My invention relates to railway rolling stock and consists in a novel locomotive tender construction and more particularly in a tender underframe adapted. to form all, or a substantial part, of the bottom of the tender tank and adapted to mount stoker mechanism.
One of the objects of my invention-is to provide an underframe, having the characteristics referred to, which is as wide asthe tank structure and is provided with sills at its sides located high enough above the rail *topermit access under the side sills and adj acent'bottom portion of the-under-frame and over the trucklwheel pieces below the underframe.

The tender side sheets are riveted or Welded to the sidesills as shown in Figure 7 and together with'the sills form side girders for carrying the loads at the side of the tank;
and as agresult of this construction the depth and weight of-the side sills are much less than would be necessary for an open type tender frame for a tank having 9 1O and'll form 65 the same capacity. Other advantages of thetshallow side sills for my underframe structure arethat the bottom of each side sill is a substantial distance above the level of the bottom of the center si'll and above the truck frameor wheel piece T, the top of side sills are the same height or level as the highest portions of the center sills and bolsters, and web 6 extends'inwardly of the underframe from the bottom of side sill 1 for a substantial distance to provide access to the truck parts by means of the space between the web and truck frame wheel-piece. Within the truck. side frame, member 6 extends downwardly and inwardlyv to the .bottom of the center sill. This arrangement of web, sills and bolsters provides a construction that is much simpler than one' where the top of sills and bolsterswould belowered to the level of the 'bottom of the stoker compartment, as the web 6 which extends inwardly from the bottom of the side .sills would have to be made with large recesses on the underside to provide foraccess 4 between the same and the truck side frame.

All of the space below top plate 18, and to the outside of upright plate 16', forms a water com rtment extending along the side of the sto er compartment and this water compart- -m nt is extended downwardly and inwardly through the underframe throughout the length of the bolster and throughout the length of the center sill. At the bolster, the lower web 6 of the underframe is provided with pads 20 for mounting suitable side bearings. At the sides of the bolster, the lower web 6 may incline more directly from the side sill to the center sill as best shown in Figure 8. This construction provides for the drainage of the water in the tank to the center of the underframe whereby substantially all of the water may be drawn off, if necessary.

In order to facilitate the molding'of a cast tender frame, such as I illustrate, I provide the various webs with suitable openings 28' and, after the casting is completed, core sand may be removed through these openings and the openings thereafter closed bymeans of plates 29 preferably welded over the same.
' Additional features of the preferred structure are the integral step 25 and integral safety chain 'lug'26 andsuitable members 27 forming a draft pocket. At 30, I illustrate a center plate structure which is adapted to facilitate lubrication of the truck and body center plate elements but this lubrication features does not form any part of my present invention.
