' JOHN A. HOKE, F.PLEASANT HILL, MISSOURI ATTACHMENT FOR THE AGITATORS OF WASHING MACHINES Application filed May 9, 1930. Serial No. 451,118.
This invention relates to an attachment for the agitator of a washing machine, the general object of the invention being to provide means for preventing the clothes from settling around the stem of the agitator and becoming tangled thereon and to more thoroughly agitate the water and thus increase the washing action.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several. views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation showing the attachment on the stem of an agitator.
Figure 2 is a section on line 22 of Figure 1.
In these views, the letter A indicates the agitator of a washing machine, and the numeral 1 indicates a collar fastened to the stem thereof by the screws 2, the heads of the screws being embedded in the collar so that they will not tear the clothes. The collar is provided with a notch 3 and the numeral 4 indicatesa sleeve which is slipped over the stem and has a projection 5 at its lower end for engaging the notch 3 so that the sleeve will rotate with the agitator. A plurality of fins 6 is formed on or connected with the sleeve, each fin having its side edges converging from its base, with its point rounded and the faces of each fin are rounded, as shown, so that there is no danger of the fins tearing the clothes.
This device acts to keep the clothes from settling around the stem when the apparatus is in operation and also prevents the clothes from being tangled around the stem and keeps the clothes under the water. The fins also act to increase the agitation of the water so that the washing action is much faster when this device is used than it is when the device is not in use. The sleeve and the fins thereon can be removed whenever desired by simply slipping the sleeve ofi the stem.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
I t is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
IVhat I claim is 1 In combination with an agitator of a Washing machine including a stem and blades on the stem, a collar connected with the stem and contacting portions of the blades of the agitator, said collar having a notch therein, a sleeve encircling the stem and having a projection thereon engaging the notch and fins carried by the sleeve.
