This invention relates to systems contact with that portion of the' wall of the` combustion chamber' most remote from the lspark plugs. v
With a cooling system arranged and constructed in accordance with-this invention certain noteworthy advantages in motor operation are obtained.y For a given amount of heat'absorbed by the water, the 'inlet and outlet temperatures will be substantially the same as with a conventional pump circulating system, but inasmuch as the entering water asses through a part of the cylinder head efore entering thel cylinder jackets, the jacket temperaturev will be higher than with the conventional types of systems. Furthermore, it has been ascertained that the 'tem- Erature of that part of the combustion chamr most remote from the spark lug has a considerable iniiuence upon the egiciency of the motor. If, forinstance, the temperature at that point is relatively high, detonation is present to a greater extent than when the temperature is relatively low. With a cooling system in accordance with the present invention the temperature at this point will be lower than with conventional types of systems.` f v The invention contemplates other objects, advantages, and the novel details of construction,-all of which will be made more a parent as this description proceeds, especially` when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein l Figure -1 is a fragmentary sectional view taken substantially-on the plane indicated by line 1--1 in Figure 3;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on the plane indicated by line 2-2 in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view through an internal combustion engine emom the pump direct-v bedying a cooling system in accordance with this invention; and
Figure 4 isla fragmentary horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the plane indicated by line 4 4 in Figure 3. l
Referring new particularly to the Vdrawings wherein like characters indicate like parts, it
-will be noted that there is illustrated an internal combustion engine 10 including a plurality of cylinders 11. The reference character 12 indicates generally the cylinderhead 1n which is mounted the usual spark plugs 13, the reference character 14 indicating the usual valves for controlling the intake andY exhaust from the combustion chamber 15 ofthe cylinders. i
Mounted upon the head of the engine is a.
pump 16 for pumping or circulating the cooling water used in cooling the engine, thls pump being illustrated as driven from the fan-shaft 17 of the fan 18. O
`That art of the circulatory stem assoc1- ated wit the engine is connecte to the lower opening of the radiator (not shown) by means of a ponduit 19, the water iowing from this conduit into a chamber 2O and thence 1ut o the intake side of the pump 16. The water 1s delivered by the pump into a longitudinally extending compartment or passageway 21 formed in the head 12 of the motor, this pas; sageway 21 constituting a water inlet mamfold. As seen from Figure 3 the inlet manifor inspection purposes. Y
The water entering the cylinder'jackets through the openings 23 is deflected by the baille 25 toward the valve side of the engine where it rises around the valve in the customary manner and up thel headproper.
at portion of thecylinder jackthis portionI ofthe cylinder h.
` apparen chamber 28 to whi is connected a substantially tubular member 29 constituting a water outlet and thermostat cover. Mounted within the member 29 is a thermostat 30 adapted to coizroli double valvel31 profvided witliv a ri era arranged va ve sur ace 32 an a gdbstanp tially centrally arranged valve surface 33. e valve surface r3 is adapted to seat on the valve seat 34 formed on the lower end of the element 29, and when`thus seated to intercept the p of the water throu h the outlet element 2 9 which is connected to t e upper end of the radiator (not shown). In its other position the valve is adapted to seat on the valve seat 35 of a by-pass opening 36 of a byassageway or chamber 37 communicating with the chamber 20 and consequently with the pump 16. Hence, the thermostat under certain conditions, that is when the water is hot, seats the valve 31 upon the seat of the b -pass openi 35 and permits the waterto ow through t e outlet member 29th the radiator. Under other conditions the by-pass is opened andthe water is conducted directlyl back A to the 'pump without flowing throng the radiator. It will be noted that as the water is discharged from the pump it is conducted directly'into the water inlet manifoldv 21 which constitutes the wall of thecombustion chamber most remote from the spark plugs 13. Thus, this portion of the wall of the combustion chamber is maintained at a lower temperature than would otherwise result with the resulting advantage that detonation is present to a smaller extent. Inasmuch as the cooling water is first caused to 'ass through and to contact with the adjacent portion of the wall of the combustion chamber and is subsequently conducted to the c linder' jackets, the jacket temperature will Arelatively higher than with the conventional types of systems because 0f the heat absorbed by the water during its contact with the aforesaid portion of the cylinder head. This system of cooling and the resulting relative wall temperatures obtains certain advantages in motor operation by effecting the etiiciency of the combustion.
While the invention' has sheen described herein somewhat in detail and Ywith particu- Y lar reference to a definite arrangement and' lamociation of parts, nevertheless it; will be tQVto skilled in this art that the principles of this invention are capable of expresion other types of apparatus so that rarvation is made to make such changes and ent of parts as may come within the purview of the accompanying claims.
