Description

P. DEMING".
KEY BOARDS FOR TYPE WRITERS. No. 179,531. Patented July 4,1876
: I Qvmvog= N, PETERS, PHDTO-LITHOGRAFNER WASHINGTON, D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE YPHILANDER DEMING, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN KEY-BOARDS FOR TYPE-WRITERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,531. dated July 4, 1876; application filed June 12, 1876.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILANDER DEMING, of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New'York, have invented a new and 1mproved Key-Board for Type-VVriters, of which the following is a specification:
- rubber, and similar fabric, and intermediate washers, fitted to the stems of the keys.
In the drawing, A represents the key-board of a bholes & Glidden or other typewriter,
and B the key that slides in a perforation of the key-board, and is attached to the springacted and guided lever, that forms the connection with the type-rod, in the usual manner. The stem of the key is made longer than usual in type-writers, for the purpose of passing through a number of alternating layers, 0, of cloth, rubber, and similar fabrics, which are stretched on and secured to the key-board,
The layers B are perforated like the keyboard, to provide for the sliding motion of the stems of the keys. Tightly-fitting washers D, of rubber or other material, are placed around the stem intermediately between the layers B, and are retained by the same, so as to admit the motion of the key, but without admitting the escape of the clicking or other sounds made thereby. The Working of the keys on the key-board is thus accomplished in perfectly noiseless manner, so that the type-writer may be employed Without annoyance for stenotypic purposes in courts, churches, and other places, the type-writer casing being, furthermore, covered by suitable layers for deadening the sound of the mechanisms.
. Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improvement in type-writers, the combination of the key-board and keys with perforated layers of soft fabrics and intermediate washers fitted tightly on the stems of the keys, substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
