This invention relates to guy rodssuclras are commonly employed for securing the ends of guy cables and wires used'in connection with'telegraph and telephone ,poles or the like. 7 y
-In' using the conventional form of guy rod having a plain drop forged cye,it is customary toemploy a guy thinible which is of groo'vedconstruction and curved teentendthrough the eye to receive and protect the guy cable or wire as it is drawn taut before being clamped. Vith such an arrangementfit is necessary for a man to hold thefithimble in proper position to keep it from pinching the cable during thedrawing operation. Various attempts have been made heretofore to overcome the disadvantages of this construction, but these have been unsatisfactory for different reasons,
such as weakening the eye, flattening ,the cable, expense in manufacture, or-the like.
An object ofthis invention is to provide a device .ofthe type set forth constructed and arranged to overcome the disadvantages herein above referred to.
A-further object of this invention is to provide a guy rod having an open eye construction so arranged as to produce a rod and eye having the strength of a closed, drop .3 forged eye.

In the embodiment of this invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2,'the inner side o-fea'ch of the lugs? slopes downward towards-its extending end. -The opposite faces of the lugs 7 are adapted to cooperate for forming a supporting oraxle shaft for the thimble 8. 'l he thimble 8 has an; inner bearing surface or bore whose outline conforms to the outline of .the inner sideofthe lugs 7 when the latter .are in their axial position. The purpose thereof has been before set forth. In the embodiment of Figs- 3 andi the extending lugs 7 are provided with perpen- .dicularly projecting-inner sides, and the thimble 8 has a bearing or bore surface whose out line conforms to the outline of these lugs jwhen in their axial position.
Asillustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, each stub shaft is tapered from a point adjacent the supporting bifurcation where it is smallest to the outer end thereof whichis substantially larger. As illustrated, the upper face of each stub shaft extends perpendicularly froni' the associated t1ne,butthe lower or inner face extends (nitwardly-at-an angle. Asa result,
the, bearing faceof the supporting shaft 9 on the bore of thimble 8 has a double taper as shown in Fig. 2 and the bore of annulus 8 is similarly shaped with its greatest diameter in the center. As a result of this construction, the strain of the associated guy cable causes such pressure between the annular bearing faces of the annulus 8' and the tapered bearing faces of the shaft 9 that the separate parts of the latter are held against separation. V p v In the form illustrated in Figs. 3 and l, the engaging bearing faces of the supporting shaft 9 and the inner face of the bore in the annulus 8 are so arranged that a posi ti ve i:n terlocl; is established as a result of the outward pull on the annulus 8 by the associated cable. As illustrated, the inner face of each stub shaft '7 is extended to form a pro ie'ction l0 and these projections, when moved together, are received within an enlargement ll of the annulus bore, as shown in Fig. 4, with the resultthat the bifurcations 6' and separate parts of the supporting shaft 9 are positively locked against separation when the annulus is moved into the locking position as a result of the strain of the associated guy cable.
\Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A guy rod having a bifurcated end, inwardly extending thimble supporting memhers disposed on said bifurcations, and an annular guy wire engaging thimble mounted on said members between said bifurcations, the engaging surfaces of said thimble and said bifurcations being formed so as to prevent separation of said members. I
2. A guy rod having a bifurcated end, inwardly projecting thimble support-ing members formed on said bifurcations, and an annularguy wire engaging thimblemounted on said members, the bearing faces of said thimhle and said members being shaped so as to employ the pull of an associated guy wire for holding said membersto'gether.
3. A guy rod having a bifurcated end provided with inwardly extending members adapted to cooperate so as to form a supporting-shaft, a guy wireengaging annulus loosely mounted on said shaft and having the bore thereof formed so as to cooperate with said shaft to hold the parts thereof together when an associated guy wire is operatively associ- 'ated therewith.
4. A guy rod'having an eye formed by spaced prongs and inwardly'extending thimble supporting members provided with enlarged inner. ends and a guywire engaging annulus mounted on said members and having a bore enlarged centrally thereof for receiving the enlarged inner ends of said members to prevent separation of said members.

'wardly projecting thimble supporting members mounted on said bifurcatlons, the inner sides of each of said members having a perpendicularly extending portion at the end thereof, an annular guy wire engaging thimble mounted on said members, the bore of said thimble having an outline conforming to the outline of the inner side of each of said members so that said thimble will lock said lugs in axial position. 7. A guy rod having a bifurcated end, inwardly extending lugs disposed on said bifurcations, means for engaging a guy wire held within said bifurcated end, said lugs being transversely split so that said means can be fitted thereon after said bifurcated end is formed.
8'. A guy rod having a bifurcated end, inwardly extending thimble supporting members disposed on said bifurcations, an annular guy wire engaging thimble for mounting on said members between said bifurcations, said lugs being transversely split so that said thimble can be fitted thereon after said bifurcated end is formed.
