Description

March 10, 1931. j 5 LEE 1,795,611
BOOK GUIDE FOR PAPER CUTTERS Filed Dec. 26. 1929 Patented Mar. 10, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JAMES EDGAE LEE, OF GRAND HAVEN, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR T'O CHALLENGE MA CHINERY GO, OE GRAND HAVEN, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN BOOK GUIDE FOR PAPER CUTTERS Application filed December 26, 1929. Serial No. 416,669.
This invention relates to a book guide for paper cutters. It is usual after the leaves of a book have been bound together to cut the same at their edges, use being made of a heavy and usually power operated cutter for such a purpose. The bound leaves of the book, where bound together, are quite liable to shift out of proper position with reference to each other and it is an object and purpose of the present invention to provide devices which may be readily attached to the cutter against and under which the said bound edges of the leaves of the book may be passed so as to force the leaves together and hold them properly, after which a clamp is brought against the leaves of the book, followed by the operation of the cutting knife in front of the clamp to cut the opposite free edge portions of the leaves with a. smooth cut, whereby the outer edges of the leaves are even and in the same plane and have been held properly in the cutting so that no unevenness and raagedness of appearance occurs.
The devices which I have provided under which the edges of the leaves are inserted, are attached to an adjustable back guide of the cutter which may be moved to different positions on the supporting table of the cutter. .ln my invention said devices are of a novel design whereby they cannot be moved into a position such that they will at any time extend into the path of movement of the movable clamp or the knife of the cutter and be broken or otherwise injured on the downward movement of said clamp or knife.
A further object of the invention is to provide devices of this character which are very simple and easy to produce from the manufacturing standpoint, and which may be ad- 0 iustablv attached to the back guide of the butter for different thicknesses of books. The invention will be apparent upon an un dcrstanding thereof had from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, n which,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the book guide device of my invention.
Fi 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal section through the table, back guide, clamp and cutting knife of a cutter and having my in vention applied thereto, and
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section and plan looking' downwardly from the plane of line 33 of Fig. 2.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the different figures of the drawing. In the construction of the cutter a horizontal supporting'table 1 is mounted upon which the hook having a plurality of leaves 2, is adapted to be placed, having its bound edges abutting against forwardly extending spaced apart vertical fingers 3 whichextend from a back guide at mounted transversely of the table and in practice adjustable to different positions on the table.
This back guide 4 with the attached fingers is designed to lie back of a vertically mov able clamp 5 which may be moved up and down, in its upper position releasing the leaves of the book and in its lower position pressing thereagainst' at their upper side ,to clamp thesame snugly against the tablel. Directly in front of the clamp 5 a cutting knife 6 is mounted on a reciprocatory plunger 7 suitably guided so that on its downward movement it may performthe cutting operation.
The guides under which the bound edge portions of the leaves 2 are to be placed each comprises a vertical bar 8 the lower end of which is cut downwardly and rearwardly, as indlcated at 9. at anacute angle. From the lower end'and rear side of the bar 8 two spaced apart cars 10 extend, througl'i one of which a set screw 11 is threaded. The guides described are designed to be applied at the front edges of certain of the fingers 3,'the space between the innersides of the ears 10 being slightly greater than the thickness of a finger 3 so that the ears may pass one to each side of the finger and the device then be secured in place at any desired height on tightening the set screw 11. The edges of the leaves, when pushed back over the table, come into contact with the fingers 3 and engage against the inclines 9 of the book guide bars 8, thereby causing the edges of the leaves to be brought snugly together prior to the downward movement of the clamp 5.
It is evident that the bars 8 extending vertically can never pass underneath the clamp 5 and get into the path of movement thereof, said clamp never being elevated to a plane higher than the upper end of the bars 8. Accordingly, there is no danger of any of the guides interfering with the downward movement of the clamp and they will not be broken or otherwise injured due to an inadvertent positioning of 'the book guides 'too far forward. 'Complete insurance against the guides ever extending under the lower end of the clamp 5 in a position to be struck thereby is thus secured. Furthermore, the stopping of the book guides back of the clamp prevents their movement into the path of the knife of the cutter, the delicate edge of which would be greatly damaged by being brought forcibly against the back guides.
The construction of book leaf guide described, while a very simple one, is ,particu larly practical and cfiicient and has so proved in practice. The invention is defined in the appended claims and is to beconsidered comprehensive of all forms of structure coming within their scope.
I claim:
1. In a construction of the class described. a supporting bed, a back guide transverse thereof mounted above the bed and having a plurality of spaced apart forwardly extending vertical fingers, a vertically movable clamp located vabove the bed in front of said back guide, and a plurality of book leaf guides secured to selected fingers at the front thereof and extending vertically above said fingers and vat their upper ends to a point above the uppermost position of movement of said clamp. V
2. In a construction of the class described, a supporting bed, .a back guide located transversely over said bed and movable to different positions thereon, said back guide having a plurality of spaced apart forwardly extending vertical fingers, a vertically movable clamp mounted above said bed in front of the back guide, and a plurality of book leaf guides adjustably secured to selected fingers, each comprising a vertical bar, and means for securing said bars at different positions in the length of the fingers, the upper ends of said vertical bars extending to a point above the uppermost position of movement of the clamp.
23. A book guide comprising a vertical bar having a downwardly and rearwardly inclined lower end edge and a pair of cars extending from the lower end portion and at the rear edge of said bar, combined with means for adjustably securing said ears to a support. 7
4;. A device of the class described comprising a vertical bar rectangular in cross section having a downwardly, and rearwardly inclined lower end edge, a pair of earsproject- JAMES EDGAR LEE.
