Description
March 3, 1931. R. s. SUMMERS 1,795,054
AUTOIATIC LOCKING DOUBLE RATCHETING SCREW DRIVER Filed Feb. 11. 1928 Patented Mar. 3, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE RALI "H S. SUMMERS, OF ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Application filed February 11, 1928. Serial No. 253,720.
This invention relates to a screwdriver for holding and tightening scissors, shears and other thin objects where great pressure must be exerted to tighten or loosen a screw or nut. The general object of this invention is to provide a simple screwdriver or wrench which can be readily applied to any small object, and which is so constructed as to automatically lock itself in four or more positions so that pressure and at the same time a rotating motion may be applied for rotating the screwdriver or wrench in clockwise or anticlockwise directions, locking itself when pressure is applied and automatically releasing itself when pressure is relieved. 7
Further objects of the invention will ap-- pear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel parts and combination of parts to be described hereinafter, all of which contribute to produce an efiicient automatic locking double ratcheting screwdriver or wrench.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is described in the following specifications, while the broad scope of the invention is pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective showing my screwdriver. This View shows my screwdriver in an unlocked position.
Fig. 2 shows a cross section of my head, showing spring and screwdriver in an unlocked position.
In practising my invention, I provide two handles 1 and2 which are held in place by a bolt 3. At the forward end of handle 2 I provide a receptacle for holding screwdriver l in position, this receptacle being recessed to permit the insertion of spring 5 around the shank of screwdriver 4 which is held in the receptacle by key 6. Pintles 7 are engaged in slots 8 of the receptacle in the end of handle 2 when pressure is exerted on handles 1 and 2, locking my screwdriver or wrench for rotation in either a clockwise or anticlockwise direction. When pressure is released on handles 1 and 2 spring 5 raises screwdriver l disengaging pintles 7 and slots 8, permitting the handles to be moved in any direction.
It is understood that the embodiment of the invention described herein is only one of the many embodiments this invention may take, and I do not wish to be limited in the practice of the invention, nor in the claim, to the particular embodiment set forth.
What I claim is A device for holding and turning a screw or bolt comprising a pair of handled parts so connected to each other that, upon gripping both, an article may be clamped between them, a shank having at one end means for engaging a bolt or screw head to turn the same, said shank axially movably and rotatably mounted in one handle part and means engageable with said shank, on axial movement thereof to prevent rotation of said shank and means for yieldably projecting said end of shank between the handle menibers which disengages the rotation preventing means, so that when pressure upon the handles is relieved said handles may be turned upon the shank, while the shank end remains held in engagement with the screw or bolt.
