WASHING MACHINE` Application filed January 8, 1929. Serial No. 331,051.
The present invention relates to Washing machines or the like of the drum type and 'aims to provide certain improvements therein. More particularly it relates to improvements in the doors and door-locking mechathe drum is greatly facilitated.
According to the present invention lrprovide the drum with ahinge-d door, which, in
open position, is adapted to bridge the space between the Ydrum'and the housing within which it is movable. vided into radial chambers', the door serves as an extension for the radial' Wall and'provides a continuous slide' over which the clothes from the drum can be removed or slid directly into a receiving receptacle. VPreferably, hinged double doors are used` onthe drums, and each door section is provided with independent locking means, andv both door sections are provided with cooperating means for insuring the locking of both said door sections. The invention also embodies other features of novelty which will be hereinafter more fully described.
A preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein, A

Vhere the drum is di-v Fig. 8 is a radial section taken substantially along the plane of the line 8 8 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, let 10 indicate the washing drum unit `which is of cylindrical form, and -as herein shown, is perforated with openings 10 anddivided by the radial Walls 1l, 11 and 112y into three radial chambersi, 12fand 122 respectively. Each of these Chambers is `providedwith an opening 13 in its cylindrical Wall, and with interior baffles le and 15 of conventional design for promoting the washing action. The drum 10 is mountedl upon a horizontal axis in concentric spaced relation to an enclosing housing 16l (shown in dot and dash line in Fig. 2) sai-douter housing having the conventional opening and closure therefor (not shown), the lower edge of said opening designated by the reference numeral 17, being preferably located below the axis of the housing. outer housing 16 is preferably stationary, while the drum 10 is adapted to be rotated therein. The partsthus far described constitute a form of Washing machine noW in y use.
. 18 in the drum and also novel loclrin Y means for said closure, the advantages of which will be apparentfrom thedetailed descripion of these improvements which follows. Y
Instead of the conventional arcuate sliding doors now used on machines of the type described, I employ a hinged double door Vherein indicated by the reference numerals 18 and 1.9, whichvdoor sections are hinged to the drum at 20 and '2l respectirely through the medium of butt hinges 22 and 23 respectively. ln order to insure a perfect closure for said door sections and eliminate Vall possibility of recesses or openings in which the lint or clothes may catch and damage 'thereto be done, provide a jan'ib 24 which extends completely around the opening 13 so that the door sections 18 and19 will have a flush seating. To further insure theflush continuity of the inner Wall of the door sections and also vto insure against the outward pressure against said door-sections, I 'extend the'wall 'of .the door section 19 outwardly to provide The '1' a .flange 26 Which serves in closed position of said door section as a jamb for the adjacent edge on the door section 18, the body portion of which carries an over-hanging flanged member 27, the base of which is adapted to seat against the jamb 26, While the overhanging and re-bent portion 28fvvhich provides a channel 29 1s adapted to engage over a longitudinal rib 30 on the door section faber inward-lv` as shown at 33 vand are adapted to engage in recesses 34 and 35 respectively formed inlugs or abutments 36 and 3i" respectively a-flixed to the inner Wall of the drum. The inner ends of the bolts 31 and 32 are oppositely screw-threaded, as
' shown at 38 and 39 respectively, and are :rse
moved longitudinally in opposite directions through the medium of a spiral gear 39 into which they are screw-threaded, which, in turn, is adapted to be rota-ted by-a worm 40 .having a socket 40" into which a suitable key 402 may be inserted. To insure rectilinear movement for the bolts 31 and 32 they are provided with polygonal portions 42 which are slidable and non-rotatable in lugs 43 carried by the inner Wall of the door section. lo protect the lock mechanism and at the same time insure against any of the lock parts doing injury to clothes Within the drum, the entire lock mechanism is enclosed Within a housing 44 which provides an additional internal baffle rib Within the chamber. Prefer'- ably the lugs 36 and 37 are so shaped as to form continuations ofthe housing 44 and thus render the baffle rib continuous across the chamber. To protect the lock mechanism at the outside of the drum, a suitable cover plate 45 is provided, which cover plate also carries part of the bearings for the spiral gear 39 and the Worm 40.
The latching means on the door section 19 consist of a pair of slotted slide members 46 formed at their inner' ends with finger-engaging flanges 47, and at their outer end with pins 48 engageable in sockets formed in lugs '49 affixed to the outer Wall of the drum. To
guide said slide members-46, a screw or pin 50 is passed through the slot therein and the pin 48 is guided through an opening in an outwardly-extending flange 51 carried by a member 52 affixed to the outer Wall of the door section.V It will be apparent from' anr inspectionv of the slide members 46 thatV their movement toward each other is limited by the slots therein. It Will also be apparent from an inspection of Figs. 1, 3 and 4 that the overhanging flange 28 on the door section' 18 is of a length slightly in excess of the rib 30 on the door section 19, and that said flange is adapted to extend beyond each end of said rib a distance such that it will engage over said rib when the slides 46 are in latching position, but Will be hindered in such engagement when the slides 46 are in unlatching position.vr It Will also be noted that in order for the door section 18 to properly seatV against the jambs 24 and 2G, the flange 28- must engage over the rib 30. Hence it Will beappreciated that kthe flange 28 and rib 30 `constitute means. for insuring the proper tions are removably secured to the respective :parts by screws 55, whereas the intermediate sections arev r'ivetedfor non-removably secured vto theY respective parts. Also, the
hinge pins 2O and 21 are made in sections corresponding-tothe sections of the leaves.` The-advantage of this construction, it will be apparent, resides in the fact that should any poition of the hinge become defective orinoperative,it is not necessary to remove the enti-re hinge but merely to remove `the end u hinge sections, whereupon access can be gained to any intermediate section.
As hereinbefore stated, the axis of the drum is above the bottom edge 17 of the opening in the outer housing 16. Hence when the openings 13 and 16 are brought into coincidence and the door 'section 19 opened to restfagainst the 1edge 17, it will be apparent thatsaiddoor section .19 serves as a continuation of the inclined radial Wall 11 and hence serves the dual function of bridging the space between the drum and the outerhousing` and of providing a 'continuous inclined slide, so that clothes can be easily moved or slid from Within the chamber 12 directly into a receptacle 56 positioned beneath the open door section 1 9. All danger of clothes falling between the drum and outer housing is thus overcome andl thel entire operation of removing the clothes from the chamber greatly facilitated. v l
Although in the foregoing description I have not made specific reference to the charaoterl ofthe materials employed no1 the precise mannern which-the parts are joined or connected, and have made speciic'reference to but a single section of a drum, it is to be underctood that the device, is applicable equally Well to a single section, multiple section or Pullman type of machine, and that the details of construction may be varied Within the reahn of mechanical and engineering skill. Hence, modifications of the device as described may be resorted to Without departin(Y from the spirit of the invention.
That claim is :V l. A Washing machine comprising a ydrum havingan opening, a. door for saidopening, locking,l means for said door, and baille ribs on the inner wall of the drum, said lockingl means comprising` a pair of opp0sitelymov able lock bolts and a pair of recessed keepers for the ends of said bolts, said bolts and said keepers beingenclosed Within a baffi@ rib.
g Y 2. A .vashino"machine comprising a. drum having` an opening, a. door for said opening, locking means Jfor said door, and baille ribs on the inner Wall of the drum, said locking` means comprising a pair of oppositely-movable lock bolts having tapered ends and a pair of recessed keepers for the tapered ends of said bolts, means for simultaneously moving said bolts, said bolts and said keepers being` enclosed Within a baiiie rib.
ao In Witness whereof, I have hereunto signer my name.
