My invention relates to crushing machinery of the type employing rotor structures carrying hammers which engage material delivered into their path and effect breakage or rupture thereof by beating the same against a break ing surface formingone wall or'part of one ation of reducing the same, a mass of highly viscous mud builds up on the breaker plate and seriously affects vthe capacity of breaking .machinery ofthis type.

While applicable to many forms of crushshown my improved reciprocating scraper construction as applied to crushing machinery of the type illustrated in the pending application of George lV.-Borton, filed August 25, 1928, Serial No. 302,080, in which the crushing chamber is providedwith' a series of grid bars. These grid bars when employedmaybe carried by or associated'with one walltof the crushing chamber so as to temporarily retard large massesof material to becrushed which are acted upon by the uprunning hammers as theypassbetween the grid bars.
In carrying out my present invention, I may associate with that part of the frame of the machine which may be termed the wall of the crushing chamber and indicated gener ally at '1, a series of wear plates 2, which may be secured to said wallin any appropriate manner, as by the bolts This breaking surface is inclined upwardly, partly over hanging the feed chamber and the rotor, and its lower portion may be curved to meet the curved wall of the crushing "chamber.

-With a view of removing as muchras possible any accumulation of mud and/or other material that may occur at this point, when grid bars are employed, I may provide a scraper bar having depending teeth 17, such as illustrated in-Fig. 3; which'teeth may extend between the grid'bars at their points of connection with the lower breaker plate or the wear plate support 2 connected thereto and still be clear of the hammers. These teeth are preferably tapered toward their points and in addition they may have relatively sharp sid'e'e d'ges. It will be understood of course that if the grid bars are omitted the lower scraper blade may have a movement of greater extent and pass over the wear plate indicated at 2 I The scraper bars may have a cross section substantially like that illustrated in Fig. 1, of the drawings or, if desired, the under side may be concaved so as to provide sharper edges. It will be understood, however, that I donot wish to be limited to this particular form of scraper bar, since other forms may be employed without departing from my inventi on the important pointbeing to provide a suitable form of reciproc'able scraper bar- 7 for operative engagement with the entire or substantially the entire breaking surface or the breaker plate and prevent objectionable accumulation thereon of mud and/or any sticky'or slimy portion (or portions) of the material operated upon.
g It will also be understood that if any condition arises where the material contains hard rock or other material that might tend todamage the scraper bars, the latter may be held out of action by stopping the reciprocating movement of the rack bars when the chains are at their upper limitpf travel; thereby holding the scraper blade or blades clear of the crushing zone.-

11. The combination, in crushing machin-c ery, of a rotor structure having hammers, a
breaker plate against which material undergoing crushing may be thrown by the action of said hammers, a scraper bar, a pair of chains supporting said scraper bar, guideways for said chains, slidable rack'bars connected to said chains, pinions engaging said rack bars, and means for imparting movement to said pinions whereby the scraper bar may be reciprocated across the breaking surface.
