Description
F. E. QUEST SMOKING ADVICE March l0, 1931.
Filed Jan. l0, 1927 INVENTOR Patented Mar. 10, 1931 'i UNITED STATES AP ATENT`v oFFlcE i rRANcIs n. QUEST, or IcNoxvILLE, PENNSYLVANIA, AssIGNoaoF ONE-HALF To oTIs rr.' QUEST, or KNOXVILLE, rENNsYLvANIa l SMOKING DEVICEv Application filed January 10, 1927. lSerial No. 160,045.
This invention relates to smoking devices and more particularly to an improved arrangement for use with pipes, cigarette holders and the like for the purpose of cooling the smoke and extracting the nicotine and heavy oils therefrom.
Various arrangements for accomplishing this purpose have hitherto been employed, but these have generally been so constructed as to be difficult, if not impossible, to properly clean, with the result that they not only eventually become useless through lack of cleaning but constitute in themselves sources of trouble.
An object of this invention is to provide a device of the type set forth of such construction and arrangement as Ato effectively remove the nicotine and the like from the smoke and which can at the same time be readily cleaned.
A further object is to construct a pipe of such construction and arrangement that any clogging of the smoke passage leading 4from the bowl thereof can be easily and quickly overcome.
A still further object is to providea device of the type set forth which will be of simple construction, cheap to manufacture and positive and reliable in operation.
These and other objects which will bel ap-` parent to those skilled in this particular'art are accomplish-ed by means of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through a pipe constructed in accordance with one embodiment of this invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a cigarette holder, showing an additional detail Vfor use with this class of article and Fig. 3' is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
The particular embodiment of the present invention which has been chosen for the purposes of illustration is shown in connection with a pipe stem 5 having the usual mouthpiece or bit 6 associated therewith and provided with a bowl 7. A nicotine collector 8 is provided and, as illustrated, the collector is secured to the mouthpiece 6 in the usual manner. The collector extends throughout the length of the pipe stem and is provided with alternately arranged, crosswise'extende. ing flattened portions 9 andlO formed so as to provide outwardly projecting lugs 9 and 1,0 hav-ing hollowed or concave sides 9"y and 10, respectively. Such a-.form of collector provides a circuitous vpassageway 11 or irreg ular or varying cross section from the bowl to the mouthpiece. It will be apparent that the passageways on each' side of the lugs 9, vforv example, between the crosswise extending portions 10 is of substantial area while the opening between each pair of crosswise extending `iattened portions, indicatedat .13, is of relatively smallsize. The shoulders 114: formed around the openings 13 ofl reduced. area provide obstructions on which the nico tine and the like is collected and from which it cannot -be drawn through the stem to the mouthpiece, so that the latter is kept free of the unpleasant liquids which so frequently passv through a pipe. The mouthpiece is pro- K vided with the usual bore 15 communicating with? a similarbore y16 in the cooperating end [of the collector 8. A crossbore 17 is provided for connecting the bore of the mouthpiece with thepassageway 11. The
vend of thecollector'has a circular projection` K' 18 in the" form of a 'cylindrical'. cup or the y like which is normally positioned beyond the Vdescribed can be Aeasily and quickly cleaned,`
particularly if a small brush is used' for the purpose." If made from heat absorbing material such, for example, as aluminum or the like it will also tendto cool the smoke.
'In Fig. 2 the collector is shown in use with a cigarette tube or holderr 20 and is similar inA all respects to the smoke cleaner or collector illustratedA in Fig. 1, except that the cylindrical cup at the end of the collector used with a pipev is omitted. 'Preferably a pointed n. ger `21 or the like is Iprovided on the end of the collector- 8 inthe cigarette tube and is offrol set laterally from the aXis of the associated collector. Such an arrangement securely holds the cigarette within the tube and can also be used as an ejector by withdrawing the collector sufficiently to remove the finger 21 from` the cigarette and then returning it to its original positsion so that the end of the cigarette is forced out of the tube. By offsetting the ejector finger laterali from the axis of the cigar or cigarette ho derit can be rotated relatively to thecigar or cigarette end so that it will positively eject the latter and not merely re-enter the hole previously made by it in the cigar or cigarette.
The present invention also contemplates the provision of mechanism for preventing or overcoming the stopping of the smoke passage in the pipe leading from the bowl to the stem by particles of tobacco. As illustrated, thisris accomplished by extending the shaft 22 having the passageway 19 into the interior of the bowl and providing it with an inclined end 23. The pipe bowl 7, as illustrated, is rotatably supported upon the suitf, able shaft 22, and it will be apparent that.
rotating the bowl will cause any tobacco pai ticles to be .dragged from the end of the passageway 19 by the movement of the surrounding tobacco across the inclined face on the end of the shaft.
"What I claim as new and desire to secure by-Letters Patent is:
1. A pipe having in combination a stem, a hollow shaft leading therefrom and a bowl movably mounted on said shaft, theend of having a hollow stem, of a nicotine collector located in said stem and having crosswise extending flattened portions forming oppositely extending lugs, each portion-being arranged at right angles to the adjacent pertion so thatl the edges of said lugs form nicotilne collecting shoulders around relatively offset smoke passing openings and a cylindrical end engaging the inner wall of said stem so as to scrape and clean the same when Y said collector is withdrawn therefrom.
4. A pipe of the character described having in combination a stem, a hollowy shaft having an inclined end leading from said stem, a bowl movably mounted on said shaft and a nicotine collector fitting in said stem,
said collector having a series of flattened portions arranged oppositely to each other forming a relatively offset smoke passage and having a cylindrical end engaging the inner wall of said stem for scraping and cleaning the stem when the collector is withdrawn therefrom.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 7 th day of January,
FRANCIS E. QUEST.
