In the construction illustrated A desig nates a main frame comprising a standard A and asurmounting bed A; B, a platen mountedin the'front portion of the main frame; C, a typewriting machine which is movably mounted, for line-spacing, on the rails comprising the bed A and D web-control mechanism mounted between the rearwardly extendin arms 1 of the main frame, said arms constituting continuances of the rails which comprise the bed A The frame A is of we'll-knownconstruction. The front ends of the rails are connected by a rigidly, attached cross-bar 2, which is equipped with studs or hooks 2 adapted to engage register-perforations 2" with which the paper webs 3 are provided. The webs 3 are, in the illustration given, drawn from a roll 3.
The standard A. is shown as comprisin a pair of foot-equipped uprights connected by bolts 4 equipped with spacing-sleeves.
The platen B is movable by means of spring-held actuating mechanism 5 involving a system of levers actuated through the medium of a connecting rod 6 whose lower end is joined to a pedal 7 which is pivotally mounted at 8 on a pivot carried by rigid arms 9 extending from the lower cross-rod 4.
' The mechanism 5 includes a rock-shaft 1O clampingmember 12 which. serves also as a tear-off device. The member 12is provided with-perforations 12 adapted to fit loosely over the hooks 2.
By depressing the lever 7 the mechanism 5 is actuated against the force of the spring 13 thereof to cause the lowering of the rear end of the platen B and the lifting of the clampbar12. The bed A is equipped at the rear of the platen with a rigidly secured cross-bar 14 and with adjustable rigid clamps 14". When the platen is lowered the webs 3 are unclamped or released from the clamping action.
The typewrit'ing machine C may he of any well-known construction. transverse movement in the operation of printing words, characters, etc.
The web-tensioning mechanism D comprises preferably an auxiliary frame 15 mounted between the arms 1; a slide 16 mounted on the longitudinal members of said auxiliary frame; coil springs 17 connecting the slide 16 with the frame 15 and serving normally to hold the slide in retracted position; and a chain or flexible connection '18" connected with the slide 16 and passing about a roller 19 at the front end of the frame 15, the lower end of said chain being connected with the pedal 7 and a hanger 20 in which It is capable of.

The auxiliary frame 15 is supported on cross-bars 23 and 24: which connect the arms 1 of the bed A The auxiliary frame is equipped at its front and rear ends with suitable hooks or projections adapted to engage the cross-bars mentioned. If desired, the auxiliary frame may be lifted out of the bed of the machine.
Longitudinal members of the frame 15 are connected by transversely extending webguides 25. v
The slide 16 comprises a cross-plate 16, whose ends rest on the longitudinal members of the auxiliary frame 15; vertical blocks 16 engage-the inner vertical sur faces of the longitudinal members of the frame 15; and bottom members 16 which engage the lower edges of said longitudinal members. The blocks 16 are equipped with vertical pins 26.
Upon the cross-plate or web 16 of the slide is supported a pile of friction plates which are shown as comprising a lower group 27 and an upper, longer group 27. These plates are provided near their extremities with perforations 27 which freely engage the pins 26.
The webs 3 are'threaded between the guides and then between the friction plates carried by the slide. The plates, by the action of gravity, produce a pressure upon the webs and create suficient friction to stretch the webs tight across the platen when the slide is retracted.
The rails of the frame 15 are equipped with devices 28 adapted to relieve the pressure of the plates on the webs to some extent when the slide reaches the front end of its traverse. The devices 28 are shown as comprising blocks 28 equipped with fingers 28 and 28 which are adapted to engage, respectively,
the end portions of the lower and upper groups of friction plates. .That is, when the slide nears the forward end of its traverse the plates ride upon the'inclined upper edges of the fingers, thus lifting the plates and lightening the pressure somewhat. Tf desired, the friction plates may be of graduated length and as many lifting fingers as desired may be employed. As shown, however, the fingers 28 serve to raise the upper group of plates, and fingers 28 serve to raise the lower group, thus relieving the friction sufliciently to permit the operator to draw the paper webs forwardly when a fresh form is to be brought into position over the platen.
The paper webs 3 are shown interleaved with transverse carbon strips 29 (Fig. 2) which are derived from a suitable source (not shown).
After a form has been printed, or filled in,
woman the operator depresses the pedal 7, and thus efl'ects relative movement between the platen B and the associated clamping devices, leaving the paper webs free to be lifted from the hooks 2 and drawn forwardly until the next set of register perforations can be brought into engagement with the books 2. In the operation of unclamping the webs, as noted, the pedal 7 through the medium of the chain 18 draws the slide 16 forwardly, and causes the friction plates to ride onto the platelifters 28. This frees the paper webs from some of the pressure of; theplates, and makes it easier for the operator to draw the paper webs forwardly.
When the operator relieves the pressure on the peda1,the springs 17 operate to retract the slide 16. In the return movement of the slide, the friction plates. exert an ironing placed over the second strip, and so on throughout the series.
The foregoing detailed description ,has been. given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art.
What T regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. in means of the character set forth: a frame equipped with a movable platen, said frame having arms extending rearwardly from the platen; an actuator serving to actuate said platen; an auxiliary frame supported between said arms; and web-tensioning means comprising a slide mounted in said auxiliary frame, and a friction plate device mounted on said slide adapted to exert retractive force on the webs in the return movement of said slide.
2. A machine'as specified in claim 1, having a yielding device normally holding said slide in retracted position and having a'connection between said actuator and slide to actuate the latter when said actuator is operated to unclamp the webs.

and havingarms extending rearwardly from the platen; an actuator serving to produce relative movement between said platen and web-clamping means to effect unclamping of the webs; and web-'tensioning means comprising a spring-retracted slide mounted between the planes of said arms, and a friction plate,
device mounted on said slide adapted to exert retractive force on the Webs in the return movement of said slide.
8. A machine as specified in claim 7 having connecting means between said actuator and said slide, whereby said slide will be moved forwardly when said actuator is moved to unclamp the webs.
9. A machine as specified in claim 7, in which said slide is mounted on an auxiliary frame demountably supported between said arms and capable of being lifted vertically from its normal position.
10. A machine as specified in claim 7, in which the slide is mounted on an auxiliary frame removably supported between said arms and in. which said auxiliary frame isequipped in advance of the slide with camdevices adapted to relieve the pressure of the friction plate device when the slide is at the forward end of its traverse.
