This invention relates to improvements in bandalore toys of the type disclosed in the U. S. Letters Patent, to Streisguth and Schnitzler, No. 279,888, dated June 19, 1883.
The primary object of the present invention'is to provide a toy of the above kind in which fans or screw impeller blades are mounted at opposite side of the roller and adapted to rotate with or relative to the latter to add to the attractiveness of the toy.
Other objects will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, and the same consists'in the novel form, combination and arrangement ofparts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a toy embodying the present invention.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Figure 1. V
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the toy shown in Figure 1, with the cord broken away.
Figure 4 is a vertical section on line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 1 of a modified form of the toy.
Figure 6 is a-view similar to Figure 5 with 39 the curved impeller blades reversed.
Figure 7 is a view similar to Figure 4; of the toy shown in Figure 6; and
Figure 8 is a side elevation of the toy shown in Figure 6. Referring in detail to the drawings, the
present toy embodies the usual roller formed of side disks 5 and a connecting hub 6, the
latter having one end of a cord 7 secured thereto for spinning the roller in a well known manner.
In accordance with the present invention,-
fans or screw impellers 8 are mounted at opposite sides of the roller with their axes 59 ed thereon, caps 10 being frictionally fitted onthe 'end s of th 'pin .9 outwardly of the fans to retain thelatter'in place. By setting the caps 10-to barely engage the fans, the
latter maybe left free to'turn on the pin 9 I 8 relative to the roller, thus relying mainly on 5:; the action of the air on the fans to turn the same when the roller spins and swings'back and forth during'the' operation of the toy. However, by tightening the caps 10, the'fans may be clamped-between the same and the 6G sides oftherollerto turn therewith, thus tudinally curved form and arranged to con- 7 0 form to the curvature of such faces. This presents a compact construction in which damage to the fans is rendered unlikely, and screws 11 may be removably threaded into the sides of the roller to support the fans. By removing the screws 11, the position of the blades may be reversed as shown in Figures 6 to 8 inclusive, wherein the blades are disposed with ends curving outwardly from the sides of the roller. This will enhance the attractiveness of the toy by sacrificing protection of the fans and in either case the screws 11 may be adjusted to allow the fans to turn freely thereon relative to the roller or tightened to cause them to turn with the roller, as, desired. V
. In use, the cord 7 is wound on the hub 6 and then the free end of the cord is held when the roller is dropped. The roller is thus rapidly rotated by the unwinding of the cord therefrom, and when the cord is completely unwound, the cord is given a slight upward pull for causing the roller to again wind upon the cord. The operation may be continued indefinitely, and the rotating fans will furnish a variation of action and appearance constituting a highly amusing feature of the toy.
Changes in the form and character of the fans and their specific mode of attachment are contemplated within the spirit of the invention.
' What we claim as new is:
1. In a bandalore toy, the combination of a roller formed of side disks and a connecting hub, a cord attached at one end to the hub, and rotary fans mounted at opposite sides of the roller with their axes coincident with the axis of rotation of the roller, said side disks having convex outer sides, said fans being longitudinally curved to follow the contour of said sides of the disks.
2. In a bandalore toy, the combination of a roller formed of side disks and a connecting hub, a cord attached at one end to the hub, rotary fans mounted at opposite sides of the roller with their axes coincident with the axis of rotation of the roller, said side disks having convex outer sides, said fans being longitudinally curved to follow the contour of said sides of the disks, and means to removably mount the fans at the outer sides of the roller to permit reversal of the fans with respect to said roller.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures.
