Description

S. WALES. CLASP.
No. 179,142. Patented June 27,1876.
,INVENTORg UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIGOURNEY WALES, OF NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO NATHL. H. FURNESS, OF TARRYTOWN, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLASPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179, 142, dated June 27, 1876; application filed October 7, 1874.
To all whom it may. concern:
Be it known that I, SIGOURNEY WALES, of New York city, county, and State, have in- Vented certain Improvements in Suspenders and Clothing-Supporters, of which the following is a specification This invention has for its object the connecting of a ring or loop to the end of a strap, or to the edge of wide material, by means of a clamp, which is hereinafter particularly described, and set forth in the accompanying drawings.
A clampingplate is provided with a slot, out in the metal lengthwise at that portion which is to be folded. Through this slot a T- shaped cross-bar upon the ring or loop is entered, andturned at right angles to the slot, the clamping-plate then bent around it and secured in place. The clamping-plate is provided on one side with points by cutting them at'proper distances, and bending them at an angle with said clamping-plate. These points pierce the material and pass through certain openings made in the other side of the clamping-plate, arranged to permit them to pass and be bent down upon the .plate, which is provided with a rib raised thereon, and having openings into which the sharp ends of the points enter, and are thus concealed. This may also be accomplished by depressing a portion of the clamping-plate between the opening through which the points come and those provided to receive the sharp end of said points.
Figure 1 shows that portion of the clamping-plate B from which the points 0 O are cut, and having the T-shaped cross-bar G,
resting within the fold T and in the slot H, through which it enters. Fig. 2 shows the opposite side of the clamping-plate 13, provided with the openings D D, through which the points 0 0 pass after piercing the material within the clamps. These points, when bent down upon the clamping-plate, are made to enter openings suitably arranged in the rib E, whereby the sharp points are concealed and rendered secure from liability to catch any material which may be brought in contact with the clamp while in use.
It will be seen that this rib may be dispensed with, and in its place a series of depressions struck into this part of the clamping-plate, having at one end the openings D D, through which the points 0 0 come out, and at the opposite end of the depression an opening formed by breaking the material in the process of forming said depressions, which receives the sharp points of G 0 when they are fully bent down, and thus affording a protection thereto equally as efficient as the rib E.
I claim as my invention-- 1. A clamping-plate having the points 0 (J, the openings D D, the rib E, and the slot H, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
2. The clamping-plate having the points 0 G, the openings D D, the rib E, and the slot H, in combination with a ring having T-shaped arms, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
SIG-OURNEY WALES.
