The invention is a label that is particularly adaptable'to be placed around cans and is providedwith means'to prevent a white spot showing at one edge of the lap.
The object of the invention is to provide means for obliterating the white spot at the edge of a can label lap.
Another object of the invention is to 131'0'2 vide means for obliterating the white space showing at the end of the printedmatter of a can label lap which will at the same time permit the corners of the label to be gummed.
And a still further object of the invent-ion is to providea can label in which the color of the label extends all the way to the end of the label at the ends'of the pastestrip.
With these ends in View the invention embodies a label in which the color of the label extends all of the way to the ends at the edges.
Other features and advantages of the invention will be seen-from the following descriptiontaken in connection with the drawings wherein,
Figure 1 is a view showing a can with a white space thatnormally shows at the edge of the lap filled in with diagonal lines.
Figure 2 is a view showing a label with the corners at the end of the paste strip covered with diagonal lines.
Figure 3 is a view showing a corner of a label in which the color of the label extends across the ends of the paste strip.
Figure 4i is a view showing a corner of a label in which the corners at the ends of the paste strip are covered with dots which may be of the same color as the body of the label.
In the drawings the label is shown as it would be madewherein numeral 1 indicates the body of the label, numeral 2 the paste strip-and numeral 3 the corners at the ends of the paste strip. v I
In the label shown in Figure? the corners 3 are covered with fine diagonal lines of the same color as the body of the label. It is understood however that these lines may be placed'in any other direction other than be ing diagonal as shown. It will be observed that the white spaces between the lines will provide ample adhering surface for the'paste so that the lap will be held along its entire 1927,. Serial No. 209,531.
. ity of the wrapper to match the ends exactly.
In the design shown in Figure 3 the color of the label extends all of the way to the end in a solid mass. This is not as preferable as thedesignshown in Figure 2 as it has been found that the corners of the label will not adhere to the solid mass of ink so that with this arrangement the corners do not stick.
In the design shown in Figure l the color is placed on the space with fine dots so that there is white space between the dots to whichthe paste will adhere.
It'will be understood that changes may be made in the construction without departing from the spirit of the invention, one of which changes'may be in the exact shape or design of the corner, another may be in the making of the entire borders at both edges of the diagonal lines with white spaces between them as indicated in Figure 3, and still another may be in the use of other means, other than the diagonal lines or dots to par-r tially cover the surface.
Having thus fully described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
'1. In a label in which the entire surface, with the exception of a narrow strip at one edge, is tinted and covered with printed matter and illustrations, tinting at the corners of the said narrow strip, said tinting at the corners having white spaces therein.
2. In a colored label having an uncolored paste strip at one edge, and coloring with white spaces therein at the ends of the said paste strip.
3. In a label covered with coloring and printed matter and having a narrow uncolored strip at one edge with coloring at the ends thereof, means in the colored area at.
the ends thereof for permitting paste to adhere thereto.
.In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
CARL E. RIDGWAY.
