IMPROVEMENT IN DRAlN-HOPPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,217, dated June 27, 1876 application filed November 27, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES D. PIERCE, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain Improvements in Drain-Hoppers, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide a hopper for the mouth of drains that shall be a trap to prevent the stench from rising from the drain or cess-pool. It is a basin'set on the mouth of drains, with a movable pan over the opening in the bottom of the basin, with a slat receptacle for water and debris to be thrown into, and the water to pass through between the slats, and the debris to be held behind. The slat receptacle 0r basket is cast in the upper part of the hopper, or cast separate and riveted to the top of the hopper, and the top of the hopper is made separate and sets on the basin, which sets on the mouth of the drain, and is hung by a hinge, so that whenever it is necessary to empty the debris out of the slatted receptacle, one can take hold of the handle and tip it over, as'shown in Figure 2, and a grate or netting over the outlet of the hopper, to prevent anything but Water. from passing through.

A is the basin or lower part of the hopper; B, the upper part, hinged to the lower part; 0, the slatted receptacle, the slats running from the top to the bottom; D, movable pan; E, hinge fastening the lower part and upper part of the hopper together, and on which the upper part turns; F, grating in the orifice of part A G, handle on the side of B; H, projection on bottom of receptacle 0, forming a trap.
This hopper is placed over the mouth of a drain, and set high enough so that a pail may be set under the upper part of same to receive the debris when the upper part is dumped. The water is poured into slatted receptacle, and whenever it is necessary to empty same, take hold of handle G and dump same.
I claim as my invention A drain-hopper constructed with an upper and under part, A and B, with the slatted receptacle (J secured to the upper part B, all in combination, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
