Description

Patented June.27,1876.
D. JENKINS. LUBRICATHORS. N.'179,199.
MVEFPLEIRQTI UNITED STATES PATENT Qrrrea,
DAVID JENKINS, OF 'PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN LUBRICATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,199, dated June 27, 1876; application filed May 13, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID JENKINS, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lubricators; and I do Y hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
lubricators ,or automatic oiling-cups for bearings; and consists in actuating the valve by the motion of the hub, sliding bearing, or like part, to which the cup is attached.
I will now proceed to describe my invention so that others skilled in the art to which it ap-' pertains may apply the same.
In the drawing, A indicates the oil-cup, closed above by a screw-cap, B, having'an orifice, b, for filling the cup, closed in turn by a screw-plug, b. The bottom of the cup is pro-.
vided with a thread or suitable means for attaching it to a bearing, and is tapped and threaded to receive the valve-seat c. c is a valve-seat, securedin the bottom of the oil-cup, the central oiling-orifice 0 being closed by a stem-valve, d. On one side of the valve-seat, or, if preferred, attached to the inside of the oil-cup, is a lug or bearing, 6, for pivoting an elbow-lever, f, the said lever being secured to the stem-valve d, the long arm rising vertically, and being free to oscillate within the cup. The free end of the elbow-leverf is provided with a set-screw, h, which serves to regulate the swing of the oscillating arm, and thus control the amount of oil supplied to the hearing.
The operation of these devices is as follo ws The oiling-cup being properly attached to, and moving with, some part of the machinery or bearin g having a reciprocating rotary or oscillating motion, the pivoting of the valve and its arm being arranged in the line of motion, the pivoted arm will be oscillated by the acquired momentum, so as to lift the valve d from its seat during part of the travel of the slide or hub, thus permitting a supply of oil to flow to the bearing.
As the distance the free arm or pendulum f moves will determine the distance the valve is raised from its seat, and as upon the latter will depend the quantity of oil passing to the bearing, all that is necessary to increase or diminish the supply is to change the set-screw h, so as to increase or diminish the swing of the arm f.
Instead of the vertical oscillating arm f, the valve d may be actuated by a swinging pendulum secured to a rod or shaft passing through a stuffing-box on the side of the oilcup, which, though embodying the principle upon which my oil-cup is constructed, is inferior to the devices shown.
The advantages of the construction specified and illustrated are, simplicity and compactness, the whole mechanism being contained within the cup.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In combination with the valve of an oilcup, an arm or pendulum hinged to the valve, and pivoted at a point oft the valve, said arm being free to vibrate, so as to lift the valve from its seat at intervals, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the oil-cup, its valve, the oscillating arm or pendulum hinged to, and pivoted off of, the valve, and the set-screw to regulate the vibration of the arm or pendulum, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I, the said DAVID J EN- KINS, have hereunto set my hand.
, DAVID JENKINS. Witnesses F. W. BITTER, Jr., JAMES I. KAY.
