Application {nea nay 1o, 1929. sanar No. 362,076.
This invention relates to coat hooks in general, and particularly to that type of coat hooks 'which are used in' connection with sheet The object ofthe invention is to provide new and improvcdhooks which can be assembled in a locker with a minimum amount of labor anda maximum amount of security.
Another object/is to vprovide an improved construction for coat hooks and the like which will require but a single hole in the partition upon which the hook is mountedvvithoutsacrilicingany of the rigidityand which will maintainthe hook in proper rigid position.
' Another-Objectis to provide a hookliaving complementary lugs and recesses so that When a pair Oi? hooks is arranged back to back the lugs on one-hook will nestin the recess of another hook. l K. i
Another object is to provide a coat hook which has an outturned lug or projection so that a pair of the hooks maybe placed back to hack, and the lugs inserted ina slot or recess in the locker ceiling and maintained in proper rigidposition by the Ause of a single fastening means passing through the body ofthe hooks.
A further object is to provide an improved coat hook which has an upstanding outturned lug or projection and complementary lugs and recesses so that a pair of hooks may be located on opposite sides of the wall or they may he inserted in a slot or recess of the ceiling of the locker and then held in position by means of a single tightening means.
A still further object is to provide a universal coat hook which may be singly fastened to the wall of a locker, which is provided with means so that exact duplicates of thehooks may be applied back to back and selectively fastened to the side Walls or the ceiling of the locker, and which employs the use of but a single tightening means for securely maintaining the hooks in proper rigid position regardless' of themanner in which they are applied to the locker.
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear. u
The invention comprises in general a coat hook having a flattened base which 1s provided with a single hole to receive the tightening meansn Complementary lugs andV recesses are arranged on the back face ot' the base so that they will distort the metal and cause indentation when the single'tightening means is drawn up. An upstanding outwardly extending projection is arranged at the top of the base, and it has its inner contacting or rear face rounded or cammed. pair of hooks may be fastened to the ceiling of alocker' by inserting'the projections 1n a slot and With the aid of a single tightening means will cause the hooks to be maintained in `proper rigidj'positionin the slot; The complementary lugs and recesses prevent movement of one hook relative to the other.
In the accompanyingr drawing which illustrates a selected embodimentof the invention the views are as follows: A 4 "i Fig.` 1 is a detail sectional view on the line 1 1 of Fig. 2 and shows a pair of hooks applied to the ceiling of a locker. l
Fig. 2 is a detail view on tlieline 2 2 of Fig.. 'l Fig. 3 isa detail top plan view.` l I Figz is a sectionalview on the line la of Fig. 1. y f
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view oi two of the hooks showing the complementary lugs andA recesses. i l
Fig. 6 is a side view showing the manner in which the hook may be applied to the side` wall of a locker. i
Fig. 7 is a 'roar view of the hook `shown in F ig. 6. j y
Referring' to the drawing, `8 designates a coat hook having a base 9 provided with a hole 10. The hook is preicrablyniade ci cold rolled metal and has the base thereof flattened by hammering or the like, so that the entire hook may be forged instead of cast.
On the inner side 11 of the base 9, that is,.
A that vvlien the hooks are brought back to cess in the other.` Thus. it may bey said the hooks-'mate Withfe'ach other or interfit, the
lug and recess being symmetrically placed With reference to the hole in the base. The
vres-uit of .this construction is that when two' hooks areplaced on oppesite'sides of theparf titionFig. 6 and a bolt 14 is inserted' in the hole 10and in a hole in the locker, the nut Will cooperate With the head 16 of thebolt and cause the lug to indent the metal ofthe partition and force itto a greater vor less Vextent into the recess12of theopposite hook.
The tivo lhooksare thus drawn up tight and fthe :lugs Will seatfin they recesses 12 and prevent bolt asanaxis. l i v Y j A lug or `projection 17 is arranged on the he hooks from rotating about the npperend of the base and hasits inner face roundedf-at`18 and its outer face. vprovided vvithka'notch. 19; so that a .pair .of the. hooks may be easily inserted througha slotV or an opening 20 in the ftopr Wall or ceilingy -21 of thee lockerny j vis to be vplaced under. some object kso that .it is necessary `to keep: the top ofthe locker flush, the top maybe provided with a depressionfQQ-gas .clearly shown in Figs. 1 to 3. A Washer or other reinforcing meins ber v23=`may .be placed ifn the depression 22 and it is preferablymade the 'saine size as the depression and iii-sucha manner that the washer Will not rotate therein, Fig. 3.- vThe projections may be yprovided with beveled surfaces 24 to xpermit they projections to be easily inserted'y inthe slot 20: yIfithelreinforcing Washer 23 isA used it is, of course,
also provided with aslot 25 which is prefere ably substantiallyv the saine size as the .slot 20. The result of this construction'is that when tvvo fhooksare. inserted inr thev slot in the. .ceiling the outer edges of 'the' projections Willbe forced against the material at thesides .of the slotyand prevent the hooks from .pulling out of the Vslot or fromjmoving laterally.V The complementary recesses and lugs on'therhooks will prevent one hook from moving relative to the other. The single tightening ineans holds the two hooks toget'hei"r as Well as causing th'efvbinding actionl of the projections yagainst the sidesv of the- I 'nipractice a pair'of the hooks is arranged Y back to back andf thenspread vapart so that the lugs lof therou-nded surfaces 1.8 contact. The projections-18 can therefore be readily inserted in the slot orpslots 2O and 275,. as the .caseinay be. Asthe-hooks are'brought together, the notelie's 1.9formedf-by the outwai1d bending of. the projections. Wig-ll be forced to bind againsa. and. lgrip the. sidesof the slot f in? the ceiling or Washer. .When .the
' bolt 14 is insertedv in the holes 10, and the Wall of a locker, ora pair of coat hooks may be applied'toi 'opposite "sides v'of the locker Wall lor tothe ceiling anfdz'secured in proper rigidzp'ositionaby means `"of-.a1 `single bolt. Regardless `of the positioning of the hook or tlieinanner in Which it is applied, a single type of hoolris applicable for use Whether singlyfor 'in pairsifs'paced back to 'back and fastenedto the ceiling orfthe` side Wallsof the locker'. f
Changes may be madein the form, construction, andv arrangement of the partswithout departing from the spirit ofthe invention or .sacrilicing any -of theadvantages thereof, and the right is hereby reserved to makeall such changes as fairly fall Within the scope of the following claims: f
. The Vinvention herebyl claimed asV follows:v v A unversal hook member comprising -a base ,having a hole therein, a hook integral With saidb'ase, a lug or projection on said base, a base member having a hole therein, a lugor projection on saidsecond base mein- Vber, each of saidbases having their outer ends lsaid projections, andv a ksingle fastening meanspassing through said hole-s.
