The present invention relates to screw hoists and particularly to hoists adapted for application to 'motor-trucks for raisingthe body of the truck and dumping the same.
Objects of the invention are to improve hoists of this character and to maintain an increase of efficiency thereof, while at the same time decreasing the weight.
l ,Other objects are toprovide a hoist which may be made to operatefmore swiftly in its downward movement than in Vits hoisting movement.
' Other objects are simplicity of construction, cheapness of manufacture, and ease of operation.
in the appended claim, and I do not wishv to be limited in the scope of my invention eX- cept as I sha-ll be limited by said-claim.
In the drawings: Y j Figure 1 is a section taken longitudinally through the center of the hoist casing. Y
Figure 2 is a. section on the line 2-.2 of Figure 1, showing the chain gear box yand gear connections therein.
Figure 3 isY a detail view showing oneofY the sprockets and its nut.
modification of the drive means for the screw operating nuts. f
j Figure 5 is a section at right angles to that shownvin Figure 47 showing further the relationship of the gears shown in Figure 4.
designates a housing comprised of a center top brace member` 11 and a lower brace member 12 connectedV at their ends to end housings. 13 containing the screwoperating nuts. Sev 1 cured to the under side of the housing 1U is a gear box 14 having journals 15 and 16 formedY therein to receive and support the drive shaft 17 on which is mounted for rotation therewith gears 18 and 19. A countershaft 2O also extends through apertures in the gear box and is provided with journals 21 and 22,17 the upper end of said countershaft having a journaled support kin the central brace 11,V
as at 23.
vVithinithe gear box loosely Ymounted on A ,spe-@tively as illustra-'ted in Figure e. Still other `objects will appear `from the following specification and will be set forth Referring to the drawings in fdetail7 10v A.train of gears 50551, 52, 53 andk54jconnecting said counter'sh'aftaregears l24e-and v25, said gearshaving clutch .cleats 26 formed on their acl-jacent faces adapted to be "connected with K a :clutch V27 having vlongitudinal 'movement relative to tlie sha-ftQGfbt :being preif'en'ted; 55

Y p
IVhile IKdeem a sprocket, chain connection between the countershaft and thel screw operating nuts asV preferable finV that it makes the device much lighter and -ifs-more positive and sure in its operation, 'I- T'Inay-employa the countershaft 20 with on'eofrthe screw/ operating" nuts '86 through gears 51, and with the other screw operating-.nut 37fthrough gears 51a and 52a.- The'nuts' and 37 areI Y i Vpreferably rectangular` in crosssection, as'
WALTER G. wnrnnnn, or READING, .PENNsrLvaufra shown in Figure 4, .and the sprockets Sand 33 are provided with bores therethrough corresponding'tothe outer surfaces of the nuts,
whereby relative turning of the sprocket and the nut is prevented.
' In operation, when it is desired to usel'the above described device as a hoist, thesame is connected horizontally uponV the Vframe V of the truck and the drive shaft 17 is preferably connected 'to a Vpower take cino-t shown,
through suitable gear or "chain connection.AV
The clutch 27 is then moved by means of the forked lever 47 pivota-lly attached to the clutch and pivoted at 48 in the side ofthe gear box, the relationship of the gears inV I the gear box-being such that when the clutch is connected for hoisting the movement will be much slower than when it is connected for loweringlthe body of the truck.` I Vprefer a` i relationship suchthat will lower the body at a speed about threel times as great as that employed in raising the same, It vwill be understood that in an emergency the body may be raised by this mechanism by hand. Y
Having described my invention, what I claimisf Y y Ina device of the character described, upper and lower spaced parallel brace members, end housings having spaced apertured lugs, bolts passed through the brace members and lugs lfor holding the end housings associated with the brace members, a counter shaft journaled in said brace members, sprockets carrled by said shaft, screw voperating nuts journaled in the end housings, sprockets thereon, endless chains. trainedV over the sprockets of said screw operating nuts and over the sprockets ,onY said shafta gear boX secured to the lowermost brace member and receivingsaid shaft, gears loosely lmounted Y on the shaft and arranged in said gear boX, a
slidingclutchon thev shaft andicooperating p A with said gears selectively, a second shaft journaled in the gear box inparallelism with the first mentionedshaft, and gears on the second mentioned shaft, an idler lmeshing `with one kof thelast mentioned androne of the aforementioned gears,` each ofsaid screw operatingvnuts having an internal threaded bore, and threaded shafts'extending throughv the bores for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I` aX- my signature.
