31, 32, 33 which form journals or bearings for the shaft. The axis of the cylindrical portion of the shaft is shown at .3 1 and the axis of the rectangular portion of the shaft is shown at 35 in Figure 3. The ends of each cylinder segment are reduced to form a truncated conical portion 36 adapted to receive a retaining ring 37 one of which is held in position against each face 38 formed by the assembled cylinder segments by means of set screws or equivalent 39. A retaining ring such as 37 is disposed at each end of the cylinder segments such rings acting to retain the cylinder segn'ients in the assembled position on the rectangular shaft 3. The cylinder segment 2 as will be seen more particulary from Figure 5 is retained in position against the shaft by studs 40 the upper ends of which are reduced as at 41 so as to engage holes 12 provided in a flat face 43 formed on the cylinder segment 1. 14 are the bolt heads which retain the cylinder segment 2 against the face 45 of the shaft 3. The said cylinder segment 2 is also keyed as at 16, 17 to the sides 48, 19 of the shaft 3 and in order to reduce the weight of the cylinder segments each segment may be recessed as at and 51.
The rings 37 are of concave form on their peripheral surface so as to prevent the ink spreading.
When assembling the cylinder segments in position, the segment 2 is placed on a suitable fiat surface and the shaft 3 is then dropped into or placed in position. The shaft is then secured to the segments 2 by the bolts 40, and the shaft and cylinder segment 2 slipped into the usual U-shaped rockable bearings. Before or after turning the usual U-shaped bearings to their vertical position the cylinder segment 1 is placed in position on top of the cylinder segment 2. It should be clearly understood however, that the hook bars 14, 15, 16 and 17, together with the impression or design plates or sheets are in position between the cylinder segments, before superimposing the cylinder segments. When the cylinder segments have been superimposed the cylinder is then rotated against an impression cylinder or other suitable cylinder or roller which forces the rockable bars into the position shown in Fig ure 2, thus, not only completely assembling the sheets 4: 5 in their proper relative position but also tensioning the said sheets at the same time. The rings 37 are then placed in position and secured by the set screws 39. The cylinder thus assembled then forms a rigid unit with a metallic design or impression plate or plates under tension. In a longitudinally split printing cylinder, a rectangular shaft, reduced circular ends thereon having a common axis displaced relatively to the axis of the rectangular shaft, two cylinder segments supported on the said shaft, design plates overlying the peripheral surface of the cylinder segments and having their ends extending inwardly of and bet-ween the said segments, means disposed between the segments to apply tension to the design plates when assembling the cylinder segments, and means to retain the parts in assembled position.

In a longitudinally split printing cylinder, a rectangular shaft, cylinder segments superimposed thereon, design plates overlying the peripheral surface of the cylinder segments and having gapped ends, wires rigidly secured to the said ends, means loosely engageable with the said wires and adapted to be rocked to apply tension to the design plates when assembling the cylinder segments, and means to retain the parts in assembled position.

In a longitudinally split printing cylinder, a rectangular shaft, two cylinder segments mounted thereon, design plates superimposed thereon and overlying the peripheral surface thereon, rockable means disposed between the cylinder segments and loosely engageable with design plates to apply tension thereto, and rings adapted to be rigidly secured to the ends of the cylinder segments so as to retain the parts in the as sembled position.
17. In a longitudinally split printing cylinder, a rectangular shaft, two cylinder segments supported thereon, design plates superimposed on the cylinder segments and having their ends extending inwardly of and between the said segments, rockable bars disposed between the segments, hooks on the said bars and loosely engageable with the ends of the design plates and adapted by butting contact to apply tension to the design plates when assembling the cylinder segments on the rectangular shaft, and means to retain the parts in the assembled position.
18. In a longitudinally split printing cylinder, a rectangular shaft, two cylinder ments supported thereon, design plates superimposed on the cylinder segments, pairs of bars interposed between the opposed ends of the design plates, undercut hooks on the said bars adapted to engage the design plates and rockable with the said bars by abutting contact of the hooks when assembling the cylinder segments to apply tension to the design plates, and means rigidly secured to the ends of the cylinder segments to retain the parts in their standard position.
19. In a longitudinally split printing cylinder, a rectangular shaft, a cylinder segment rigidly secured thereto, a second cylinder segment loosely supported thereon and on the rectangular shaft, a design sheet overlying each cylinder segment and having its ends extending inwardly of and between the said segments, tensioning means between the cylinder segments and adapted by butting contact to rock and tension the design plates, and means to secure the parts together as a rigid whole.
20. A printing cylinder split longitudinally to form at least two segments, a rectangular shaft on which the said segments are mounted. adjacent faces of the two segments being adapted to receive means loosely engageable with the end of a design plate assembled in position between the two cylinder segments.
21. A printing cylinder split longitudinally to form at least two cylinder segments, a rectangular shaft having one cylinder segment keyed to the sides thereof, the other cylinder segment being loosely superimposed on the shaft and adapted to receive pins securing the other cylinder segment to the rectangular shaft, the said pins acting as guides to facilitate superimposition of the one cylinder segment on the rectangular portion of the shaft and also on the other cylinder segment.
22. A printing cylinder split longitudinally to form at least two segments adapted to be superimposed on and carried by a rectangular shaft, one of said segments being removable from the shaft without displacement of the other cylinder segment, and design plate tensioning means operable between the cylinder segments.
23. A printing cylinder split longitudinally to form at least two cylinder segments, a design plate superimposed on and overlapping the ends of the said cylinder segment. the other cylinder segment being formed with a plane surface flush with the surface of the design plate on the associated segment, and a rectangular shaft adapted to en gage and support both cylinder segments.
24. A printing cylinder split longitudinally to form at least two segments, a design plate superimposed on and overlapping the ends of one of said segments, a plain metallic plate superimposed on and overla ping the other segment, a rectangular sha having the cylinder segments supported thereon, rockable means disposed between the cylinder segments to tension the design plate, and means to retain the parts in assembled position.
25. In a longitudinally split printing cylinder, two cylinder segments, each having a rectangular recess in its meeting face, a rectangular shaft adapted to engage in the recesses in the cylinder segments, design plates superimposed on the cylinder segments with their opposite ends disposed therebetween, means disposed between the meeting faces of the cylinder segments engageable by'opposite ends of the design plates and adapted to tension the latter during assembly of the cylinder segments, and rings embracing the cylinder segment ends and rigidly secured there to so as to retain the cylinder segments in assembled position.
