This invention relates to cooling systems for internal combustion engines and more particularlyto a thermostaticby-pass construction for controlling the Circulation of the cooling medium;
The invention has as one of its primary objects to simplify, render more efficient, and
otherwise improve constructions of this character and contemplates an improved designv of cylinder head and cylinder block wherein communicating passages are formed in the cylinder block and cylinder head constituting'a by-pass for the cooling medium. This construction distinguishes from heretofore known constructions wherein externally arranged by-passes were provided from the water outlet to the water pump or at some other point in the circulatory system with the result that certain advantages concerning the manufacture, installation and maintenance of the system were realized.
Other objects, advantagesand novel details of construction of this invention will be made more apparent as this description proceeds, especially when considered 7 in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a view partly in longitudinal section and partly in elevation of a portion of an internal combustion engine constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a View partly in section taken on the plane indicated by line 22 in Figure 1 and partly in elevation and Figure 3 is a View taken substantially on the plane indicated by line 3-3 in Figure 1 certain of the parts, however, being left in elevation.
Referring now particularly to the drawings wherein like reference characters indicate like parts it will be noted that there is. fragmentarily illustrated an engine including a cylinder block 10 formed with a plurality of cylinders 11 and a cylinder head 12 associated with the block in the customary manner. The reference character 13 indicates the customary cylinder water jacket and 14: the water compartment or space of the cylinder head 12. The cylinder water jacket 13 communicates with the water jacket of the cylinder head through the intermediary of a plurality of apertures '15 which are arranged to communicate wlth a correspondlng number of apertures 16 formed in the cylinder head.
The reference character 17 indicates a pump casing secured to the cylinder block and including a rotor 18 mounted upon a rotor shaft 19, driven in any desired manner. The cylinder block is provided, at a point adjacent the pump 17, with an inlet pocket 20 and aconduit 21 connected to the bottom of the radiator (not shown) and comembodiment of the invention herein illustrated extends vertically from the inlet pocket 20 to the upper face of the cylinder v block 10 and communication with the vertical branch 23 of a by-pass or passageway formed in the cylinder head '12 this by-pass including a horizontally extending passageway 2 1 and an opening'25 at the upper face of the cylinder head. The horizontally extending passage 24 may be bored longitudinally of an enlargement 26 formed when casting the cylinder head and the open end of this bore will be closed by a plug or the. like 27. The outlet of the by-pass is formed with a valve seat 28 adapted to be engaged by valve operated by a thermostat yet to be described.
This thermostat 29 is contained within a casing or housing 30 secured, as for instance by means of bolts 31, to the upper face of the cylinder block 12. The casing when in position provides, together with the upper face of the cylinder head, a chamber 32 and the cylinder head is provided, on opposite sides of the enlargement 26, with apertures close communication with an outlet 38 which is connected to the top of the radiator (not shown). This position of the parts occurs when the cooling medium is cold thus rendering it unnecessary to circulate the cooling medium through the radiator. However, in the other position of the parts the valve 35 seats upon the valve seat 28 and closes the by-pass and as a consequence opens communication'with the outlet 38 whereupon the water is circulated through the radiator and then back thrugh conduit 21 to the pump. This position of the parts is illustrated in Figure 3 while in Figures 1 and 2 the by-pass is opened and in the several figures the passage of the cooling medium is indicated b r arrows.
It will accordingly be obvious that with the herein described construction the cooling medium may be circulated either from the radiator, into the water pump inlet pocket 20 to the water pump and thence outwardly through the water pump outlets 39 to the cylinder water jacket 13 and from this acket through registering apertures 15 and 16 to the water compartment 14 of the cylinder head and from there through the by-pass formed in the cylinder head and cylinder block back to the water pump inlet pocket or from the water compartmentthrough the thermostat housing to the radiator and from there to the pump. Obviously the bypass in the cylinder head includes the passages 25, Qland 23 and the inlet end'ot the by-pass is connected to the water compartment of the cylinder headthrough the apertures 33 in head 12. That portion of the by-pass in the cylinder block is indicated by the reference character 22 and as described communicates with the water pump inlet pocket 20.
It will be apparent that the by-pass passages are contained within and formed in portions of the cylinder head and cylinder block so that the use of externally arranged passages is eliminated, the construction lending itself conveniently to the use of a simple form of thermostatthe casing of which may be connected to the upper face of the cylinder head to not only complete the connection between the bypass and the water chamber of the c linder head but also to provide a control or this by-pass.
lVhile the herein described construction has been found to involve considerable utility and to function with efiiciency nevertheless it will be obvious to those skilled in this particular art that various changes maybe made in many of the essential and all of the nonessential details thereof without departing from the scope of this invention and to this end, reservation is made to make such changes as may come within the purview of the accompanying claims.
What I claim asmy invention is:
1 In an internal combustion engine provided with a cast cylinder head and block,
a cooling medium circulatory system including passages formed in said head and block and a by-pass cast in said head and block.
2. The combination with an internal (011v bustion engine, of a cooling system therefor including, a water pump and water passages in the head and: block of said engine and by pass means arranged in said head and block for conducting the water to said pump di rectlyfrom said head.
3. The combination with an internal combustion engine of a cooling system including a pump and means for circulating the coolingwaterfrom said pump through the block and head of said engine and a by-pass formed in said head and block for conducting the cooling water from said head. to said pump.
I 4. The combination with an internal combustion engine, of a cooling system including, a water pump, a cylinder ater jacket connected thereto, a water chamber in the head of the engine connected to said jacket and communicating by-pass passages formed in the head and cylinder block tor conducting the water directly from the head to said pump.
5. The combination with an internal combustion engine, of a cooling system including, a water pump, a cylinder water acket connected thereto, a water chamber in the head of the engine connected to said jacket and communicating by-pass passages formed in the head and cylinder block and enclosed thereby for conducting the water directly from the head to said: pump.
(5. The combination with an internal combustion engine, of a cooling system including, a water-pump, a cylinder water jacket connected thereto, a water chamber in the head of the engine connected to said jacket, communicating by-pass passages formed in the head and cylinder block and a thermostat ineluding a casing secured to said head and affording automatically controlled means for connecting said water chamber and by-pass for conducting the water directly from the head to said pump.
7. The combination with an internal combustion engine, of a cooling system including, a pump, a cylider jacket connected thereto, a chamber in the head of the engine connected to said jacket, a portion of the head and cylinder block of the engine being formed with connected passages communicating at one end of said pump" and at the other end with the exterior of said head, said head being formed with an adjacent aperture communicating withthe ch amber thereof, a thermostat casing secured to said head and. connecting said aperture and the said end of said passage whereby the cooling medium may be bypassed directly from said head to said pump.
8. The combination with an internal combustion engine, of a cooling system including,
a pump, a cylinder jacket connected thereto, a chamber in the head of the engine connected to said jacket, a portion of the head and cylinder block of the engine being formed with connected passages communicating at one end of said pump. and at the other end with the exterior of said head,said head being formed with an adjacent aperture communicating with the chamber thereof, a. thermostat casing secured to said head and connecting said aperture and the said end of said passage whereby the cooling medium may be by-passed directly from said head to said pump and thermostatic means for controlling said by-pass.
9. The combination with an internal combustion engine, of a cooling system including, a pump, a cylinder jacket connected thereto, a chamber in the head of the engine connected to said jacket, a portion of the head and cylinder block of the engine being formed with connected passages communicating at one end of said pump and at the other end with the exterior of said head, said head being formed with an adjacent aperture communicating with the chamber thereof, a thermostat casing secured to said head and connecting said aperture and the said end of said passage whereby the cooling medium may be by-passed directly from said head to said pump, a valve seat formed in the said end of said passage and a thermostatically controlled valve in said casing and engageable with said seat for controlling said by-pass. v
10. The combination with an internal combustion engine, of a cooling system including a cylinder head and a cylinder block, a water chamber in the said cylinder head, a by-pass formed in the cylinder head and block, and a thermostat casing secured to the said cylinder head and forming a connection between the said by-pass and the said water chamber.
11. The combination with an internal combustion engine, including a cylinder block and a cylinder head, of a cooling system therefor includin a pump, circulatory passages in the cylinoer head and cylinder block, a bypass formed in the cylinder head and 0 block, and means for controlling the flow of a cooling medium throu h said by-pass.
