Description
W. N. HUTCHINSON.
CAR-COUPLING. No. 179.116. Patented June 27,1876.
WARREN N. HUTGHINSON, OF SOUTH BAY CITY, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179.1 16, dated June 27, 1876 application filed November 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WARREN N. Huron- INsON, of South Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in (Jar-Couplings, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in car-couplings, having for its object to so construct the draw-head as to automatically engage an entering link when presented edgewise to the jawthat is to say,
turned axially a quarter-turn-and to hold the link in position for coupling with another draw-head.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the draw-head and the combination therewith of an internal buffer-spring, a leaf-spring for keeping the link behind ahook in the jaw, and an uncoupling device, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a cross-section at a; 01:. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the draw-head, showing ,the linkhook and its butter-spring. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the other half of the draw head, showing the link-spring and its yoke.
In the drawing, A representsa draw-head, havingalongitudinal vertical division through the center. One halt'has a cavity formed behind the bellnlouth to receive a rubber butfer-sprin g, B, having its central portion cored out to increase the elasticity. In front of this buffer there is a lateral hook, a, cast on the through a slot in the draw-head.
side of the jaw, with which hook the link 0 engages. Dis a leaf-spring, secured at its rear end to a recess in the other half of the draw-head. Its head I) or outer end is beveled to deflect the end of the link inward. The link pushes it aside until past the hook at,
when the spring will throw it behind said hook.
The buffer-spring yields to the entering link, and then, pressing it against the hook, keeps it in any position in which it may be adjusted.
To uncouple, the spring D is provided with a yoke, 0, through which the link passes. A short lever, E, is pivoted to the outside of the draw-head, and is connected, by astaple, d, with the spring D, the said staple passing By pulling on the lever the spring D Will be retracted, and by the yoke 0 the link will be drawn from behind the lever, and then be pushed out by the buffer-spring. The shank of the drawbar may be solid, and only the outer part be divided, if preferred.
Y'Vhat I claim as my invention is- I The draw-bar A a, constructed as described, the combinationtherewith ot' the buffer-sprin g B, leaf-spring G, yoke c, lever D, and staple d, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
WARREN N. HUTOHINSON.
