CIGARETTE HOLDER Feb. l0, 1931.

ATTORNEY UNITED STATES Param ori-ICE MAX KRUGGELY, or CHICAGO, `iLLnvoIs l CIGARETTE HOLDER Application filed November 23, 1928. 'serial No. A321,375.
This invention relates to certain novel improvements in cigarette holders and has for its principal object the provision o f an improved construction which will be highly ethcient in use and economical in manufacture.
Among the several objects of this invention is to provide a cigarette holder with mechanism which will obstruct and prevent the nicotine or other foreign substance from being sucked into the mouth.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a cigarette holder with obstructing mechanism which may be readily and expeditiously removed for cleansing purposes.
.A still furtherobject of the invention is to provide a device of the above named character which may also be used in pipe stems and analogous places. v
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, showing the preferred form of construction and in which:
Fig. 1 is a .side elevational view of the in` vention Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of the inven-V tion showing certain parts 1n detached relation' Fig. 3 is a detail view taken substantially on line 3 3 of Fig. 4;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional detail I' view of the invention; and
Fig. 5 is a detail view similar to that illustrated in Fig. 4 showing certain parts of the invention in elevation.
To accomplish the many objects of this invention I provide, in the preferred form of construction, a cigarette holder 0r the like which includes a stem having one end portion 11 shaped to a desirable shape for convenient positioning in the mouth. The opposite end portion of this stem includes a cap 1 2 shaped to provide an annular recess 13 and a ring 14. The holder includes a tip 15 removably fitted upon the tube 16 which tube `16 is enlarged at one end to provide a housing 17.. This housing 17 at its edge 18 is adapted to frictionally fit within ,the ring' 14 and butt a ring 19 which provides connecton between the .stem 10 and cap 12.
` In this housing 17 there is arranged mechanism for obstructing the passage of nicotine and other foreign substance which might be drawn toward the stem during suction therethrough.
In the preferred form of construction thisY mechanism includes a plate 2O provided With a centralbearing sleeve 21 and a plurality of perforations 22. VThe plate is provided as an integral part of a ring 23 which friction- Y allcy fits into the housing 17 adjacent its open en Slidably mounted through the sleeve 21 is a stud 24 which carries at its end 25 a valve head 26. This valve head 26 includes an outer portion 27 having a tapered edge 28 adapted to butt against a tapered shoulder 29 pro videdby the housing. Spaced from the portion 27 and joined integrally therewithv by means of a web 30 is a disc 31 forming the other portion of the valve head and providing together with the portion 27 a chamber 32.
Formed as a part of the portion 27 and stud 24 is an enlargedv portion 32 whichprd vides a stop as will be best understood by the description to follow. In use the unlighted end of the cigarette is placed into the tip 15. After lighting the outer end of the cigarette the stem 10 is placed in the mouth. By drawing through the stem 1() the valve head will be moved to-` ward the stem against the action of' the spring 34 mounted upon the stop 33 and stud 24 between the plate 22 and the portion 27 so that communication betweenthe sleeve 16 Aand housing will be opened during this draw- Ainvested ing or suction action is discontinued the valve head will return into valve closed position by action of the spring 2A. Such nicotine or other foreign substance which is drawn along with the smoke will be obstructed in its passage by means of the plate 22 and find lodgment in the housing 17.
In practical use I intend, although I do not want to be limited to that fact, to make the housing l? from material which will have the tendency to retain a small degree of heat whereby the nicotine will be dried out from the housing.
To clean the valve the housing is detached from the cap and by clasping the studs and drawing the same outward the shoulder 33 will bear against the plate 22 and the plate with the valve form connection in the housing, said shoulder serving to prevent complete compression of the spring which would otherwise distort the same.
lVhile l have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modication, without departing from the spirit of the invention. Ltherefore. do not wish to be limited te the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims;
Having thus described my invention what l claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
l. A cigarette holder including a sleeve having a cigarette receivingportion at one end thereof and having a housing at the other end thereof, a valve seat in said housing, a valve in said housing including a guiding portion disposed in said sleeve, a perforated member in said housing opposite said valve seat, a stud extending from said valve through said housing and said perforated member, a resilient member between said perforated member and said valve for urging said valve into said valve seat, and an enlarged portion on said stud adjacent said valve adapted to engage said perforated member to limit movement of said valve away from said valve seat when said valve is moved from said valve seat by suction through a stem connected to said housing at the end thereof at which said perforated member is disposed.
2. A cigarette holder including a sleeve having a 'cigarette receiving portion at one end thereof and having a housing at the other end thereof, a valve seat in said housing, a valve in said housing including a guiding portion disposed in said sleeve, a perforated member in said housing opposite said valve seat, a stud extending from said valve through said housing and said perforated member., a resilient member between said per- 4member and said valve for urging MAX KRUGGELY.
