My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and* combination of elements hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims and lillustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved lift or elevator as installed for practical use and in elevated position, dotted lines indicating the retracted position thereof. VFigure 2 is a plan view of the showing of Figure 1.

Figure 5 is a plan of the pit installation for the improved lift or elevator, all moving or operating parts being omitted; dotted lines indicating alternative positions of one of the elements.
\ In the construction of my improvement as shown, a platform is composed of rails 10, 11 secured-in parallel, spaced relation to a plate 12 positioned transversely of and beneath mid-portions of said rails, the spacing of said rails and the width of said plate being less than the standard gauge of vehicles, so that a vehicle may be driven or positioned in straddling relation above said platform when the latter is in lowered position. Spacing bars, 13, maybe fixed between the rails 10 and 11 to preserve said railsin proper relative alinement and an apertured plate, 14, is positioned transversely of said rails adjacent one end thereof and fixed thereto, said plate 14 serving to further lbrace and strengthen the platform assembly and having an aperture of such size and shape as to receive and accommodate the differential housing of a motor vehicle when and as the platform is elevated into lifting position. A relatively 'long screw 15, having `external threads of-low pitch, is rigidly secured to and extends downwardly from and at right angles to the plane of the plate 12 andcentrally of said plate, said screw being slidingly received for free axial reciprocation in a tube or housing 16 vertically disposed beneath, centrally of and opening into a pit 17. Tubes or cylinders 18, 19, similar to the tube 16, are vertically disposed in parallel relation with and space-d on opposite sides from said tube 16 with their upper ends opening into the pit 17 and cylindrical guides 2() and 21 are slidingly mounted for axial reciprocation in the cylinders 18 and The guides tively longerthan the screw 17 so-that said shown `guides will still have a portion of their lengths engaged in the slide bearings when Vthe lower-end of,thescrew.13 has been raised above .the upper'vend of the,;tube 16. Itis readily to be seen that the engagement of the-.rails 10 `and,11 withtheaxlesfor fixed portions of the .vehicle lea-ves fthe wheels thereof free to rotate and makes adjustments and repairs of said Vwheels a simple and eX- -peditious--task withoutithe necessity of furtheriacling or elevating said wheels. Likewise, the skeleton form of the supporting platform,permits,free access to various parts of the vehicle, facilitating and eXpediting any :werkte fbe don'efthereon.
