MORGAN BURNS, or HYDE PARK, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT lN LUMBER-WAGONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 179,396, dated July 4, 1876 application filed March 10, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORGAN BURNS, of
Hyde Park, Cook county, State of Illinois,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lumber-Wagons, of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure'l is a plan view; Fig. 2, a side View; Fig. 3, a vertical longitudinal section of the parts shown.
In these figures the bolster is removed.
My invention consists in making a couplingplatform of cast metal, to be secured to the front axle I and adapted to receive the tongue and reach in devices for connecting the bolster at the front with the other parts; in the manner of connecting the pole and taking the weight from the necks of the horses; in the use of strap and chain braces for the tongue, and in the other devices herein claimed.
In the drawings, A represents a couplingplatform. It is provided with a pole-socket, a, an axleclasp, b, a reach-socket, c, and a nut-socket, cl. All these parts are in a single piece of malleable iron. It is secured to the front axle by means of bolts and nuts 0. The pole Bis secured loosely in its socket a by means of a single bolt and nut, f. g is a nut, which is placed loosely in its socket or chamber d. h is a cover for the chamber (Z, held in place by screws or bolts and nuts 2'. k is a coupling-pin. It passes through the top of the platform, through the reach 0, through the cover h, and is screwed into the nut g. This nut has one or more holes in its edge, and there is an opening in the wall of its chamber (1, through which a pin can be inserted to hold the nut while the pin k is being brought to place. The upper end of this pin 70 has a screw-thread.
D is the bolster-clasp. It has a nut, l, to receive the upper end of k, and it is secured to the bolster by means of bolts. The bolsterclasp,in use, works on that part of the platform just over the end of the reach, and may be called the bridge. at is a rubber spring. Its lower end rests on the bar a, cast with the platform. Its upper end extends up into the pole. It can be secured by means of a short bolt, extending down into it about half-way.
To prevent wear, the sides of the pole within the socket may be faced with metal.
E is a clasp and plate for the evener. It and the bolster-clasp l) are made of malleable iron. It is bolted to the pole B. F are wroughtmetal straps secured to the axle I by means of a strap-clasp. G are wrought-metal straps connected with evener-plate. H are chains, the ends of which are connected with the straps G H, serving the purpose of braces, but permitting a little lateral movement of the tongue.
The coupling-platform is about fifteen inches wide at the rear, and about two feet and four inches long. The rear portion is provided with suitable strengthening-flanges. By the use of this coupling-platform considerable expense is saved, and thereis no king-bolt passing through the axle. The tongue is so connected and supported that its weight is not on the necks of the horses.
The spring at is useful, especially when the wheels go into holes or pass over other uneven places.
I find it desirable to use the straps G and F in order to bring the brace-chains into the proper position. If chains were connected directly to the evenerplate and to the axle, they would be out of place relatively to the point of attachmentof the tongue.
WVha-t I claim as new, and desire to secure byLctters Patent, is as follows:
1. The coupling-platform A, provided with a pole-socket, a, axle-clasp b, nut-chamber d, and socket or opening for the reach, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The bolster-clasp D, provided with a nut, l, to receive the coupling-pin, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
3. The platform A, having aehamber, d, in combination with the nut 9, cover h, couplingpin it, and bolster-clasp D, substantially as specified.
l1 MORGAN i BURNS.
mark.
