This invention relates to oretreating apparatus, and "more particularly to a calcine' car and to a new and improved dust sealthereforto'p'revent the escape of dust when the 1 calcine is charged from the car into a furnace.
The invention relates to the treatment'of ore, dust or other materials in which the raw 1 material is first roasted in a suitable roasting furnace and-then is transferred by means jof'a 'ca-lcine car to a smelting furnace. In thus transferring the calcine it is necessary to firstfill the .car with the calcined'material from the roasting furnace and then to move the r then discharged directly from thecar in'to the smeltingfurnace. .Inmaking. this trans fer it is desirable to prevent'the escape ofdust "intothe atmosphere inorder toprevent a sub stantial loss of material and to avoid contaminating the air and thereby causing discomfort and injury to operators. 7 The present invention accomplishes this by providing a seal between the 'discharge'hopper of the calcine car and the feed pipe leading to the furnace; Means is provided whereby a substantially tight seal is automatically obtained and a simple control mechanism is employed for rendering the seal operative.

The upper portion of pipe 25 carries a housing 30 (Figs. 2 and 6) having a top flange 31 V by means of which itmay be secured to a stationary supporter platform 32 on which rails 13 arecarried'. Flange 31 is recessed to slid- V ably receive rods 35. Tubular member 33 is slidably mounted in housing 30 and is provided at its upper end with outwardly extending supports ,34, which arecarried on the upper end of supporting r0'ds'35. The
upper end of sleeve 33 is provided with a circular opening surrounded-by a flange 36 having a spherical surface. A complementary dished member 37 1s seatedon said surface and is provided with a horizontal flange 38 Which is adapted to contact with flange 16 of spout 14. The spherical seat permits I member 37 to automatically adjust itself, to form a tight seal when it is brought into operative relationship with said spout.

' Links 48 and 49 are so related that a toggle action is produced for causing pivotal move ment of frame 40 about rod 42 thereby elevating supporting rods 35, causing" member 33 to slide upwardly in housing 30, and bringing member 3'1 into contact with the bottom flange of spout 14. Spring 52 permits the toggle tobe moved past its central position whereby the members are automatically locked. The spring furthermore insures a tight contact between flanges 16 and 38 regardless of minor variations in the location of the elements.
The upper part of calcine ear 10 is closed by a cover member 60 (Fig. 4) having a central opening therein surrounded by a rectangular flange 61. Strengthening members 62 may extend from said flange the ends of calcine car.
:When the above described, the bottom portion of the "vent71'contacts with the curved ends of slidable frame 63, thereby depressing said frame the calcine car. Slidable frame 63 is fitted within rectangular flange 61 and is supported from yokes 64 by means of springs 65. Yokes 66ers provided with bolts 67 which extend through cover member 60 and are secured to :yoke 64 for limiting the upward movement of the sliding frame 63. lhe front and rear sides of said frame are provided wlth curved extensions 70 to facilitate the passage of the framework under stationary vent pipe -71. Said vent pipe may be supported by a suitable bracing member 72 (Fig. 1) and may lead to any desired apparatus which is capable of permitting passageof air while preventing the escape of dust;
In the operation of the above describeddevice,calcine cars lOare brought into the clesired position in, alignment with feed pipe 25 and vent pipe 71 for thepurposeof discharging calcine into furnace 27. When in this position, lever 45'is utilized'fo r forcing member 33 upwardlyand bringing flanges 16 and'38 into contacting relationship the 1 counterbalancing weight in receptacle 39 assisting the operatio'nof the, lever. Member '37theiiautomatically seats due to the sphericontourthereof, and causes a tight'seal between the feed pipe and the spoutto the car is brought into'the position:
and allowing the same to slide under said vent. When the cars in 1ts operative pos tion, frame 63 willbeiin alignment with the vent 71' and is firmly held against the same by means of spring 65, thereby automatically forming a seal between the opening in the top 60 of the calcine car and the vent pipe. Gate 15 nay then be opened by a suitable movement of lever 23 whereby the material within the calcine car is discharged to the furnace while the' upper and lower seals above described prevent the escape of dust during the charging operation.
To again remove the car it is only necessary to break the lower seal by a suitable movement of lever 45 thereby releasing the car from contact with the furnace feed pipe. The upperseal is automatically broken as frame 63 slides from under the lower portion of the vent 71 when the car is removed. Vent 71 is preferably located over the feecLpipe in order to permit direct passage of aircur rents whereby more efficient ventilation. is obtained. It is to be noted that by providing an upperautomatic seal only a single hand jcontrol is necessary for completely sealing .the'calcinc car against loss of dust.
While certainnovel features of the invention have been shown and described and are pointed out 111 the annexed claims, it will be understood that various omissions, substitutions and changes in the forms and details of the device illustratedaand in its operation may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit'of the invention. ,7
What is claimed is: V 1. In combination with a material con- .veyor, a discharge spout terminating in a substantially horizontal surface, a stationary feed pipe positioned below said conveyor and having a telescopicmember in communicabysaid telescopic member and adapted to Contact with said horizontal surface, said member being adapted to accommodate itself to angular displacement whereby a tight seal with said horizontal surface is automatically effected, and means for elevating sald't'elescopic member comprising a pivoted member and a lever for controlling the position of said pivoted member.
In combination with a furnace feed pipe, a shdable member mounted therein, a pivoted lever pivotally connected to said slidable member, and means for causing pivotal movement offsaid lever comprising a pair. of links forming a toggle 1omt, one of said links being reslliently secured to said lever.

In combination with a stationary feed pipe, an extensible member shdably mounted thereon, a pivoted lever, links connectmg said lever to saidextensible member, means for controlling the position of said lever including a rod pivoted thereto, a link slidably carried in said rod, reslllent means for maintannng said link in operative position, and
means cooperating with said link for controlling the position thereof. r
4.
