Our invention relates to a steam boiler, in which provision is made for preventing or minimizing the accumulation of slag upon the water tubes, and is particularly applicable to a steam boiler of the Stirling type, in which upper steam and water drums are connected to a lower mud drum by banks of water tubes with baflles interposed to direct Fig. 2 is a section on an enlarged scale along the line 22 of Fig. 1. In the drawings, reference characters 4, 5 and 6 indicate steam and water drums that are connected by banks of tubes 7, 8 and 9 to a mud drum 10. in the manner similar to the well-known Stirling boiler, and baflles 11, 12, 13 and 14 are shown for directing the hot gases along and across the tubes and into the outlet 15. The usual superheater is shown at 16, the connections thereto being omitted and soot blowers may be located at desirable places, one of the same being indicated at 17.
4 Our invention is particularly useful with a furnace having firing mechanism of'the.
type which causes slag particles to rise with the hot gases that contact with the water tubes. In operation, the hot gases from the fuel rise and carry along particles of slagforming material which passes upwardly and into contact with the tubes. Heretofore, serious diflieulties have arisen because of the accumulation of the slag on the front tubes of the front bank of the boiler, and particularly on the portions of the tubes above the bafile 11 where the gases pass. The accumulation of slag, particularly above the baffle 11, has heretofore sometimes bridged across adjacent tubes, thereby choking the passage or Serial No. 69,970.
cutting it off altogether and requiring the shutting down of the boiler until the slag could be removed. In accordance with our invention, the front tubes of the front bank 9 of tubes are so arranged that difficulties due to the accumulation of slag thereon are obviated. In order to do this, the front-rows of tubes of the bank 9 are preferably spaced farther apart than the other rows in this bank, and the tubes in the front rows are also spaced farther from each other than the tubes in the other rows. Preferably in accordance with our invention, the two front rows of tubes are so modified by the wider spacing, and the remaining tubes of the bank of tubes are installed in the usual manner. In the embodiment of our invention shown on the drawings, the baflle 11 is installed behind three rows of tubes, the row 9 being one of the usual rows and the rows 9 and 9 being rows of tubes installed in accordance with our invention. The row 9 is installed substantially the same distance from the next succeeding row as the distance between succeeding rows, but the tubes of the row 9 are installed in staggered relation to the tubes in the row 9" and the rows 9 and 9 are preferably farther apart than the other-rows of the bank of tubes. 2. In combination, a water tube boiler having an upper transverse steam and water drum connected to a lower mud drum by a bank of tubes arranged in rows, the first and second rows of tubes being spaced from each other farther than the spacing between the other rows of tubes in said bank, and the tubes in each of said two front rows being spaced apart farther than the tubes inthe other rows of tubes in said bank.
In combination, a water tube boiler having an upper transverse steam and water drum connected to a lower mud drum by a bank of tubes arranged in rows, the tubes in the first and second rows of tubes of said bank being staggered with respect to eachother and spaced farther apart than thetubes of other rows, said front rows of tubes entering each of said drums along a longitudinal row of holes. In combination, a water tube boiler having an upper transverse steam and water drum connected to a lower mud drum by a bank of tubes arranged in rows, a battle between certain of said rows oftubes, and rows of tubes in front of said bafile spaced farther apart than the rear rows and entering each of said drums along a single row of holes.
5. In combination, a Water tube boiler having an upper transverse steam and water drum connected to a lowermud drum by a bank of tubes arranged in rows, the two front rows of tubes being spaced from each other farther than the spacing between the other rows of tubes in said bank, said two front rows of tubes entering said drums along single rows of holes.
- 6, In combination, a water tube boiler having an upper transverse steam and water drum connected to a lower mud drum by a bank of tubes arranged in rows, each tube in a front row of tubes being located in front of a series'of tubes in successive rows, and each tube of the next to the front row being located in front of a different series of tubes in successive rows, tubes of the two front rows being straight for most of their length, and entering each of said drums along a single line.
7 In a boiler, a bank of tubes arranged in rows, the main portion of the tubes in the two front rows of said bank being spaced farther apart than the tubes in the other rows,

In a Water tube boiler ofothe type that comprises drums arranged at the ends of the water tubes, the combination of a combustion chamber, and a tube bank that serves as the rear wall of said combustion chamber, said bank being made up of transverse rows of closely spaced tubes and a plurality of front groups of widely spaced tubes, the end portions of the tubes constituting said front groups being in transverse alignment with each other at the points where they are connected to the drums.
9. In a water tube boiler of the type that comprises drums arranged at the ends of the water tubes, the combination of a combustion chamber, and'a tube bank that serves as the rear wall of said combustion chamber,
the tubes at the front side of said bank being disposed so as to form a plurality of groups of staggered tubes whose end portions are in transverse alignment with each other and whose intermediate portions are spaced farther apart than the remaining transverse rows of tubes of the bank.
10. In a water tube boiler, the combination of an upper drum and a lower drum, a combustion chamber, and a bank of upright water tubes connected to said drums that forms the rear wall of said combustion chamber, said bank including front tubes which are disposed so that the end portions of same are in transverse alignment with each other but their intermediate portions are arranged in staggered relation and spaced with relatively wide spaces between same.
11. In a boiler having a furnace, a bank of tubes arranged in rows, and a plurality of rows of slag screen tubes between said bank and said furnace, with the planes of the center lines of the rows of slag screen tubes, for at least a portion of the length of the tubes,.
spaced farther apart than the planes ofcenter lines of the rows in said bank, and all of the adjacent ends of the slag screen tubes located in single rows.
12. In a boiler having a furnace, a bank of tubes arranged in rows, and a plurality of rows of slag screen tubes between said bank and said furnace, with the tubes in the rows of slag screen tubes staggered with respect to each other and all of the adjacent ends of the slag screen tubes located in single rows.
